Wow, my cuz has 2 of those. He paid $13,500 for each of them with the stainless top. I've always been jealous. You stole that for $6500. I'm happy to tell you that the bottom right drawer can hold 490 lbs of spare bolts and nuts, and filled to that capacity, you can still open it with only one finger. Those roller bearings are completely un-affected by a quarter-ton of weight. That is the best toolbox I've ever worked out of, and probably the best one I ever will. Great job bud! Amazing find!
Congratulations on the new tool box Eric. I really appreciate how you have worked out of that old box for so long and have such a connection with it. You can certainly tell just looking at it brings back so many memories to you. I'm sure you cannot wait to make many new memories with with new Snap-On Box.
That box would look just right sat in my shop!! Always love them. Every time I open the catalogue and see those monster boxes with all the tools in them I dream of one day......!
I sold my used WRX to buy a used MACSIMIZER 1900 Superstation with Hutch and stainless top for $3750. Only took me 30 adult years to make the jump. ...one day.....!
I'll never know why I'm so excited to see another guy's toolbox. Maybe envy? Maybe living vicariously through someone else? Who knows, nonetheless, it is a sexy looking beast of a box.......congrats Eric!!
I think its kind of like sitting in someones Ferrari (or similar car), just makes you feel good seeing the fancy things that people have. Plus come on, all guys love looking at other guys tool boxes.
You're right! I didn't realize, but I'm totally enjoying living vicariously as he enjoys his tool box, while I'm still buying more tools for two tool boxes, which are already too small. LOL
You don't have to justify it Eric. Its something you needed and wanted. Besides after all the free help you have given viewers and the People on fixing it forward, I say You've earned it.
Congrats on the new "baby"! You justified yourself well about the decision of your purchase. A DIYer or weekend warrior may buy a Snap-on box because he wants to. A 40+/hour a week automotive technician buys a Snap-on box because he needs to. Our needs are always more important than our wants.
Have you checked the serial number with Snap On to see if they may have a lien from the original purchaser who never paid the entire balance off after purchase from Snap On. Some people buy them from Snap On and don't pay them off and sell them on Craigslist and Snap On still actually owns them. Google - "Snap On toolbox returned to dealer for price paid on Craigslist"
I wouldnt let the snap-on guy check my serial number if I bought it on Craigslist I would tell him to fuck off lol cause honestly its not my problem if snap-on got beat out of money they will have to go after the original owner for their money
Sadly it doesn't work that way! Same with a Pawn Shop, if they find something is stolen they have to give it up! They are out that money! In fact, I have seen what happens when a guy sells a box that is not completely paid off and the Tool company found it. The guy who bought it pitched a bitch about them trying to repo it, cops showed up and said if not surrendered he could be charged with buying stolen property! It happens, it sucks and if it had been me, the guy I bought it from would have a major ass kicking coming his way!
Eric, you deserve a new toolbox like this new one you now have. No harm in that man. Now when I watch your vids from now on I will be expecting more smiles. Kidding lol but I know you're happy and that is all that matters.
Congrats Eric! you're absolutely right, that's a big investment, but you're also right about Snap On boxes holding their value. You said it right when you said it'll outlast you, I'm hoping my Epiq does as well
In my humble opinion, the quality of someone's workmanship is often reflected by the quality of their tools. Eric I am really happy you were able to invest a quality piece of equipment for an affordable price. Like you said it will probably last you the rest of your automotive career and hopefully it will bring improved efficiency in your shop
I love that comment! I gotta tell ya, I've lost my warm shinies over practical things a bit over time, I think I'm a bit jaded by buying tools all the time, lol.
I think its awesome you're handing down your old box to your kids. I told my dad the only thing I wanted from him when that time came was his snap on box. yes its from the 70s, but that was his first box when he became a technician, and that is what I learned what I know out of. kudos my friend!!!! much congratulations sir!!!
You know a real dyed-in-the-wool mechanic when his toolbox (without the tools) cost him more than his daily driver, AND he gets more excited about it. Totally awesome, Eric. Congrats!!!
Congratulations on the new box, you did get a great deal on it. After being in the industry as long as you have, you more than deserve a nice box to look at and give you that warm fuzzy feeling. It's a "look what I have accomplished" kind of thing.
6500? For a new Snappy that size? Wow. My 1350 Mac was 5800 and it was a truck demo with a little dent. For swapping wheels, use your lift, done it, just have to move your Fairmont (which looks pretty close to being fun). I also Wax my box and it has a cover, it is an investment, and has some money inside it. BTW, Id buy the box from you for 7k in a heart beat
I do not think it is. I have seen deals like this before. Maybe the guy bought it, something happened and needed money ASAP. However Eric, if you read this, you might research it before the Law shows up and takes your box. Craigslist has been known for some shady things.
yeah, I was going to suggest the lift to swap the casters around too.... and I agree the for $12-13k they should all be locking swivel so you can pick and choose which swivel and when. (don't know if they make those yet but for that price they should)
Congrats on the new Snap-On tool chest. I purchased a new box at a discount while I was a student in tech school, and even though I am no longer professionally employed as an auto service tech, I love working with it, and have great presence in my garage. I'm excited for you, keep up the great work on paying it forward and making great videos.
You are just like a kid on Christmas Day............showing all the draws and stuff. The fact you are justifying the price shows me that you understand the value of money, hard work and achievement. You deserve it and a whole bunch of new tools to go into it. Well done buddy!
really hope you called a rep and made sure it wasn't owed on before you bought it, don't want to be watching a video of eric gets his new box repossessed for not doing the leg work before buying a to good to be real deal
I recently purchased the same thing, (albeit a year ago) but mine is a 95th Anniversary edition, black, with red anodized trim, and added a locker, and hutch. I love it. You will love yours too. Sorry everyone, you simply cannot beat Snap-on quality. With trading in my old Snap On box, I only had to finance $4,400.
Congrats, Eric on the new box. I just bought a brand new Snap On KRL722 box back in January, it is similar except that it does'nt have the bank of drawers on the right end. It's easy to swap the wheels around, i did that myself. I used my hoist to pick the box up off the ground just high enough to be able to switch the wheels around. That lid/plate in the one drawer, is exactly what you said that you think it is, a writing surface. The problem with it is, it is a little too low, unless you're sitting in a creeper seat. I have my locker end cab on the left end, and a top chest on the top at the left end. It is true about how the drawers are, once you fill them with tools, they roll better. That cardboard in the bottom drawer, it is a one time use ramp. I threw mine away without using it, since i really did'nt need it. Got it with some deep discounts and a good tradein value. My box sells for $6480 new, it got it for less than half that. Also, mine is black, too. I wanted red to match my other boxes, but they did'nt have it in the area at the time.
I love all the guys who dont wrench for a living complaining about the cost of a toolbox. Work in a real shop every day and your mind will change. Honestly I cant even say an auto shop... I work heavy diesel. Ive tried Crapsman toolboxes. The drawers literally collapse under the weight of the tools. Harbor Freight.. Sure theyre cheap and built well but very small boxes. I need a box at least 24" deep or I will be struggling to fit all my tools without separating things like sockets and wrenches. In a shop the more work you do the more efficient you are and in most the more money you make. If youre struggling with struck drawers or digging tools out from under tools, you lose.
It's my birthday and you posted an ETCG1 video! Love your channel Eric, it's always fascinating watching you work on your amazing car collection. I hope you keep your channels going forever. Cheers.
Jimny it's obvious you've never worked in a dealer settting where guys will try to pry your box open on a day off to snatch a tool and do their job faster. Most large dealerships are upwards of 25 techs hungry for work...the box it as much a bank vault as it is tool storage
Very nice! I bought a Craftsman toolbox last year. Now I do not have tools all over the place. I would forget where I put them or forget that I had them and buy more of the same tool. Having them all organized into drawers makes such a difference!
congrats bro...ain't gotta justify nothing to me....you (we) deserve it!! That BOX is the CADILLAC of tool storage and are built like a tank!! I have the KRL1003 with 2 full size side lockers.
I worked out of a Craftsman box for 17 years as a Collision Tech and bought all my good tools first. Do yourself a favor and take out the bottom drawers and spray a little rustproof er in the lower seams if you have a humid enviornment in your shop. CONGRATS ERIC!!
The price on that thing (new) is absurd. There's nowhere near enough material init, not nearly as good a craftsmanship (if there was any, since these days assembly line) to justify the price they ask for it. For 12k i could buy all those materials, have them bent and just assemble it myself twice (here in Europe). That being said, the valid point raised by others is correct, the whole deal sounds iffy. Don't get me wrong, if you get away with that, i'm happy that you're happy, and wish you a long time, your life time, with this box lasting. I just find the price out of this world.
*ERIC* Go to the channel name 'John Grimsmo' and check the video called 'Kaizen foam at Grimsmo Knives'. That foam is a perfect solution for your drawers to be neat and organized. And it's cheap. Very cheap.
Awsome box Eric! i honestly can't beleive you waited this long to upgrade your box. You had the other for almost 30 years and it wasn't even new when you got it lol. You deserve it, very happy for you. Have fun filling it up! It will be nice to look at in your videos.
Or put up a photo of the numbers so the snap on dealer that is still owed money against the box knows where he can repossess it from. I think the old adage of "if it is too good to be true" may apply here.
Im sure Eric ran the numbers on that box. There was another youtuber who bought a used snap on box at a screaming deal and it turned out that wasn't fully paid for by the origional owner. Snap-on Paid the youtuber back what he paid for the box in full, and tacked the amount to what was owed by the person who was legally on the hook to pay in the first place. I can't find the video right now but the youtuber was driving a truck when he explained the what happened. Chris
I remember when I got mine I was that happy, I even get happy and excited when I see someone else got new box lol. people say big nice box doesn't make good techs but it definitely shows they take pride on what they do. you deserve a nice box looong time ago I'm glad you finally got one Eric.
A friend of mine has that same box, those casters are cool. You can lock the other side and pull the pin out to make the other caster move, at least this is what's on his. Great box, enjoy it!
That's a beautiful box Eric. I know a lot of people scoff at premium quality tools and storage options, and I used to be one of them lol. I started out with Canadian Tire's Mastercraft Maximum line of tools and a Sears Craftsman Professional 23-drawer box (10-drawer top, 13-drawer bottom) and it all has served me quite well from the day I started out as a lube technician to last year when I landed my "forever" gig at a small bit good independent shop. I still have many of my original tools and they do the job, but after using my boss' Snap-On tools over the past year, I'm a new firm believer in "Buy quality and buy once". People might think we are crazy for buying expensive tools and a quality box like that, but once you reach a certain point in your trade and accumulate so many tools, a top-quality box that can hold it all and stands the test of time while giving you lots of room for storage and organization will help you as a technician. You've definitely earned it my friend. Cheers.
ACES, Eric! We all know that, especially with parts and tools, we usually get what we pay for. Snap On is recognized (at least in the US) as a leading manufacturer of quality tools and equipment. You KNOW that their stuff is built to last. And to get it for almost half price - WIN! Please feel free to be justifiably proud of your "new toy"! CONGRATULATIONS!
Congratulations Eric! I love your enthusiasm for this outstanding toolbox. Having fine tools makes you happy every time you use them. So "quality is remembered long after the price has been forgotten". ;) I am looking forward to the video showing how you stack your tools in it, what philosophy you have to organize it the way you do etc. Thanks for the video!
you deserve that box. And i have learned that being organized sure helps sanity. I am hoping to do a tool box tour soon and will be giving you a shout out
Awesome box, I remember getting my 40" KRA top and bottom new from the truck. I thought I had died and gone to heaven! Best of luck with it and I hope we can expect a toolbox tour of it when it's all sorted!
Congrats on the new box Eric. The 1023 has long been my favorite box. $6500 is about on par for a USED 1023 here in my neck of the woods. $6500 for a NEW one is outstanding imo. Congrats sir. I hope it serves you well (it will!).
Love it dude. I've been watching since before the drama with your old landlord. Even in that amount of time you have more than earned this box, and the shop you're in now. Looking forward to a tour of the new box once it's set up.
Freaking AWESOME Eric, Love that toolbox. I am happy for you. I know that feeling. I just upgraded 3 smaller craftsman boxes ( one was mine and two I got when my dad passed on) to two large Harbor freight units and man am I glad I did. Once you get everything moved to the new box and setup the way you want you'll wonder how in the world you ever got by without it.
I made a similar decision as you four years ago, but on a smaller scale. I bought a new black KRL722 on craigslist from a mechanic that had won it in a Snap-On district raffle, but didn't need it. He delivered it for a little over two grand. Not being a professional, I would have never bought it for my basement except that it was a good deal. The Snap-On list price on my tool box has increased $800 since I bought it! These type of tool boxes will last your entire life unless it becomes to small for your needs. I don't regret this purchase because it is so nice to use, and if I ever sell the box I expect to get as much as I paid (it is still like new).
I have the same box, In green!! LOVE the thing! like you say everything i open the shop doors I smile. I dreamed about the box I now own. I will never need another box. I will pass it down to my kids. One day it will be filled, but for now I'm happy with a few empty draws.
Congrats eric. That's a well deserved update/upgrade. I purchased an electric orange 55" snappy box recently brand new off the truck for $2400... It gets cleaned and spray waxed 1-2x a week. It'll outlast you man. Take care!
You know I was just wondering why you had a photo of yourself, but you answered that! Thank you. It's like you read my mind :) Now that's what I call good customer service!
Nice box sir!!😀 That little dent and scratch don't add up to 6,000 $ so you got a heck of a deal, and you deserve it!!😀 you've helped ALOT of folks and that in itself is worth the reward !!! Enjoy, I know I sure as heck would be super proud if I had a box like that!!😁
Good on you Eric! You most certainly deserve to reward/treat yourself to this new cabinet. Don't let those with class envy or the inability to save $ beat you down. *Side note - that pull out drawer cover is a good spot for laminating charts for quick reference.
awesome box . I bought myself a brand new snap on box about 3 years ago and absolutely love it . probably the only box I will ever buy . hope you enjoy that new box .
a tool box is an extension of your self just like a car guy and his car. I'm always excited to show my friends my tool box. like you said, it's like a status thing. life is short so live it at the fullest and have things that make you who you are. I'm happy for you
that is an amazing deal you got there. people who know snap on price and real quality will know that you got a great deal and it was definitely worth the money. can't believe someone was selling that for so little. great price for an amazing box
Snap On doesn't deserve the money they charge for this box new. And most mechanics don't deserve a Snap On box. But in this case, you paid 50% of what Snap On asks (which I think is fair) and you're one of the few mechanics that deserves a Snap On box. Good job Eric!
Very nice choice! I bought a KRL series over a year ago, it was old and rode hard, put away wet. I came across a great deal and a brand new Matco 6S. Nothing beats a brand new box. 👍🏻
Probably the majority of mechanics would love to have a big SnapOn box if they could afford it. I used to work on Jet engines and we had anywhere from 50 to 100 mechanics that had to store their boxes next to each other's boxes. Some guys would get a brand new SnapOn box, about half the size of yours, and eventually it would get a ding in it when they weren't around to see who did it. Then they would get mad and take it home, and bring back a cheaper box. At least you have a safe place to keep your box, away from a bunch of people that can't drive a box any better than they can drive a car. Congratulations on the box.
congratulations. you worked hard and hard work deserves to be rewarded, being efficient as a technician is what it's about and if this new box helps i say more power to ya. great vids and as always thanks for all the help.
Yep ,you got a decent deal. For everyones info ,snap on is not the only premium usa made tool box. SK makes a few different ,smaller boxes that are made with high grade aluminum. They are smaller but can be bolted together.
Congrats on the new box. A good box would last a tech's entire career. My lead tech bought his SO box during school, and he is still using it today! Standing strong after 35 years in the trade. Everyday when you first unlock the lock and open a drawer, you body would feel electrified. If not careful you would even giggle a bit. That's how I feel when I touch my SO box everyday @ work.
You got a DEAL... It's not expensive compared to the Waterloo I suggested to you. It probably around the same price to get to what you have.... maybe a bit more. Well done Eric! Enjoy it... fill er up! NEATLY.
After 20 years I also pulled the trigger on a similar box (double bank, CL deal). There is no need to justify it at all. You hit a certain point in life when you need to just say screw it, time to treat myself to a nice tool box. I looked at it as it is the last toolbox I will probably be buying, and the dealer that comes to my shop happily will warranty anything that goes wrong with it. Only suggestion I have is to hunt down a set of drawer protectors. Be amazed at how often you ding the top edges of the drawers with tools.
I have a KRL1033, stainless top, and I just picked up a hutch for it a little while ago. I absolutely love it. It is basically the same but it has two full length top two drawers. Super heavy duty. Just about everyone at my shop has snap on boxes. Some of them are 30 years old plus. They know how to build something that will last.
You can lift the box with your two post lift and swap the wheels, the bolt patterns are the same at both ends, it'll take 10minutes. Great box! I remember buying my first NEW Snap-On box in '81, LOL I thought it cost a fortune then. Still have it and love it.
Hey, you work hard, you deserve it, gota treat yourself!!!!! To add on, my fathers has a Snapon that he bought WELL USED when I was a kid, I'm now 27 and he still has this box and it still works great! Congratulations on the buy, thats a freaking steal! #besafeandstaydirty
It was only when you supported all your weight on the fully open drawer did the MASSIVE price make sense. Good on you Eric, All your long time subscribers will know you deserve it.
good luck with the box. It is a nice one. Everyone on here has bought something nicer than just what you "need", either extra option on your car or truck or better tool than what you actually need. Enjoy
Looks like the toolbox my brother bought a few years back. Very well built, and he had what I'd call a hood for it. Just a large cabinet on the top, fold up door. Kinda of peg board on the back wall and LED lighting on top. Top of the tool box made a great work bench, for smaller jobs, When the oilfield crashed he sold it for pennies on the dollar. I was in the same boat, couldn't afford to buy it myself.
I work out of one of these boxes doing Air Craft Maintenance. They are good quality, don't let the haters get you down man. We beat the crap out of our boxes, and they hold up great. The lock tumbler is the only thing that is kind of marginal, but they are cheap to replace.
If it makes you happy then I say go with it! Not to mention you're a very hard worker and you deserve it in my opinion. . . . . . . . . .So be happy with it! I'd LOVE to have one one of these days.
I had to buy is stages. 6K for the bottom,4K for the top box,6 years later. That is a KILLER deal,Eric. I figured 15 K. The trade in value never goes down.
You got a great deal on a fantastic box! You definitely deserve it. No one really pays retail for a tool truck box. There's a huge margin the dealer can play with.
I doubt the box is stolen, Eric being the person he is would've confirmed that. Sometimes you really just find a diamond in the rough. Real happy for ya Eric, good luck with it and we'll stay tuned for the next box tour video!
You got a great deal and deserve to have a Snap-On tool box. On the other hand, what I don't have hanging on my workbench or in one of those plastic box tool sets, is in a coffee can. That's about right for the work I do around the homestead and my 27 year old Jeep YJ.
