Many you tubers say post production is the biggest stresser. However a huge amount of followers consider our channel choices to be a sort of friendship choice that we make every time a video appears. We're here (some of us) for the person as much or more than the content.
I watch Eric O at South Main Auto and I don't how he's done it for so long. Running an actual profitable auto shop that's booked solid for a month in advance with customers' cars and still finding time to make and then produce videos, just seems like an insane amount of work.
I agree (for myself anyway), though that fact alone doesn't really alleviate the need for editing. I don't know about Eric but, for me doing editing takes around 30 hours, and it's not even that good quality. Having a camera person and proper equipment can cut that down a lot (less wasted footage, vastly fewer adjustments to audio levels). But the compromise seems to be either don't bother filming something that might be more useful or entertaining (less detail), or spend a few more hours watching footage to pre-plan the content, and pick the best footage (and subsequently more time trimming).
Rhage73 here, thanks for the update. I don't have a lift be 50 soon, been wrenching a long time. Mostly to keep my PoS's on the road. I learned a lot from your channel. I wanted to pay it forward. A year and 1/2 ago i finally acquired a garage to hold my tools and do work in. Slipped disk and a layoff later. It is tough man. I really respect the massive amount of content you put out over the years. Filming with no lift makes a 2 hour job an 8 or 9 hour job and coming upto speed on editing and such could make it a several day job. Being injured makes a 2 hour job an 8 hour job then the filming and editing, i was like lord have mercy. how in the world. I respect the hell out of you dude, thank you again for sharing so many amazing how too videos. You will always be top shelf in my book sir. Do you, the older we get, the slower we go, and the more we have to summon will power to put it in gear at all, the aches and pains are a new fun filled and action packed challenge. Love you bud, and do you. i will watch if i can find the vids. it is a shame that our entire existence is simply being a slave to the machine until we cant, and then we fade into the background. used to call it passing the torch, i just don't see anyone picking it up nowa days.
Putting out video content & editing takes a lot of time. When & if u do get help with shooting & editing videos, u may fine u won't be burnout as much. Two great places u've hooked up with on car repairs to collaborate with in video. Love watching u where ever u r Eric. U r such a great & valuable teacher. I'm able to do basic maintenance at 65 yrs young in my 05 Honda Element because of U & A1 Auto, Sue. 👍🏽😝 Thank you! 🤗
I can't believe it's been a year and a half already! Good luck with whatever direction the channel goes,Eric! I'm sure most of us will still be here. 🙂
Eric, do what you feel is best for you! Life is no longer what it was. Survival and state of mind is the top goal. I still will always be a fan of yours whatever you decide. You have helped so many, but now you have to take care of Eric!! My prayers and sincerest wishes go out to you. Stay well, in all respects 🙏
Too bad, I really enjoyed your videos, but I fully understand the issues with getting real estate in these days. I hope you get your passion back. Thank you for your videos.
Hi Eric I start doing mechanical in 2014 I had a Honda accord at that time. So I did watch and followed your channel a lot. I got lost on the fairmont project (I watched some of the videos but it wasn't really my thing tough) but what I want to say is THANK YOU! Today I am a mechanic and lot of my knowledge comes from your content along with other YT channels. So don't give up with the content because there's a lot of future mechanic that will be encouraged by your videos like it happened with me.
I've been watching you for years now. You are the most "real" youtuber I've seen.. especially when I see how long you've been going at this. Seriously amazed at how many times you've been screwed out of your shop... love the enthusiasm to keep moving forward. Keep it up!!! I still need help with my "pos" cars!!!! Thank you sir!!!!!
I'm so glad to see you back on RU-vid Eric. It's really a relief seeing that you are not going away and enjoyable to see you making content again. Back when I started in the field there were only a few RU-vidrs out there for auto repair help and you were one of the few on top of that list and so I've learned a lot from you in my earlier years. I do work on a lot of Hondas from time to time and so that helped knowing that your specialty is working on Hondas. I really appreciate all of the knowledge and expertise you have put in all of these years. I really hope you do find something along the way either be your own shop or something else that works for you. Wishing you all of the best in your future prospects. May God bless you sir.
Yes more ETCG back to the beginning working in your garage with no lifts. Many of us 50+ people do the same. The older we get the harder it is to get up off the floor.
I've been watching you since you came out years back. You FINALLY made a video on my birthday. 😂 The videos late but the 7th was mine. Awesome. Your quirky opens played into my favor for once. 😂
I happy that you're doing great. I was worried about you when you when OTG from RU-vid. I'm glad you found a new crew to work with, and I will watch those other videos. I consider you the OG of RU-vid Automotive repair and watched your first videos religiously as I integrated myself into the Automotive industry. I just started an Automotive repair/mentor channel and use your videos constantly for inspiration. Good Luck with as you pivot your career and I hope you find a good deal on a shop; you deserve it.
@ETCG1 I'm not sure I can explain it so that it's easily understood, but I'll try... I'm not a mechanic, nor can I do my own car work, so when I do watch the main channel videos, it's for general info. Over here, the subjects are very varied. Everything from the future of internal combustion engines, to the issues of having a decent workspace, to the troubles faced by people in the trades, and all sorts of stuff. Also, you've built a pretty good community here in the comment section. I watch a lot of YTers in the makers' community for specifics and inspiration. Others, like @AvE, @Old Sneelock's Workshop, @Essential Craftsman, and @ETCG1...well, I guess I'm here for wisdom and commraderie. Stay dirty!
Eric i seen your videos for long time now, i am a mobile Mechanic i cant even began to imagine how stress you must be after the move of all your stuff as a Mechanic i know we have tons of tools and moving them can be harder to find them now you have to start over remember where goes from scratch.
The video with sue was great, you should do more video's with that format. Only problem is its with 1A Auto which has a sleeze ball looking owner selling **** after market parts. So that format with another independent youtuber probably is best. Where they take care of production and you just do the video with them. Simply having two people do anything is leaps better because its just more engaging to watch. It almost doesn't matter the subject at hand. IF you do decide to work more with 1AAuto Hopefully you make them pay you a lot of money because they are getting a huge boost from your brand. GL Eric. You are the OG.
1A does have a lot of good videos, but are pretty heavy on 'replacement' of things vs 'repair' options that many subs actually want. They had one, with Sue I think regarding hazed headlights and the video was all about simply replacing them. Even my old Murano would run $150-200 to replace the front pair. Vs $25 in a headlight restoration kit or compound and good 2K UV clear coat. I like Rock Auto, they might be interested in partnering/sponsoring a small shop for you. I think they'd be glad to get someone of your caliber/presence as they see all their competitors getting free advertising/SM views. Even if it was just paying the rent on a small space.
@@boots7859 I totally agree with RockAuto, although they practically don't spend any money in their marketing division. Probably how they managed to be so cheap, yet so good.
Thank you for that input. From an insiders point of view, working with the crew at TRQ was one of my best working experiences as a producer. They were very accommodating and their production staff is excellent. Thanks again for the input.
World Pac and CTI are always looking for automotive trainers to teach their material at local classes. Might be a source of income you could look into also that doesn't require full time commitment. Get a hold of me and I could help you get more information on that if it seems like something you might entertain or at least point you to someone that could help.
Whatever you decide to do, good luck and Godspeed, my dude. You have inspired so many of us to be proactive on maintaining and fixing our own vehicles.
Good choices with 1A auto. I get all my 2011 Nissan Rogue parts from them and use my learning experiences from you to maintain my 100k vehicle. Yes 100k on a 12 yr old vehicle. 👍
Hey Eric! I’m a trucker and I drive through Cinci every night. Whenever I pass performance Honda I always wonder if you worked there. Glad to see you back!
It is great his subscribers are continuing to go up, I do worry about the steady decline in video views during his hiatus/slow-down (at least according to social blade). The one will eventually stop the other, and the algorithm can hold a grudge for a long time, as you get back into it.
Do whatever YOU want to do. And if you ever do get another shop, I'll happily help move you in just like I helped move you out. I appreciate the the videos you have been able to make.
I have a 7th gen Civic and if your videos were books, every page would be dog-eared and have greasy fingerprints. Thanks for your videos and insights and good luck in the future for whatever you decide. You have a lot of faithful followers here.
Hey, no problem. Post production stuff can be a major time sink. Video editing is never "quick". 'Love your approach to the situation. It keeps you healthy, your partners getting more business and best of all, helps us repair our vehicles. Kudos to TRQ and 1A Auto. Guess what? Next time I need parts, guess who I'll look up? Thanks again and job well done.
I can remember several years ago when I came across your channel and how great it was to have someone with your knowledge/skill producing videos in the way of the DIYer, so helpful. In my opinion though it is when You tubers get bigger that they seem to forget their roots regarding DIY content. I appreciate the garage style videos that you produce. Looking forward to your continued success.
I really like that Eric's videos (unlike some of those other channels) have always been things one person can do with or without a shop or a hoist (with little exception, like dropping the engine and cross members). Even the Fairmont and Truck projects were attainable. I don't remember him using a CNC machine, a lathe, a plasma table, or his own personal dyno. The hydraulic press is a bit of an exception, but I think he usually offers alternative methods. Maybe I am forgetting something though.
@@FixingWithFriends I agree, I appreciate how ETG acknowledges when there are multiple ways to do a job, and shows each of the possible methods that might work.
I agree, that's why I've produced a bunch of DIY videos with TRQ and 1A Auto, links in the description. I'm shifting my focus to be more in line with people like you working out of their home garage. As for when you get 'big' as a RU-vidr, it's not as glamorous as you might think. It's a ton of work that keeps growing exponentially. In that situation it becomes very difficult to keep everyone happy, the viewers included. My focus now is getting back to the DIY type of mentality to help those that may need it the most. If that means partnering up with other channels and doing more social media video, so be it. Thanks for your comment.
Miss the videos Eric definitely helped me over the years learn and keeping my cars going can’t wait for your return and showing up to another meet and greet
So glad to see content resume on this channel😍 You won't believe if I told you, but not less than a thousand times I checked this channel & the notifications setting to be sure I was not missing any updates😅 All the Best Bro👍🏻
Honestly, I get it. You got me into car repair more than a decade ago but you have mainly been going sideways for years. In your early videos you enjoyed filming and editing and playing with being a content creator. The best solution I see is to partner with someone with a young team doing the filming, editing and posting so you can focus on teaching and storytelling. This was always your strong side. All the best! You feel like an old friend 😊❤
Glad ya are still posting videos, even if not at the frequency of before, I know searching for a shop to own can be a pain considering the current market being overpriced and high interest rates
I miss the frequency of the old videos but if you are burned out i totally understand. Ive been there. Maybe in the future you will find an editor and can make them like you used to, but you do what you need.
You are really important to so many of us Eric. There is no way my '03 Element would be running as well as it is (knock on wood) without your clear step-by-step videos that I've followed for so many needed repairs and general maintenance. Whatever you do moving forward, I sure hope you stay connected with us. Best wishes always!
We appreciate what you do for the community buddy. Of recent days, your 2003 Pilot series has been a huge help for me as I have the same car and is recently starting to experience some transmission issues (I'm assuming, still think it could be driveline related). Your videos have helped with the initial understanding of where things are located and general servicing of the car. I hope you can continue to be the example for us DIYers and home garage mechanics, the information and insights you possess is invaluable to us.
Thank you! I'm sad to report that the transmission is most likely the issue. It's all too common unfortunately. The reman that I got from Go-Powertrain is working great though. Good hunting.
I'm a big fan of yours and your videos. Maybe a format like "This Old House" where you visit viewers homes and tackle small projects with a sponsorship. Anyway, best of luck in the future.
Don't give up Eric, keep moving forward. You have a great personality for doing RU-vid videos and I like the manner you explain things. Maybe Eric 2.0 is a garage setup just like all of us. Good luck Eric, I think you are on the right path. 🙂
I don't blame you one bit. Being a senior, I've had to adjust occupations numerous times in my life. I have already viewed your joining of TRQ & 1A auto. They are a great team also. As long as you're putting out info, doesnt matter how.👍
:( I had gotten my hopes up. But YES, economy wise I definitely get it. At this point you might as well wait for If/when the market drops (as it always does at some point)... as long as it isn't so long that RU-vid's algorithm hides your channel. But I liked your idea of partnering, it seemed to work fairly well and thank you for continuing forward.
Glad to hear you’re still interested in the cause - you are missed. “That level” of video production might not be as difficult as you think… Thanks for the update.
Hi Eric- i think it's a great idea for you to work with 1AAUTO. They get more brand exposure to sell parts using their shop/equipment. Hopefully you can come up with something that works for both of you - a revenueshare/partnership sounds like the ticket. You have built a great reputation on YT and you should do what you love. This is why running a business is taxing when you only enjoy a portion of doing it and get rid of the stuff that brings you dread. If you have any land at your home I personally would get the largest carport type structure you can to work out of for storage and doing one-off videos.
Keep it up its great to see new videos at home work is like going back to your roots I came across your channel when you were in your first shop and it was very relatable but I was also awesome to watch you grow and take on bigger builds either way you go still makes amazing content!
