Back in early March 2015 I went to the dealership to check out a 2010 Ford F150. It was a nice truck and I was considering trading in my 2004 Honda Element toward it. Well, it didn't work out as well as I had hoped and this video is the story of that experience. It also contains some used car buying tips for when you go to the dealer. If nothing else I hope my story helps you should you be looking to purchase a new vehicle from the dealer.
I hope you enjoy the video. Thanks for watching.

Bingo! I always tell people never to fall in love with a car, truck, or motorcycle until you really inspect it and look it over or have a professional look at it. Ive seen people loose money because they fell in love and ignored the glaring issues.

I had a similar experience. I bought a 2000 camaro ss. Car seemed great at first on the test drive. The dealer was 2 hours away so I was very motivated on buying it. There was some noise coming from the blower, the salesman of course was clueless about it. They had told me the clutch was new.. That was a lie. All in all, I bought the car. And spent $1100 on a new clutch. My shop gave me a list of issues. Including a freeze plug behind the cam, that was on its way to falling into my oil pan. Clutch in the car was toast and full of oil. Transmission wasn't fully bolted onto the engine. Mounting points for the slave were stripped. I basically chucked it up and bought everything brand new from GM and had everything done professionally. I'm happy with the car now. Runs perfect. My advice: Be patient. Good video Eric.

***** another way to know if she is starting to slip start in first make it rev a little just to make it move like 15mile and but in 3rd or 4th and press on the gaz not wot but a good push if the engine is forcing the clutch aint slipping but if it just goes to the red light its burned!

+BBISHOPPCM's World It's like the people that expect to sell their diesel trucks with an insane amount of miles on it for upwards of 15-25. I saw someone on facebook trying to sell an 08 cummins 2500. Body looked good from the pictures, said the tranny was rebuilt at 100k, original head gaskets, chrome wheels, and had a bunch of other stuff with it. But wanted 16.5 and it had 271k on it. I've never owned a diesel as I'm still on my first car(2000 CRV), but this truck is half as old as my CRV, and has 90k more miles on it. I don't care if it's a diesel or not, or whatever the hell it has on it, no way in hell would I even consider spending 16.5 on something with that many miles on it. I bought the CRV for 2 back in 2012 and I wouldn't even want to spend 1000 on it now. To me, that's a truck that's bound to have problems in the very near future with that much put onto that engine already. I understand people say diesels will last a while if they're taken care of, but that doesn't matter to me when mileage comes into play
@autofreak7
@autofreak7 8 лет назад
+Masterown35 Actually young cars with high mileage means a lot of highway miles. Highway miles are about one third of city/suburb miles.Certainly for a diesel, never buy an old, low mileage car since it would have high risks of worn engines.
@Masterown35
@Masterown35 8 лет назад
autofreak7 Even still that's a lot of miles for a car that's half as old as my own that's been on it's fair share of highways
@bbishoppcm
@bbishoppcm 8 лет назад
+autofreak7 I drive about 25,000 miles a year... none of it highway. High miles doesn't always mean "highway." In my case, it's 100% poorly maintained twisty, hilly, rutted New England backroads at speeds ranging from 30mph to 45mph. In short, I inevitably beat the shit out of my vehicles.
@loganeley2342
@loganeley2342 8 лет назад
+Logan Eley also older diesel pickups have more power than a many new gasoline engines still. which means they are still very viable tow vehicles. on top of that diesels get great fuel mileage, 20-40% better than the comparable gasoline engine. so older diesels can get the same mileage as newer gasoline engines sometimes better.

A guy at work had an old County 1 ton stepside with a 327 two barrel and a 4 speed with the granny low. He was selling it so I gave him $800. I added a trailer hitch to tow my '62 Chevy II to the track. The first time I did, it smoked like crazy, I had to down shift to 3rd to make it up hills, then it over heated. When I got home, it had used 2 qts of oil and a half a tank of gas. I looked through the Recycler and found a 350 Chevy for sale. The motor was disassembled and it came with forged pistons already assembled on the rods, ported heads and a crank kit including bearings and a gasket set for $500. I had the block align honed and honed the cylinders myself. I micro polished the crank and assembled the motor, adding an Extreme Energy Cam, an Edelbrock dual plane high rise and a 650 Holly double pumper. Threw on some Hooker headers to boot. I spent a day swapping motors. Since the motor looked great, I removed all the paint and had a local body shop primer and paint the truck for $300. Then I added new rims and tires. I blacked out all the chrome and threw a new seat cover on the bench seat. My next trip out to the drag strip, I could pass cars going up hill with plenty of pedal to spare. The truck never got over 180 degrees and used half the amount of gas. All in all, I had less than $3K into the truck. Then one night, someone stole it. That was 35 years ago and it's never been recovered. I suspect it's in Mexico.

For me, I needed something to tow my '62 Chevy II to the drag strip. One of the guys at work was selling an old '69 Chevy 1 ton step side with the original 327, two barrel and 4 speed. The motor was tired so I gave him $900 for it. It was an old County truck. Though it would tow my race car, it smoked and used oil, plus I had to down shift going up grades. I found a disassembled 350 for sale in the Recycler. The machine work was done, the heads pocket ported with new valves and it came with forged pistons, so I bought it. I added an RV cam, high raise manifold with a 650 Holley and headers. The truck ran great, used no oil towing and had enough power to accelerate up grades, towing the race car. I stripped the paint myself and had it painted for $300.

I just bought a 2005 F150 with only minor rust, which will be repaired this summer. The previous owner was very good about rinsing the salt off in winter, and was good about regular maintenance. Everything works on it. It only had minor issues, like the rear brakes were worn out and the power steering lines were pretty rusty. It also needed a tune-up. I got the truck pretty cheap and fixed all the problems AND perceived potential future problems, and changed all the fluids for about $400. Now everything is in excellent shape. I expect a good reliable pickup with no real problems for years.

Had a Ranger from '07-'10, then an F150 from '10-'16. Both had that same parking brake issue, among other brake issues like the calipers locking up. The side steps also rusted heavily like you mentioned, even though I garaged it the entire time :-o Back to Acura now and couldn't be happier. That being said, I'll need a truck again at some point and am going to target a late 90s Toyota. Great vid, thanks Eric.

I had a similar experience for the truck I just bought. It's a 2013 Ram 6.7 Cummins. Salesman was great, dealership was great, even sales manager was excellent. Test drive went good, truck had low miles excellent condition and ended up buying. Truck did have 2 dents on the tailgate and rear bumper and part of the deal was to have the dents removed. Drove it home for a couple of days before I was to drop it off again to have the dents fixed and the check engine light came on. Pulled the code and it was " injection timing cylinder 1" so I figured right away probably a bad fuel injector. Drove it back for dents to be repaired and notified that the check engine light needs to be addressed and fixed and not at my expense. Truck was at the dealer for a week while I was on vacation. Came back excited to pick it up and drive it. Salesman says it's good to go, start it up and check engine light was still on..... salesman said "oh, they must have not addressed this"... had to wait another 3 days for it to be fixed. Truck needed a new injector of course. What bothered me was they had it for a week and I had to drive out of my way coming back from vacation and it was never fixed even though I saw the salesman write down "fix dents and check and address check engine light"

I work at a Mazda dealer and we get customers who want us to fix things wrong with our used cars all the time. We always honor that and fix the cars. I don't know why some dealers don't do that since half of what the dealer needs to do is earn money and the other half is to have a good reputation through customer reviews.

I live in Texas. Trucks are a HUGE market here. They are such a huge market that I had to drive 2 hours out of my way to get a decent deal on a 2013 F-150 because everything local was overpriced by $4000 since the stealerships knew there was demand. It's crap and it's annoying.

I just have to put my 2 cents in. I've worked at three dealerships as a tech. On inspections, I've written laundry lists of items that need repair. Then sales dept turns around and says "just put wiper blades on it". How I've experienced it is the sales and service dept are practically different businesses. Don't blame service, unless service missed something. We are not going to replace a battery unless sales buys a battery. Here is a buying tip. Ask to see the inspection report. You'll see what the tech recommended. Often times dealers only do visual and serious safety items.

Same thing happened with my wife and I when we bought her Honda Civic. I did the pre-purchase inspection and the only thing wrong with it was the front pads looked gross (like covered in bugars or something) and it was clear there was only about a month left before they started squealing. I told my wife if she wanted the car, she should demand they replace the pads and rotors, because it's super cheap and easy for a dealership to make that happen. She told them, and they came back with, "our technicians say the brakes are fine". I suggested she walk away, but she really wanted the car anyways so she just let it go. Sure enough a month later she was asking me to help pay for new pads and rotors because she had no money left for repairs after spending her savings on the down-payment and incurring a new car payment, and insurance. I just laughed and told her to get a better job.

Same, I have a '97 that I just bought that has 400,000 miles on it with no rebuild and a blown transmission. The engine runs great (leaks oil from the rear main) but the transmission has a worn out 3-4 clutch pack so I'll probably just end up buying a used tranny and rebuild the motor. I got a great deal on the truck, The body is in excellent shape and was a daily driver most of it's life with almost 90% highway miles. The previous owner is a good friend of mine so I know it was taken care of, I actually did a good portion of the auto work on that truck for him. Honestly just looking at the truck you would never know how many miles are on it.

Yeah the newer 5.7 vortec engines seem to have that problem, Lucas oil definitely slows down a rear main leak, The previous owner went from putting in a good 2-3 quarts of oil between oil changes to about half a quart between changes now, He just substituted a quart of standard oil for lucas oil when he'd do a change. Unfortunately though it has that common chevy problem of the dash cluster going out randomly for days at a time and on top of that the odometer hasn't worked for the last 2 years or so (Stopped at 355k) lol.

Eric, I don't count your money, I count mine. I have done a very good job of managing mine by not buying what I want, but buying what I need. The only things that I buy that I want are things that make money for me like tools and equipment. I sincerely hope that your videos are making you a better living than your auto repairs did. When you can buy needed equipment as needed rather than have to wait for a sponsor to provide it for you that will be a sign that you have made it. Then it will be the time to consider discretionary purchases like a new truck.

A new car depreciates a lot once you put the wheels on the street, but it also save you a lot of money on repairs over the years, specially if you take good care of it. VW Jetta 2013, 7 years old, 100,000 miles and only $200.00 in repairs at a VW dealer. Maintenance = engine oil change every 10,000 miles, transmission flush every 50,000 miles. I still have the original brake pads. I have replaced burned bulbs.

Sounds like you made the right choice. There's plenty of cars out there. My experience with second hand cars, is that people just abandon them and give up on them, because there is something wrong with it. As you said, you inherit someone's problem. Don't feel bad man. All the dealership so I live for that same way they would rather pinch a penny to make a dime. I usually buy used, so you could find some decent trucks on Facebook sites anymore, like your own little private showing of which vehicle you were looking for you can find it usually at decent prices too and you can fix it up make videos like you said but I've turned down many deals from dealerships and I walked in there especially when they try to lowball you cuz you know what you would you have is worth more than what they're offering. Personally I hate when dealerships do that to people but I think you made the right decision good luck buddy.

I looked at a 2005 dodge ram 2500 laramie QCSB. It was a nice truck kind of like what you were dealing with. Had the 5.9 CTD, and really good service records, like really really good, but it had problems. The steering box leaked a bit, it had a few dents, the tires would soon need replacing, the dual zone climate control only worked properly on the driver side(common problem on those), I pulled the codes with the on off key trick, and it had battery codes as well as a fuel rail pressure code. Truck drove okay, had a very rough ride and the steering wheel wasnt straight, but other than that, it genuinely was a good truck. I told them the problems, they said 22k on a 125k mile truck. Several days went by and I decided to pass on it. I bought another truck for just a couple grand more about a week later, and it was way nicer and was exactly what I actually wanted. Well a couple days after i picked up that truck, I am heading home and I see the truck I almost bought, kind of, on the side of the road with a tow truck giving it a lift onto the bed. Needless to say, it just never felt right and that was why. I looked over that truck a ton, and I knew it and it told me to be wary. I learned to be truly patient after that. Especially with someone like myself who wants a very specific something, only a few hundred trucks were made like the one I have. If you want something, WAIT FOR IT.

Hey, if you live in north Florida go to auto match USA. I bought my first truck ever there. (I'm 16) and they were the best my dad is knowledgable of cars and he gave them a list of some stuff to fix about 700-800 bucks worth. And they actually fixed it all. EVERYTHING brand new parts. Best experience that my family has ever had and we buy a lot of cars.

Tip: ALWAYS BRING A MECHANIC FRIEND! They'll help point out things you may have missed. Also, CRASH TAGS! They're the small VIN sticker on each body panel (fenders, hood, bumper) that show that it's the original body panel. If it's painted over, missing... WALK AWAY! I learned the hard way :(

You were 100% right to walk away, Eric. Buy something from a private party. You're obviously capable of checking out the condition. You'll get a much better deal, and you won't leave feeling like you need to take a shower.

Look into a 1st gen Toyota Tundra 4.7L Double Cab Limited. My dad's '04 is an excellent towing truck. They're trailer brake controller ready. Super nice to work on as well.

Smart idea. Getting into a 4 year loan on a rusty used Ford with a plethora of leading indicators of problems would have been a bad deal for you. There's plenty of iron out there to buy, keep looking!

The rust makes since it was Canadian after all up where I'm at in the high desert of California we get a little bit of snow during Christmas time but Caltrans quit using salt and uses rocks or red gravel on the roads now so our rust is minimal.

Hey Eric, not sure if you check these out that much but I had a thought! Scary, i know! lol Have you ever thought about live streaming a repair? I think that would be neat to see. I'm sure difficult and long but you could find a smaller repair or something. Just a thought. Keep up the good work!

Pre-owned certified really is the only way to go if one is considering a used car long term. The warranty and the backing it gets is worth the extra cost. As my dad says "Cheap has its own price."

That parking break issue is incredibly common, you just need to adjust it manually with a screwdriver. You don't even need to take it apart to adjust it. Also it will eat every gallon of gas you put in with great enthusiasm.

Eric, you own a Honda, you worked on Hondas, get a Honda Ridgline. It has a 3.5L J series engine, which your familiar with, plus VTM-4 traction control, 1500Lbs payload capacity, 5000Lbs towing. Only drawback is short cargo bed. On the flip side its a crew cab. Take one for a test drive and see what you think.
@loganeley2342
@loganeley2342 8 лет назад
sorry that Ridgeline is not all that. 5,000 lb payload is low for a truck. that truck I'm pretty sure if built on the odessy chassis. not quite the beffy frame needed to get a lot done. that payload and towing capacity seems like a lot but the weight adds up quick. that f-150 probably weighed 5,000 pounds. on top of that l doubt Ridgelines come with a proper tow package and trailer brake controller, with properly sized brake components to stop a load. There not bad a vehicle but there not quite a good truck either. I bet they are reliable and people love the way they look not you can do a lot more with an actual half ton on a an actual truck frame and chassis.

+Logan Eley they are good trucks for somebody who occasionally needs a truck to tow a utility trailer, or make a run to the landfill, but it's not enough to haul a car trailer, and yes it is based on the odyssey

ive got a 2004. parking brake was sticking followed briansmobile1's video and got that fixed. turned out it needed a rear right cable as well. parking brake light issue is in the guage cluster/electrical connector apparently a broken trace on the pcb. calipers are easy as you have shown. everything is fixable but the dealership should have handled you better.

Would love to see you do more videos of GM vehicles. I know they may not come into the shop as often as some ;-) but, if you do decide to buy a truck keep it GM. Had many. Cheap to fix. They ALL break down.

Hey +ETCG1 , if you haven't already looked at them, the Chevy 1500HD's are pretty nice. My dad has a 2003 model: 4 doors, 6.0 Liter, and factory towing package if I'm not mistaken. The downside of course is gas mileage, as it gets 11 on the highway.

Chevy used to make a 6.2 liter diesel a powerful engine that was also good on gas they had it in the 1990's trucks I would highly recommend it for what you're talking about doing.

I'm thinking about moving to the US just so that when I buy a new vehicle it doesn't rust out within a few years. Not having to brush the snow off a car and scrape off the windshield and warm the vehicle up so you don't get frostbite on the inside would just be a bonus :)
@Jacksonkellyfreak
@Jacksonkellyfreak 9 лет назад
Eric I would seriously consider one of the older diesel trucks from the 90s. They're simple to work on and cheap to get parts for. Even something like a 92-94 7.3 IDI would be more than adequate to tow cars with and get good economy, plus you'd get to break into diesel videos. Or one of the cummins trucks but they're considerably more expensive. Even the GM 6.5 turbo but they are extremely hard to find with a manual, and autos from the diesel trucks don't typically hold up too well.

From personal experience, Fords have had a problem with the parking brake cable not releasing properly since the '70s (and probably before), so no surprise that a '10 still had the problem.

I love working on vehicles (my hobby), but HATE RUST! Last year I got a 2004 F150 and made a point to get it from a low-rust state. Found one in Tennessee, and it looks like new underneath! Shipping to NY was reasonable and well worth it.

Yep 5.0 is what you want. The company i work for have 25 of them, We started with the F150's in 2010 and the common problems are hub assemblies ,4X4 modules and cracked mag wheels.

I suggest you look into buy a Dodge 2500 or 3500 with a Cummins. I own a '99 model 3500 with the 5.9 24 valve Cummins. My dad has a '97 Dodge 2500 with the 12 valve 5.9 Cummins. both trucks are very dependable. I get between 14.5 - 15.3 mpg in town and 16 - 18.3 mpg highway, and all the towing power I need. They have also been very nice, comfortable, and dependable long trip trucks.

Had a similar experience with a local used car salesmen. Looked at a F-150, v8 engine, 4x4, manual tranny. Took it for a test drive. Tried engaging the 4x4 but got here nothing. Looked under the truck and discovered there was no transfer case...lol. The truck was NOT a 4x4. The dash 4x4 component had been installed to make it look like a 4x4. Looked under the hood and discovered a v6...not a v8 (truck had the v8 emblem on it's side). Supposedly their mechanic went through it....lol. Needless to say I did NOT buy the truck nor return to that lot.

had a similar experience this past September. My car finally kicked it so I set out on Craigslist for something I wanted and found a Saturn Ion with a 5 speed and moon roof and in bright red so it ticked most of my boxes. The guy said that a wheel beating was going out and I thought that would something I could get home and fix reasonably so but when I drove the car it pulled so hard to the left that it was almost uncontrollable and I lived about half an hour away. It was also pretty rusty in the undercarriage so I had to say no and walk. Ended up with my accent. It has no sunroof but its a manual and has been a damn good car for 750 bucks

Wow Eric I feel you man. I'm 19 years old so when I was looking for trucks everything was 10 years old or so that I could afford. I began looking at f150s for 3 months and finally realized they were all far too expensive and beat up to really get what I wanted. So I looked at silverados and sure enough I found an 05 that was well within my price range with the 5.3. I like the 5.4 and have driven with that engine (2 and 3 valve) alot but dang, the 5.3 kicks the pants off it! I really like how the 5.3 tows too. From my experience towing with both motors I'd go 5.3 chevy or dodge 5.7 all day...not the 5.4 ford. Others will of course disagree and I would have before I bought my truck too but dang I gotta admit, chevy makes a good v8 engine! Sadly though, I had the same situation with the used car dealership messing around a bit on doing repairs. Luckily the did all the repairs...just not some to the standards they needed to be done but I took care of it. I can't complain too much. Good luck shopping!

I think your followers all know this, but it what amazes me is how few people know the power of getting a tech to inspect the vehicle before buying it. I do pre and post inspections all the time, and only post inspection let people down, hek I've seen a person buy a boxter "s" that the previous owner did a good job of making a base model look like a S.

I ended up buying a beater after having a similar experience with a dealer. I ended up with a 2006 Ram 1500 quad cab, 4x4, with the 5.7L Hemi and only 58k miles, paid cash for it (yay, no loan!). Definitely has more power than my gf's 2010 F150 5.4L. I think you did just fine by not buying the truck. The 5.0L in the newer F150s is a better engine and is even more technician-friendly. Love the 5.0L in my work truck (2013 F150 4x4 SuperCrew).

For a beater under $5K considering tow ability, reliability and ease of maintenance I would say good potential candidates are 88-93 dodge w/318 or 360, chevys with the 5.3 or 6.0, or 90's fords with the 302 or straight six.
