this is a easy fun way you can etch any bare metal! I've used this on cups and tools. you could etch anything metal! jewelry, cups, signs, tools you name it! it only take a 9volt battery, salt, water, some wires to connect the batteries to your material, some cotton, and a sticker, cricket vinyl, or just tape( something to use as a stencil for your etch)

i've watched a ton of electro-etching videos and this was by far the most helpful! i have a question: it looks like you put a red wire (the first one you attached) alligator clip on the negative lead of the battery on the left. what kind of wire was that? i'm confused about the wiring part.

Right, so I wired my batteries in series for this. You do that by connecting the (+) of one battery to the (-) of the other this doubles the voltage but is not really needed. You can use 1 - 9v battery if you would like . It may just take a little longer. I used a red wire because thats what I had. The color of the wire doesn't change anything. You can use black on (-) or (+) its used so you can easily identify which wire you connected to whatever terminal without having to look back at the battery. This might have been more info than you needed but I hope I cleared that up for you. Thanks for the kind comment!

Can I use a rechargeable 9 volt battery instead of a regular one?

Hey Dan, what is the water-to-salt ratio that you used?

It doesnt have to be exact. I'd say maybe 1 part salt to 4-8 parts water.

Is it safe to etch on powertool using this method?

I'd say it probably could work. But it might depend on the tool. And I'd make sure it was unplugged and / or battery removed. Also don't use alot of water so it won't drop into your electrical wires/motors. Test out the process on some scrap metal like a wrench or something.
