It's mostly about there being way too many characters and backstory they tried to go through in one movie, while also having an actual plot. I just really feel like Eternals would have been much better as a Disney+ series where they would have had enough time to properly do all of that.

I agree that this movie was long and had too many characters and too many locations for one movie. However, I did enjoy it (enough). I thought it was beautifully shot. I thought Makaari’s depiction of super speed was my favorite version of that I’ve ever seen. And come on, I can’t complain about 2 hours of staring at Gemma Chan, Angelina Jolie, Lauren Ridloff and Salma Hayek! Being on the bottom portion of the list of MCU movies ain’t bad.

Had they worked some of these characters into earlier movies, not major introductions but more in a foreshadowing manner, I think the reception of this movie would have been much better. Somebody mentioned the more times you watch this, the more endearing it becomes. I strongly agree. The director was handed a tough hand, but I think she did really well.

fun fact: Druig's beaded bracelet (on his left wrist with his leather jacket) is actually Makkari's! Chloé herself confirmed to me Druig likes to "borrow" from Makkari from time to time (and took her bracelet). I love that detail, and that he still has it after all this time, especially since their relationship wasn't planned in the script at all, was added last minute to the film and Barry and Lauren improvised most of it! (Originally, it was supposed to be Druig and Sersi before Chloé saw Barry and Lauren's chemistry! 🤗)

I remember liking the movie, but I had no expectations for it, I still think it holds up as a good movie and I agree it would've been better served as a series. I really like both Druig and Makkari, their relationship has basically no screentime and still some of the most chemistry I've felt in the MCU. Eternals has been storically a hard series to get into on the comics since, basically no one could REALLY make it work. Mind you there are still some good runs despite that. If someone is interested in reading Eternals I would recommend Kieron Gillen's run on them from 2021, its the best Eternal's run and it is actually really good.

Eternals is GORGEOUS. And used the least CGI of any Marvel film, the director begged to use real locations. Fun facts ... in the comics, Ajak, Sprite and Makkari were originally male. When this film came out, their appearances changed to match their movie looks. The comics Eternals were always able to resurrect themselves even if blasted to atoms... the then current writer revealed they could change their appeared every so often upon resurrection. Kind of like Doctor Who. In the film, Makkari had a lot of pop culture junk in her hideout near the end of the movie. The comics version was constantly making pop culture references in their male form. In addition, comics Makkari wasn't deaf until becoming female.. .the in-story reason was she lost her hearing in recent times breaking the sound barrier, I believe. Gilgamesh and Sersi were both Avengers in the 1990s comics. Sersi served for a long time alongside Vision, Black Widow, Thor and Captain America. In the comics, the Greek (Olympic) gods exist alongside the Asgardians, and the Greek gods and Eternals have an ongoing feud as they have similar names (Thena/Athena, Ikaris/Icarus, Makkari/Mercury, etc.) However, in the comics Sersi the Eternal *IS* the Circe of Greek myth ... she claims she changed the spelling of her name. Harry Styles character from the end, Eros the Starfox, was also an Avenger for a time.

Marvel really did create an impossible task for themselves with this film. Trying to introduce 10+ main characters and give all of them enough screen time to outline their personalities and give them all meaningful character development in the runtime of one feature length film. Personally I think this would have fared much better as first a TV series charting their arrival on Earth up until present day, then the movie focusing on present day events. Credit for trying though because I can remember all of their names so they must have done something right. Overall I think this move is slightly underrated. Also KL, if you haven't penciled it in yet, you need to add X-Men '97 to your schedule somewhere because that show is WILD! Thanks for the content 🙂

Agree 100% on wishing this movie was, instead, a series. This movie basically amounted to Marvel throwing MCU Phases 1 and 2, i.e. the OG Avengers, at us all at once. Agree 100% on this movie being better after a rewatch. Even just watching this reaction to it made me re-think/better understand certain aspects of the story, in part through rewatching the scenes you included, and in part to hearing your comments about them. The initial teaser trailer for this movie got me more hyped for an MCU property than almost any other (excluding Avengers ones). I liked the final product more than most people, but the hypothetical one suggested by that teaser would've been S-tier. Worth checking out that teaser if you can pretend you didn't just watch the final product! It sounds like the sequel has been scrapped, but I'm really hoping to see more of these characters folded into some other property like a Thor/Captain Marvel/Guardians or soemthing.

I enjoyed this movie. These are the Eternals, following the reboot of the characters (with gender swapping) in the 2000's. When they were created in 1976, they weren't robots, but since they were on Earth people mistook them for the Greek gods and worshipped them. Zuras, the leader was mistaken for Zeus, Thena for Athena, Makkari for Mercury. You get the idea, the best Celestial and Eternal story was called "The Celestial Saga" from 1980, the story wrapped up in Thor #301, it had the Asgardians and the Eternals fighting together to defeat the Celestials, trying to stop Arishem from destroying the Earth.

I usually don't post before I've watched a video, and I am curious to hear your thoughts. I know it's an unpopular opinion to like this movie, but I absolutely love it. The only problem I had with it is that they tried to cram too much into one movie, and this probably would have worked better as a Disney+ Miniseries. But I still loved it. Which is odd for me because I'm not a big fan of the Eternals in the comics. I wish this had done better because I really wanted to see where they were going to go with this. Hope you enjoyed it at least.

so, for this particular reaction from you, I think it was pretty fair. I really liked the Eternals, a lot. I understand that the lore could be quite deep and grasping the concepts or some of the concepts and remembering the characters might be challenging to some. But, I would say that this could be true of many movies, especially the X-men and Avengers. Which are beloved by many. I have read many comics in the past but was in the dark on most of the Eternals lore. I only knew of Sersi. And it was very limited in scope and I forgot most of it because I had read about her so long ago. And yet, I was still able to understand most of what was going on and still enjoy it. I think one of the things I really like about the movie is that the scope of their powers seems believable, unlike some things in other movies (like Black Widow still being conscious after being hit by the Hulk).

I really, _really_ like the characters and the story they tried to tell. Unfortunately there were just too many characters and too much story to tell in a movie length, even a long one with an opening text crawl and massive amounts of exposition. This would have been _so_ much better as a 10-episode series. You could give each character the development they deserved, extend the flashback sequences, let us sit in their story for a bit.

This is one of THE most underrated MCU movies imo. Sure, I agree that it might have been better conceived as a miniseries, buuuut I am very close to loving this film. I definitely really reaaaally like it! It's one of the few MCU movies, where characters actually discuss their philosophies and motivations, it just goes much deeper than most MCU films. I looove that they made Icarus the villain and that they made the main conflict much less black and white than we're used to. Sure, it still has some shortcomings, but it's one of my favorite MCU films for the characters, the philosophy and all of the shooting at real locations. Say what you will, Chloe Zhao really knows how to create a gorgeous shot! It's actually in my top 3 MCU films, right after Winter Soldier and Civil War. Btw, I looooove Druig. Not just because of the actor, either. I find him very relatable in how he questions everything and is so damn frustrated with humanity and his own mission. Also him and Makkari are goals!

Yeah.... not my favorite movie. I think most of that is because when this came out I was suffering from Post Infinity Saga Ennui, compounded with, let us call it... viral overload. I think everything you said sums it up nicely. Too much of too new and too little time to appreciate or even apprehend most of it. It wasn't hard to follow, but keeping up with everything while not knowing where we were going... I have trouble with mystery stories because of that. Too much too fast. Wait... what? Roll credits. What? What? I'm glad you're almost caught up. I hope the next things up are able to keep me invested. Because, I gotta say... I'm still suffering from Post Infinity Saga Ennui. I think it might actually have hurt less if they'd gone ahead and just made Infinity War and Endgame into one movie. Well... maybe not. I don't know. I liked this, and I was content that it is self-contained. You could watch it without knowing anything else about the MCU, aside from some references to Iron Man, Cap, Thor and Thanos, and follow it. Yes, there were a lot of new characters, but that was also true of X-Men, and no one complained that was too hard to follow. Yes, if you are a fan of mainstream MCU, which is anchored by very human characters and stories, this was overwhelming. As I am also a big sci-fi fan, this ET aspect was in my wheelhouse anyway, just like Guardians of the Galaxy. And FYI, the first Marvel comics team, Fantastic Four, dealt with Earth-threatening ETs from the beginning; they are my favorite team, while Iron Man was also my favorite solo hero. Looking forward to the sequel, or whatever. p.s. I do agree this would have worked well as a TV series, but they didn't know how the ones they were already producing would go, despite having known characters. Also, if you haven't seen yet, while Agents of Shield was on they tried taking a proposed movie in The Inhumans and making a TV series out of it. Was not received well, and there has been no mention of returning to it - despite them being a main story from Fantastic Four. Maybe the MCU FF will get all their ducks in a row, and sort it all out.

I’m surprised that no one has mentioned that Gemma Chan (Sersi) has already appeared in the MCU as a Kree in Captain Marvel. (If it was mentioned, it was buried but I tried to read all the comments) I agree that it’s an underwhelming movie since there’s SO much to share about SO many characters. As an origin story, it takes a long time while not being able to give significant depth to anyone. Makkari and Phastos are my favorites, with Kingo close behind, particularly given his relationship with Karun 😂😂
@HammerdWalrus
@HammerdWalrus 5 месяцев назад
I feel like the reason it gets so much dislike as you said, too many characters being introduced at once. It's like if the MCU started off with an Avengers movie. It started off similarly to Age of Ultron in the way of all the main cast right off the bat, not necessarily in the way it started with a major Action scene. A series would've definitely fared better than this movie, but the movie is still wonderful. Also, Makkari's actress (Lauren Ridloff) is actually deaf. Angelina Jolie also came up with the idea of using a laser pointer for Lauren Ridloff as a cue since she wouldn't be able to hear the audio cues for scenes as she would often be facing a wall.

ok let me clear things up for you..Kit's character is apart of a family line that holds a powerful sword that allows the user to become what is known as a Black Knight but it comes with a price..every kill made with the sword takes more and more away from the user's soul until they are completely lost to darkness. That is what happened to his uncle and the reason he has not spoken to him in years. Thanos himself was an Eternal mixed with a Diviant hence his skin color was purple and he was so big in size. Thanos did the snap to save the world from the Celestiral coming out and destroying it go figure. Any way the voice was the MCU's version of Blade and if you have not seen those movies I recommend you watch the first two it's with Westley Snipes...basically he is a half human and half vampire vampire slayer. The actress of Makari really is deph and the part where she silently screams when durig gets'killed' was the actress doing so it wasn't in the script. I love this movie,I know most don't but I don't care I thought it was really good and interesting as well.

I don't think it's a spoiler bc this is all in the wiki, but Kit Harrington plays Dane Whitman, who in comics is a character Black Knight. And the post credit he is spoken to by Mahershala Ali who is playing Blade. So it appears they were setting him up to be in Blade, BUT that movie and the MCU as a whole has had so many changes, so Kits character may just be forgotten to the MCU.

Mahershala Ali was the voice Dane heard. He's playing Blade the same character from the Wesley Snipes movies.

I'm in the "really enjoyed it" crowd for this one. Some is down to it being an interesting story, some down to my having enjoyed other stories about immortal characters and their lives through the ages (Poul Anderson's novel, "The Boat of a Million Years", springs to mind - another story that I know some people love and others really don't). Some doubtless simply comes from the novelty of having barely any knowledge of these characters beforehand - 'tis always fun to be introduced to something new, e.g. I recognised the crest on Dane's ring immediately from having seen the action figure of his comic appearance, but I couldn't tell you anything about him beyond his superhero codename and describing his costume, so I'm looking forward to learning more. I've also since learned whose voice that was offscreen at the end - a character I'm a little more familiar with - I wonder what their connection will be?

Will say.. Upon release reviews put this as THE WORST MCU movie. I never got that. I didn't think it was the best, but i enjoyed a lot of the relationships, i thought the premise was cool, effects great of course, and the effects on the universe as a whole. Also love Thena and Gilgamesh's relationship. So wholesome Plus seeing John Snow and Robb Stark was fun

Arishem has been lying to Deviants and Eternals. He acts like they’re the only ones who create the universe but the truth is there’s much older beings called The Builders who have been building for a much longer time. Arishem is just looking to create more Celestials. So he can rule over them and then the universe.
@Alewaxon
@Alewaxon 5 месяцев назад
That's based on the comics (SOME of the comics even, not every run), not the MCU... So far, nothing of what Arishem said about them or their role or what he explains to be the order of "things" has been shown or even implied to be wrong or a lie... So, until that point (if they do it at all), the assumption is that IN THE MCU, Celestial are and do what Arishem said they do... Yeah, I'm the comics you have Builders, Beyonders, hell! even "The One Above All", but none of that is canon to the MCU so far; so unless/until they disprove it, this is what IT is.

@@robertsanssouci2093 What? Is there are reason why you are so hilariously touchy or butt hurt in that response? There is not a single ounce of hostility in my comment and you came out swinging like you life depended on it 🤣... Also; no, you have very little clue where the story is going or what would be adapted from the comics and what isn't... neither do I... Unless you are telling me that you work side by side with Feige himself then you, like any of us, are just guessing and speculating based on SOME knowledge about SOME preexisting material... This definitely would've been better as a series. Everyone needed an episode as an introduction with a movie length final episode that was roughly 90 mins. With so many characters to introduce there wasn't enough time to get to know all the Eternals. This movie did so poorly that the sequel is no longer happening as of right now. Maybe in the future phases.

I personally am a big fan of this movie, and I feel like a lot of the criticisms it gets are very weak. All the powers the Eternals have are super cool, and you're the first reactor I've seen I think who realised just how powerful the Eternals are. Like Druig is able to easily control the mind of every human on the planet, which is mind-bogglingly powerful, Phastos' abilities are underrated in combat, like he showed with prior thought on the technology he was able to slam Ikaris back to the ground and restrain him, even draining his powers. Makahri's speed too is insane. Small detail not many people catch: Around the 10:30 part of this reaction in the movie, one of them asks Druig about a Jade tablet that he apparently had and he denies it. Later on in the scene at 32:29 it shows Ikaris finding the tablet referred to earlier in the Domo and Druig catching him finding it and taking it back with a look at each other like "don't tell them". I always find the acting in that scene hilarious, even better since no one realises what happened

Jack Kirby later work isn't understood as earlier works.. His work for "DC" Darksied and the New God's.. and the Eternals for Marvel.. Sadly the film from Warner Brothers never was completed, Leaving the Marvel side as the only non Stan Lee involved representative of his 1970s output...

Phastos and Mikari (who was male in the comics) were definitely the most likeable characters in this. I always like the Eternals in the comics in the 80s and 90s. But this movie tries to throw too many characters at us and explaining who they were, their powers and about the Deviants and Eternals rather than building emotional connections for us towards these characters. I think this would have done better as a series in that regard rather than a movie. I think Inhumans show soured Marvel on trying to do that though considering how it was received. Great reaction. Looking forward to the next reactions.

Celestials have been introduced before but there are two differences between the MCU and the comics lore. Ego said he was a Celestial but he wasn’t planted in a planet, his instinct to be in one made him create his own. He was a lost Celestial (in the MCU). Grandmaster was another lost Celestial. During Thor’s chair ride, just before being introduced to Grandmaster, the narrator said “He was the first lost and the first found,..” The imagery of the planet Thor was approaching resembled Ego’s. In the comics, these two, along with others, were not Celestials but one step down from them. The Collector was also one of them. They were above Eternals but below Celestials in power and ability in the comics. Luv ya KL. ✌️😊💕

Funny…I’m chuckling over your possible Guardians of the Galaxy rewatch and maybe your changing opinion of it. Truthfully, I can’t remember the specifics of where we “disagreed”, but I appreciate that you might be rethinking your opinion of it for a rewatch. Also, You might want to do that before you get to the Guardians vol 3 movie.

I wish the Disney owning Marvel but Sony owning the rights to Spiderman didn't exist, it makes things so complicated. Like for example, the sword at the end of this film is a Necrosword. Another Necrosword called All Black will show up later in another film, who is later owned by a very powerful much more so than Thanos threat level villain who's not currently in the MCU. Knull, he's a villain of Venom which makes this whole storyline hard to do.

Biggest problem with Phase 4? They introduced us to cool characters like Druid and Makkari then never followed up. We should have a whole TV series about Sprite growing up, or the adventures of Druid and Makkari. There is so much here that is ripe for extension, but the timeline for movie production seems to be measured in decades.

God I love this movie! I will fight to the ends of the earth for it💥would it had worked better as a series for more people? Probably. If they adopted the Neal Gaimen comic run that could’ve helped balance the characters. But personally I love it the way it is..actual sets and locations … deep dense dialogue. Chloe Zao is a goddess of filmmaking!

Yeah, this movie is kind of a mess. It's not really bad in any significant way. Hell, it's actually kinda fun for me unlike the absolute shit they make these last years. All the pieces are actually there, it's just how they are put together doesn't work very well.

Not a big fan of this movie, but I can see why some people like it. Really my biggest issue with the movie is the way they depict ancient people, but it’s not that big of a deal, I just didn’t really care for the plot or characters.
