By the far the best explanation on RU-vid. This is an add for Garmin. All of Garmin antennas are internal. There are no pucks for the graphs, trolling motors and subsequently, no need for the Neama, unless maybe I add the telemetry for my 300r merc.

Kinda off subject, but the new 300r mercury motors require clean power. Can I put a shut off switch on that? I do all of my own work, but had the motor installed. He did not think I could put a shut off. One of my volt meters stays on all the time. I can shut everything else off, so my second Volt meter is off, when it’s off.

Great Explanation! I have a NEMA2000 for My GPS Puck and have one HDSGen3 9' on Console connected to a Structurescan. I just bought a HDS 12" Carbon for bow. I have a HDI Skimmer for trolling Motor. Do I just use the Ethernet to share SS to both HDS? and flip back and forth in front if I want to use the SS vs HDI instead for the BOW or do most guys just use the HDI in front and the SS on console to find a area to start fishing?

Great subject and even better is your explanation. With multiple units networking via the Ethernet cable. Would you then just need to connect unit #1 to the Nema 2000 or do you still have to connect all units to the Nema 2000? I would think only one needs to be connected to the Nema 2000 if the Ethernet cable is used on all units but correct me if I’m wrong.
@NitroZ18Fishing
@NitroZ18Fishing 3 года назад
Thank you, I appreciate that!… All of your units would need to be connected to the NMEA 2K network in order for them to take full advantage, even if they are connected via Ethernet...The reason being that the information shared is different between the two systems… Hope that helps, thanks for watching!

You do not need a "T" for the power. It can be connected directly to the end instead of using a terminator. Call Russell Marine for verification. That is how I set my up and it works fine.
@NitroZ18Fishing
@NitroZ18Fishing 3 года назад
That’s very controversial, to say the least...I have seen people do it the way you’re saying, but some end up having issues which are resolved by adding the power to a “T” and properly using terminators on the ends...to each their own, but I would NOT recommend that at all

I am just learning things about ethernet and NMEA and need to learn fast since I am re-doing my boat GPS system. I luv your explanation and comprehensive enough. But I do have a question: when you connect the backbone to the power source via switch, will the unit like your Lowrance GPS will have power too since the backbone is connected to the Lowrance GPS. The Lowrance GPS has its own power port for connection to a power source. Is there a need to connect the Lowrance or Garmin GPS directly to a power source? Or you just abandon the power port connection of the GPS since it will be powered from the backbone connection.

I got several questions and a few observations that I would like to have you clarify if you a so incline. Ethernet is a protocol (in the data world) what type of cable it uses is another thing is it 4 pairs? 3 pairs, 2 pairs?? is it 1 pair for power and 1 cable for data like the old video cameras would use? As far as the Nmea 2000 (and 0183) is a token ring (old LAN technology). What kind of cable does it use? 4 pairs, 3, 2 or 1 pair for power and 1 for data? What type of encapsulation does the data use? (or What communication protocol?)? Thank you for your video you been more enlighten than most how2 on RU-vid or even written explanations have been about Nmea and "ethernet" for marine use

yea unfortunately you're limited to NMEA with your setup, but they should be able to share waypoints through that (make sure both units are on)...with the Ti2 made for "wireless networking", there's no way to utilize Ethernet between it and the Gen2...now if you had multiple Ti2's that's a different story...hope that helps!

Since the NMEA 2000 network is powered, do you need individual power cords for each fish finder, or will they receive power from the back bone? Also can you extend NMEA cables if they are too short? Is there a maximum length for a NMEA cable? Very informative video. Thanks for taking the time to put this together…
@Muruch
@Muruch 9 месяцев назад
If I understand the guidelines correctly, power to the network should be as close to the centre of the network as possible. Additionally the backbone does not need to be made up of directly connected T-connectors. Cable can be run between connectors thus reducing the amount of cable running through the boat as a cluster of devices can be T'd at the console, and only one backbone cable run back to connect to a cluster of devices at the bow, stern etc.

Excellent, just what I was needing. Have 2 HDS Lives and a Ghost Trolling motor. In order to get full connectivity and benefits of all three I need Ethernet between the two HDSs and also NMEA connecting the Ghost and HDSs is that correct?

Great video! Here is my question about ethernet, can i connect my two 12 inch screens together since they have 2 ethernet plugs, and then go from there to nep2 hub to connect my two 7 inch screens and radar that only have 1 connection? The simrad nep2 hub only has 5 ethernets i think i need more.

Some MFD's require crossover cables for direct MFD communications. If going through a network switch/hub typically either can be used.

Hey Chris!...that’s actually not on my gimbal bracket (even though it looks like it...haha)...it’s mounted to my console behind my gimbal just using one of GoPros sticky mounts, and the arm is just one of their flex necks...I use that spot a lot when I’m on the trolling motor, gives good angles of the front of boat

Great channel. New subscriber. But and i did listen. If you have the nema2000 hooked up and it does show waypoints, trails, etc. between units. Why would you also run the ethernet cable? Just as backup or something? Also did the ghost come with gps sensor or is the point one just better? Thanks Pete. Been thinking of going with ghost. i have the Xi5 but the gps fails connected ( nmea2000 ) to HDS12. Needs that stupid dongel update that you cant get. So has to be disconnected from network. So just loose some features but thinking of switching.

@NitroZ18Fishing 3 года назад
Thanks Pete, I appreciate it!!…most people will run both systems just to take full advantage of everything they have to offer, but both are not necessarily needed…and yepper, the Ghost comes with its own puck, works a little differently than the Point 1…Point 1 is a heading sensor while the TMC (Ghost puck) is more of a GPS sensor…highly recommend using both of those on your setup as well…hope all that helps!

Hi one question, so I currently just bought One Lowrance HDS Live 16, that will be mounted on the dash where I drive the boat, and 2 HDS live 12s, which will be mounted at the Bow of the boat up front, so if I Buy 2 Lowrance Ethernet cables, Hook up both to my Lowrance HDS 16, both Ethernet cables up to the Bow of my boat, plug one of the cables into one of the Lowrance 12s, and then the other Ethernet cable into my other 12, They’ll all function together? So if I mark a waypoint on one of my 12s up front, they’ll all have that same waypoint marked on them? Great video it seems like it will be a great help to me when I go to install all this stuff

Hey Raze!… i’m sorry, I don’t know how I missed your comment… Yes you are correct, just run 2 ethernet cords from your 16 to the 2 12’s at the front and they will share any/all data that can be shared through ethernet…hope that helps!

Hey Patrick!… Yes sir, as long as they are all connected they will still share mapping and waypoints… It’s usually best to update to the latest software just to make sure you’re getting the most out of your units, but those features will still work if the 7 is not updated yet… Hope that helps!

@NitroZ18Fishing

Yes sir, Ethernet allows you to share transducer data between different graphs, as long as both graphs are connected of course…just run the ducer to one of the graphs, then connect the 2 graphs with an Ethernet cable, and you can share all data from the transducer (water temp, depth, waypoints, etc)…if it doesn’t work right off the bat let me know, there may be a couple settings you have to tweak (very easy to do, I’ll walk ya through it)

Patrick, great video and just in time for me! You just saved me several hundred dollars! I'm running three Elite-9 Ti2 units. I want to tie the two helm units together with an Ethernet cable, but I want to know if I can still link my "base unit" via WiFi to my bow unit while the base unit is linked via Ethernet to the second helm unit. Since these units only have one Ethernet port, I'd need an expansion port to hardwire all three together. But if I can still connect two units via Wifi, all I need is a short Ethernet cable and I'm in business! Currently, I have to reassign my WiFi connections every time I stop to fish, and every time I pick up to move. It is a PAIN!

Awesome video, The only question that I have is that on other videos that I have watched, they recommend putting the power cable close to the center point of the backbone. Does that really matter? I have (2) Lowrance HDS 9 gen 2 touch screens. Do you recommend running both the ethernet cable between the 2 units and also the NMEA setup. I am installing a Motorguide Xi5 pinpoint trolling motor and cleaning up a lot of the wiring at the same time. Thanks for the great video!

Thank you, I appreciate that!...and I’ve never had any issues with having the power “T” anywhere in the backbone, as long as circuit is terminated correctly you’ll be good to go!...I would definitely recommend doing both the Ethernet between both graphs, and also the NMEA 2K network, they both serve a good purpose on most boats, let me know if I can help with anything else, and thanks for watching!
