Ethiopia has begun generating power from Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
With the new source of electricity, Addis Ababa hopes to charge its economic development.
But the project is not sitting well, downstream.
It's has been a source of controversy from the time the first brick was layed a decade ago.
For Sudan and Egypt, the Nile River's waters are a lifeline for millions of their people.
Ehtiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed says there's nothing to worry about, and they should see the dam as an opportunity for all countries in the region.
So who stands to gain ... or lose?
Presenter: Sami Zeidan
Guests:
Adem Kassie Abebe, Program Officer at International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance.
Allam Ahmed, Professor of Knowledge Management and Sustainable Development at University of Sussex.
Alex de Waal, Executive Director, World Peace Foundation.

Absolutely ! One reason was the global geopolitical situation, with USA and the West at the top of the world. With Russia, China and India (perhaps also Africa) at the top, things would have been different. Recently passed former USA foreign minister Henry Kissinger, and perhaps the most influential US American politician in foreign policy said: Ethiopia must be destabilized by ethnicity, religion and any other divisive means. He said that perhaps in the 1960s or 1970s European calendar.

That's the problem with involving Western analysts. They always take sides. How on earth can Ethiopia stop the flow of Blue Nile which contributes over 80% of water that flows through Egypt. The colonial treaty shouldn't have been brought into discussions. Didn't Egypt dam the river themselves and we hear how they produce fruits for Europe. The Aswan provides tourist benefits for them. Right now they are building a new city with many water theme parks. Well done to Ethiopia it's time to let your nation prosper. Nothing will happen to the dam

Egypt the archenemy of Ethiopia is trying its best to propagate divisions and rancor between our people. This is not a concealed act, it is pronounced daily by Egyptian officials and at times even by president Al Sisi. They declare to “disrupt regional security” unless we accept their 1929 and 1956 treaties, sign a binding agreement to affirm Egypt and Sudan only can use the Blue Nile water. They also spend tens of billions dollars yearly buying arms, to scare and terrorize our country. At the same time they spend tens of millions of dollars to fund their Trojan horses to create havoc internally. There is undeniable evidence to this, the world has witnessed it and is watching all the atrocities on the ground. In addition, they persuade with bribes, terrorize our neighbors to collaborate with them and persuade them to conspire against Ethiopia. Lobbing countries, world financial institutions, block regional organizations is also part of their daily diplomatic evil mission. Egypt is blinded by hate and envy, denying cooperation and mutual beneficial use of our God given resources.

14:39 - This is the biggest takeaway from this segment. The issue is primarily trust and the fact that Egypt is uncomfortable with Ethiopia having any type of control over the river they deem significant. Let me make this clear. Egypt is not arguing about what is fair for Ethiopia to control, they are talking about their fear, mistrust, and security shortfalls in relation to Ethiopia. All of these things are not the issue of Ethiopia. All Ethiopia can do is reassure Egypt of its intentions with the GERD. If Egypt feels vulnerable or insecure about that, they should find alternative means of improving that security shortfall. This has nothing to do with fairness. Even if it did, we all know we don't live in a fair world anyway.

De Waal's claim that "...Ethiopia could block the Nile when it wants..." is an impossibility. The dam can hold as much water. Once it fills up, there is no earthly means to keep on adding more. The problem with Sudan and especially Egypt is wanting all the Nile water for themselves. They are trying to stop the unstoppable. They need to come to terms with the fact that Ethiopia, where much of the Nile flow originates will get its fair share come what may. Time has come!

Absolutely ! Ethiopia had so many geopolitical enemies, who was the enemy of the country also due to their ambitions and interests in the rest of Africa. Former colonial powers (Portugal, Britain, France, ...) fought Ethiopia because the role the country played in the decolonization of the African continent. The West's hatred against Ethiopia is in some ways similar to the West's hatred for Haiti, a country that was key or an inspiration in the decolonization of Latin America. Someone like Simon Bolivar was inspired by Haiti's victory against France in 1804 European calendar.

Egypt promised to act unilaterally to sabotage the dam once there is harm . Reply

That being said, it's fair to say Ethiopia 🇪🇹 should release water if drought happens during the filling stages of the GERD, however, 10 years in after the dam is completed and all turbines are turned on; the drought in Egypt will have nothing to do with the GERD. So may be these two cases should be dealt separately, just an opinion. Anyhow, congrats to Ethiopia 🇪🇹 on the successful generation of electricity 👍🏽

Sudan or Egypt never bothered to consult with Ethiopia, the country where over 65% of the Nile originates from, when each built or operates its own dam. Why the heck should Ethiopia need either country's supervision in building or operating the dam on its own soil built on its own dime?

Why is the West against development not only in Ethiopia but in Africa? Development means independence from the West. Now, the United States and Europe put a sanction against Ethiopia because Ethiopians started producing electricity.

I think Egypt and or Sudan should offer 2 billion dollars each to help not only pay for the GERD project but to help help further develop the area like more spillways during typhoon seasons and thousands of water towers for all three countries for plumbing and running water for these houses not just electricity. They could and should have Insurance, Security and wild life programs that could deliver by pipe water to wild life natural water holes to fill only during times of drought including crucial migration routes.. A secondary watering system for farming should be built as well. All Governments involved should also help develop upstream to ensure no contamination of the water esp industrial waste or sabotage. Bottom line they should offer to compliment the project to compliment the Nile and its people.

It's all about personal interests, why should Sudan offer $2B if it's not getting anything in return? that is stupid. Sudan can offer $2B as long as it gets a percentage from the dam for electricity just like Kenya has.
@ad-jv8bz
@ad-jv8bz 2 года назад
@@giragod9373 Of course the 2B is not for nothing. And it's not just for electricity either. It's for a water % guarantee through a water pipeline preferably underground yet either way will require construction cost and maintenance. This also means they would eventually have to input more than $2B for future projects, which is a good thing. Stupid is stupid does!

🇪🇹 May God bless the good people of Ethiopia. And may God bless and protect the "Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam". that the good people of Ethiopia worked so hard to build. I also have not forgotten about, and give thanks to "Simegnew Bekele," the first project manager and chief engineer for the "Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam." He was killed on July 26, 2018 he was only 53 years old. When I first heard about the Renaissance Dam being built Simegnew Bekele was also the spokesperson for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, and a very Brilliant black man. It is my prayer that God will continue to bless Simegnew Bekele wife and kids In the years to come. 🌻🌷🌿 🇪🇹🇪🇹🇪🇹🇪🇹🇪🇹🇪🇹🇪🇹🇪🇹🇪🇹

Very true. Rename Egypt Misri not the Arab republic of Egypt. The addition of the term is an indication of someone trying to steal the originality and identify of the great African country. We know why they messed up with the noses of the mummies. Trying to make Egypt like a European nation when we know the Greeks, Phoenicians, Assyrians, Romans, Moabites, Europeans started to come to Misri in 632 -622 B.C. The likes of Archimedes, Socrates, Aristotle all schooled in Misri and pirated alot of literature they later used to write books.

Egypt was invited to Uganda for all Nile basin countries to discuss the water supply and resource engineering of the river Nile but they refused to come attend the meeting citing the agreement they had with Britain in 1901, 1929 and 1959. All the other countries on the basin showed up. These countries took the position that since Egypt was talking of her agreement with Britain then it should collect her water from Britain. Egypt has also consistently refused to help with the afforestation of the Nile basin from the lake Victoria and lake Tana regions. It has been arrogant and does not want to chip in at all. The water that is received is formed from relief rains due to evapotranspiration from the forests in the Highlands of both arms of the East Afrikan valley. Soon we shall be expanding the Jinja H.E.P station at the source of the white river Nile(Uganda) to supply cheap electricity to the owners of the lake Victoria and the white river Nile(Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi, DR. Congo, Kenya, South Sudan and Sudan). My Afrikan brothers in Egypt needs to let their ego down and come talk to us nicely. The rain water was given by God to east Afrikans. Egypt gets only the spill off if it behaves. "Tuko pamoja milele daima."

What about Ethiopia leaving the US in the middle of the negotiations, what about Egypt building the cairo-cape town road, what about developing the rail road for Sudan and building a dam in Tanzania. Lately African nations are acting if Egypt is the root of all evil and it wishes the destruction of other African nations. Which is the reasoning of a child. As an Egyptian I don't find it beneficiary If nations around us are not stable. This raises concern and increases the instability in the region. And please don't use the racial discrimination card or the colonialism card because Egypt suffered from both and we're trying to recover as everyone is. Just bare in mind what's at stack here, the water source more than 100 million people depend on and has no quick alternative to replace. Egypt never said it doesn't want the GERD to be completed. All we asked for are longer filling periods to mitigate the loses. I'll tell you what's going on, leaders try to make create a huge enemy to validate their plans and authority. Aiby benefits from the Ethiopian people thinking Egypt is trying to kill them more than he'll benefit from the GERD and vice versa :D

@@grgmgd USA has no authority to discuss African water issues. Infact if you know the geography of California and study the San Joaquin and Bernardino valleys in Sacramento, then you will find out that to move the water from one part of California the receiver/consumer pays for water usage. Egypt has been using the Nile water with zero investment. I ask you to talk to your to come upstream and help with planting trees so that we have an efficient and large watershed. No beef at all but please come and help with the afforestation program. "Tuko pamoja milele daima ndugu yangu."

I really don't understand how Ethiopia can stop the flow of such a huge river. Did I miss something? What kind of dam can stop the Nile river? This is absurd! And if there is no such thing as stopping of the Nile, there is in reality no real issue with the dam other than a spoiled kid, Egypt. Forget Sudan, it has recently become a mouthpiece of Egypt while hurting its own interests.
