My dad is a hardcore rock and roll from the 60s. And he was smart enough to turn me on to her back in the mid-seventies when I was growing up. He he was smart enough to appreciate the good blues when he heard it thank God.
It's crazy how she can sing in a live performance sounding exactly the way she sounds on her recorded songs, that's true talent unlike a lot of singers nowadays that sound nothing like their recordings when they give live performances. A lot of true talent back in the 50's, 60's and 70's.
She said look y’all, ‘I’m gonna put on my Sunday best wig, throw on my Thursday night bingo sweater, make sure this eyeliner is on point, and we going to go do this here concert now y’all hear me’. Etta didn’t play 👏🏾🤣
She's also one of the Black singers Janice Joplin blatantly STOLE from - like so many white singers/musicians in the 50-70s did. Never giving the Black folks they stole from and tried hard to imitate...
Her sound comes from the black church, that's what I heard as a young boy when my moma made me take my brothers and sisters to church in the Filmore district where I grew up
Cameron - TheSinger the remarkable thing is how she can switch back and forth between the nastiest rasp and sweet, clean notes at will. Then throw in some delightful scat...
Tons of people have heard the intro to this song sampled by Pretty Lights, Avicii, and Flo Rida, many probably just dont know who it was they were hearing but the art living on is more important than the recognition anyway.
I’ve never heard the live version until now. My goodness. True talent and not like today where people are afraid to be themselves. This is passion. Whatever came naturally, she did.
Hell she just screams and makes noises throughout most of the song... -_- At last. Now THAT song shows her vocals. I love Etta but this song was trash.
You know after going through a lot of the comments, I felt the need to add my 2 cents. For anyone making unsavory comments about the great Etta James, I honestly feel sorry for you that the Lord hasnt blessed you with the capability to enjoy great music. So here's my prediction. 50 years from today (and that's 2021 by the way), Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, Gladys Knight etc will all be remembered, honored and cherished. How many names from today's generation will survive the test of time. I dont know. Unlike a lot of people, Etta James could simply walk onto a stage, start singing and blow the audience away without a second of preparation. One of a kind. Diva and goddess. We love you and will always cherish you.
This song was getting played inside a car in Taiwan while the 7.4 earthquake hit Taiwan...crazy...Taiwan folks listen to this music...I've never heard this song before until Fox News showed earthquake footage and I Googled the background music coming from inside the car at the earthquake scene....I love Motown!!
The Taiwanese Boulders brought me here as well 😅 I thought the happy upbeat music while the apocalypse is unfolding around you was just a movie cliche, but apparently Hollywood was right on the money.
I love her platinum, leopard print, & cat eyes- it’s so 60’s! She’s gorgeously belting her blessin’- HAaLllāUuujAh! From super velvet soft to praising Jesus in a church- she’s got control of her volume for sure!
and playing in her thick knit cardigan as a natural asset - so much in contrast to today' artists who basically perform in sequinned cutouts to add ..missing sparkle to their performances? she's a natural..
imagine being the guy in the Sun records studio and recording her for the first time. Having no idea of what to expect and then getting your face blown off from that thunderous and passionate sound! Some singers simply set the standard.
I do not know where you found this information. However, Etta James did not records at Sun Studio, she was discovered by Johnny Otis and her first recording "Good Rockin' Daddy" was issued via a California label, Modern Records, in 1955 before eventually signing to Chess in 1960.
@@rearly62 phew! i thought i was going to get away with making a mistake. Just general conversation until you came along with the casual insult and insight to my failure. Enjoy life and stop the trolling! I meant Chess. Just wasnt worth going back.
@@paulflynn2481Trolling - (verb), as it relates to internet, is the deliberate act, (by a Troll - noun or adjective), of making random unsolicited and/or controversial comments on various internet forums with the intent to provoke an emotional knee jerk reaction from unsuspecting readers to engage in a fight or argument. The way I see it, I stated my case while providing relevant context and dates - that is not trolling. You could have simply said, "My bad", or, "I believe she did record at Sun Studio". However, you decided to attempt to belittle my response with passive aggressive insults. Seems to me you decided to come back after all. Maybe take a chill pill or have a nice cup of tea?
0:49 And here is were Etta waits for the music to come in for her to start the actual song but it doesn't, so to quickly improvise she starts doing what we as regular people call. Improsinging. 0:58 Etta quickly glances to the side as if to say "bro when tf is tha music gonna come in? I be makin myself look stupid" and then realises her mistake so she turns back to the audience and keeps singing 1:12 and this is when Etta is self-reflecting on why she chose to sing this live instead of just showing the audience the studio version, where no one can see or hear if she decided to whoop someones ass cause they fucked up the timing of the music. Ya'know, since with the studio version you can cut parts out. 1:35 after singing the same part over and over again, Etta is about to lose all hope until she finally hears some kind of musical instrument and she perks up, starting to sing that same line for the 3rd time now in hope that the people playing the instruments will get the hint and actually start playing. 1:41 and at this precise moment Etta decides to say "fuck it" and starts singing the song fully now. Taking a leap of faith and hoping that the band will start playing with her to which they do. 1:43 Etta puts her head down for a split second. As if she's saying "thank you Jesus in heaven for finally making these idiots play the music" and then gets on with the song. Planning on how she's gonna whoop some ass after this performance.
Greatest voice of all time. No one else comes close. Effortless ability. Smooth to Guttural. High to Low. Fast to Slow. Loud to Hushed. Raspy to Mellow. She convinces me that she’s singing to only me like no other singer ever has. She only had to open her mouth and the restless angel inside her did the rest.Thank you Etta for sharing yourself with the world! Nothing brings a smile to my face like Etta James.
Now I know why Christina Aguilera loves Etta James so much! She even sang At Last at her funeral. I can actually hear a lot of Etta in Christina’s voice.
Shut the back door...!!! this is sugar for the soul.... 😍 everyone should listen to this track in the morning to get one's self bossing the day..AND I MEAN EVERYONE...
@@unclebob2792 My comment was not about competition; I was stating a historical fact. Etta James was the 1st person given the title of "Queen of Soul' - deal with it. It is very clear to hear that Aretha Franklin took a bit from the Etta James playbook.
Etta Covers All the Voice Range, Ranges. But more importantly her abilities to have control over these Range and Ranges. That in itself is a Rare Special Gifted Talent. There are only Very Small Handful of Special Females Singer who Possess these Special Qualities that can’t be compared to!!!
Lol people dislike videos all the time. Just recently I had a guy saying he has a compulsive urge of having to give a thumbs down even tho he likes what he is watching 🤷🏻♀️
I have nothing but love, respect and admiration for women like Etta James & Tina Turner. These 2 women were Great examples of alternative black women. I mean... Alternative black women have been around since the beginning of time but I'm just saying... Blues, Rock N Roll, Rock etc. Are many genres heard in this woman's voice and performance. Thank you Etta James & Tina Turner for showing me to be brutally truthful about being unapologetically black.
Now that’s a voice that stirs passions. Simultaneously brimming with the sincere rebellion of youth and musicality; by itself a cultural monument at the dawn of rock music and R&B. Amun!
I'm an big Avicii fan since 2017... he brought me here (Levels, the greatest since ............ )... , of course I knew the original song, BUT I still didnt realise the magnitude of this song, until I watched/lisened to this video: Thankyou so much for sharing!

She is in no way Chinese her father was Minnesota fats Rudolph wanderone Jr also known as Minnesota Fats was her father they met in the late fifties and he wouldn't accept her just tried to give her money he hurt her heart she was more talented than his little finger

According to her book, she originally wrote this as a gospel-type song. The song took on a different flavor once it was released and she went with the flow.
