Etuaptmumk - Two-Eyed Seeing is explained by saying it refers to learning to see from one eye with the strengths of Indigenous knowledges and ways of knowing, and from the other eye with the strengths of Western knowledges and ways of knowing ... and learning to use both these eyes together, for the benefit of all.
Spoken word artist, current Halifax Slam Master and recently appointed Poet Laureate for the Halifax Regional Municipality, Rebecca Thomas also holds the position of Coordinator of Aboriginal Student Services at the Nova Scotia Community College. Coming from an indigenous background whose family has been greatly impacted by residential schools, Ms. Thomas has come to recognize the lack of prominence given to First Nations perspectives within the history of Halifax. As a Mi’kmaw woman, she embraces the opportunity to bring her cultural voice to the broader public discussion through the Poet Laureate position, and believes that the arts and poetry can help people heal in ways beyond traditional therapies. “Poetry can give a voice to the voiceless. Poetry can make a powerless person feel powerful. This is why I speak,” said Ms. Thomas.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Your poem is extremely well written and has touched my heart! I too am indigenous and have grown up off reserve, and am also trying to reconnect with my Mi'gmag culture. I have chosen Etuaptmumk as the topic of my essay for university because of how much it has resonated with me. Thank you for doing what you do Rebecca!

I am going to reflect on a interesting layer,, as a person labeled with Asperger's syndrome ,, I see the world through and reflect expression through an entirely different set of expression structures , at times this whole Nero typical world feels "alien" to me, I am not native don't claim any roots there , but the world "feel" within the indigenous, community , does not have that strange out of sync structural expression "feeling" , having ones own people "shun" one of there own to me is like a form of mind colonization on a sublime level , I must always run in "expression translation mode" when I try and interact , I can do this but the layers of effort it takes to do so require a huge amount of focus and effort , to be able to work within this systems frame of expression..

@@sitkadear4535 One of the deepest core challenges I have in trying to mesh in are the the internal "Duality" thought and expression strutures that are interwoven into the English language. these polerized expraession layers are interworven into the core european religious instutions of idology and instutions of so called powwr , the way they "feel" for lack of any better words to describe them is , The world reaaly does not work that way ,, why in the world must I suscribe to thiose expressions or ways of thinking ?? ,, So I don't

I doubt I will get a reply. But, I have a question that you pointed out in your talk.. If a language has concepts and so much depth to meanings. Is it possible that in history and the past and you mentioned that its been 5 centuries. How much is lost in translation and the inability to communicate with complete understanding has led us to where we are today? If its impossible or nearly impossible or even difficult to translate into English/French an Indigenous language, will mistakes and in fact many not get made? I was not alive back in 1800's but can many of the issues that have existed and still exist be understood in the context of a language barrier? Something was said that had a meaning but was not full understood. This not an excuse for any of it , but a way to better understand and produce a better context for everyone to realize how we got to where we are and maybe provide a path for a better understanding of how to approach solutions. Indigenous and non need to somehow work together better to fix what is broken and it may be thru a better understanding of Indigenous languages that provides solutions.
