THIS VIDEO: In this video I will focus on photographer Eugene Richards and his work. His life and work highlights what is essential in any artform - a commitment to an idea and the ability to convey the reality of the what he sees. Through his 45 years of working as a photojournalist, Richards has remained a humanist and through his lyrical images he has continued to advocate for others. his work has been published in magazines like Life and National Geographic.
ABOUT ME: The conversations focus on topics related to different aspects of photography including: art, documentary and photojournalism. The discussions explore the personal experiences of photographers and artists and how their work reflects both their internal and external landscape. During the past 30 years I have photographed in over 50 countries for magazines including National Geographic, Time, New York Times and Newsweek. I have held solo exhibitions in New York, London and Paris and my work is showcased in private and institutional art collections around the world.
COPYRIGHT: Eugene Richards' owns the copyright to all of his images.

It seems as thouogh every comment i leave begins with "thank you." This time is no different. I deeply appreciate your tendency to not easily join or collaborate with our social tendency to monetize rather than tell a story. Your firm commitment to the deeper human story, which is often highlighted in the photographers you choose to share, makes us all more aware of the common life we share. Eugene Richards work shatters the pretense that all is well with a message, "this is life,"

Ah yes: '...pictures being published... less of the moment, more often set up, in collaboration with the subjects.' mr Richards sure hit the bullseye with that one.

Richards is one of the great ones. Definitely. VERY few like him. Even being fully aware of Eugene Smith's amazing work, I'd say that Richards is about the Best of the Best. I Love that you included his comments about the state of affairs in the art world, with "collaborative" being the new Thing to be watering down creativity. So glad he speaks out about it.

Brilliant work...thanks you for introducing him to me. That shot of the sparkly red shoes seems so simple but so much going on there.

I had a copy of the Knife & Gun club but gave it to a lady whose daughter was interning at that Denver hospital. Pretty shocking book as I recall. Great video you did here.

Excellent video, Graeme. I admire Richards greatly but I think he did himself no favours… the ‘demise of photojournalism’ began in the 60s as people turned to TV for news. The internet has disrupted the business model of all news publications… leading to massive lay-offs of editorial staff and photographers. I’m glad you have gone into bat for Richards. You have sent me back to the 3 books of his on my shelves. But his obsessions and his approach are now very old-fashioned. I am tempted to say he developed tunnel vision: these images … stunning in themselves… have themselves become clichéd, predictable… Many photographers have the rather abrasive attitude he displays. I wish him well, with all my heart. But if I want to contemplate the grim realities of modern America I will go back to my box set of The Wire.

Hi Rostyk I hope that it isn't too cold for you in Ottawa - I am surviving the heat with blasting aircon. Thanks Graeme

@@PhotoConversations Oh... I would rather take cold weather rather than heat and humidity (July in Ontario can be brutal). Here in Canada we have a category of people (mostly retired:) whom we call "snowbirds". During winter months they move to Florida and return to Canada in spring. I believe that with changing climate soon we will see people fleeing extreme heat and going north :) Even though I am originally from Ukraine I do enjoy Canadian winter very much. Especially I love to photograph during late fall, during snowy winter. This season provides very minimalistic, so to speak, environment. It's just snow, bare trees and overcast skies filter sunshine in very specific way. It's something similar to what I experienced in India - smog in big cities and humid air in the countryside filter sun light like a giant soft box. Light has a very unique quality in these conditions.

@@RostykMakushak Hi I'm with you on the cold weather vs heat. On a really bad day it can go up to 116F and our eyeballs feel like they are boiling. The only way to achieve minimalism here is to find a stretch of water and the soft light that you describe is as rare as unicorns. Sadly your favorite season is coming to an end. Viva Ukraine!

Brilliant video, again! I have three of Richard's books (Stepping through the Ashes, The Fat Baby and Cocaine true Cocaine). And I have always marveled at his ability to win people's trust and move in so closely. I had not though about why there were no new stories coming out from him and attributed it to his age. I had no idea that photo editors had begun giving assignments to "matching" ethnicities/sexual orientations etc. Do you think that these new ideas in picture editors' heads have also contibuted to National Geographic not doing the good old land and people reportages anymore - the ones that David Alan Harvey, the Turnleys or William Albert Allard did). I have always though it was about the lack of ads and finances in these magazines that would not allow editors to send out photographers on a three-month trip all expenses covered to "show the soul of France" in 15 images.

Hi Frank, Sadly all of these old sources of great photography have fallen victim to the commandments of the new religion.

@@PhotoConversations My examples of photographers I liked a lot were all "old white men", however, I also really cherish Margarete Bourke-White, Barbara Klemm (not known enough outside Germany. Please do google her. She was staff photographer for the FAZ newspaper in the 70s/80s and 90s) Not all religions are the same in terms of their capability of producing great art and artists. Christianity (especially the Catholics) was quite gifted in picking excellent artists for their visual PR (quite tolerant of some "quirks" of the chosen artists) The new woke religion could do better in terms of picking artists to further their ideology.
