Hagler used to isolate himself at the very tip of Cape Cod (near his hometown Brockton, Massachusetts) in a remote beach hotel. He would wake up at 3 AM every morning and do sprints on the beach at Cape Cod in heavy combat boots- half of it running backwards. Sprints are a great way to build up your endurance and body. Sprinters maximally contract their muscles, which requires a lot more work than a slow, staggered, constant run. Not to mention, your testosterone and hormones are released in greater amounts with short maximal energy bursts. During the winter, it was said to be one of the coldest places on Earth due to the heavy wind. Marvin would actually be screaming due to the pain of the cold and the pain in his legs and lungs. Then he went into "solitary" till six in the evening. At six, he went to the gym they'd set up alongside the pool at a hotel nearby. Your body tends to burn even more calories in the cold, as your energy expenditure increases. Therefore, this could be part of the reason why Hagler was extremely lean. There, they would perform a circuit of jumping rope, heavybag, speedbag, and situps (where they'd do several rounds each), but one strict rule was adhered to: three minutes work, one minute rest, for all of it. This mimics that of a typical boxing match and will get Hagler ready for his matches. After that they would do their sparring routine. Marvin had to have several sparring partners in camp with him because he used them up with such regularity. "Marvin don't ease up on you," said longtime sparring partner and world champion Buster Drayton. There's no play when it comes to Marvelous Marvin; "he comes to work". This is another great way to get him ready for his matches. Marvin would spar with three to four sparring partners, where he went two rounds each before moving on to the next fresh partner. This dramatically improved his conditioning and taught him to remain in great position even while he was tired. Drayton also said that his sparring partners would leave the ring with the insides of their mouths so chewed up from Hagler's blows that they couldn't even eat dinner that night. After that, he would rest, eat, and watch film of himself and his opponents. The workouts were open to the public, so he'd remove his gear, toss a nod to the audience, and return to the self-imposed solitary confinement. Those working with him in camp have said that he wouldn't even socialize, because he wanted to remain so focused on his goals. He stayed in his room, and could be seen frequently sitting alone on his balcony staring out at the Cape water for long periods at a time. Marvin made sure that he worked out 7 days a week and got atleast 100 rounds of sparring in every week, but most importantly, he was always fast asleep by 8 PM to get his 7 hours before his 3 AM run. "So many of the greats were just wild, wild people...but then there were some greats that were just real disciplined. MARVIN HAGLER is my best example for that. When I was a kid growing up in Boston, Hagler was the middleweight champion of the world, and they used to show him on the news, he'd be running on the sand dunes of Cape Cod in the winter, in the freezing cold with a hoodie on, screaming "War! WAR!" It was amazing. Marvin Hagler made you just want to get out of your house and go running in the snow. That's what I always got out of him, not that he was so wild; he was so mentally strong, he had an iron chin, and his discipline was impeccable." --Joe Rogan on boxer Marvin Hagler
Yes he did ...no outside distractions .... As a brit I feel ashamed he didn't get to hold his belt up in the ring against minter...that was a stain on us ...they fucking pelted him with bottles in the ring ....what a fucking travesty . Minter was a fucking racist and he got took apart ...he wasn't on the same level as hagler . We love hagler in England so what happened in that minter fight is not representative of how we were as fans ....it's just that we had an hooligism culture at the time and it was shameful
Absolutely. Leonard admitted he didn't want any parts of Hagler during Leonard's reign as welterweight champion. "He's too strong." Leonard wasn't thinking about Hagler until he saw the Mugabi fight and assumed that Hagler had eroded enough that he might have a chance. That's why he demanded the bigger ring, so he could run and steal rounds. Even so, Hagler still beat him. At the end of the HBO airing of the fight, when Hagler and Leonard embraced in the middle of the ring, you can clearly hear Leonard say, "You beat me." R.I.P champ. The best middleweight ever, and one of the best fighters I've ever seen.
Hands down the greatest middleweight and southpaw, He was the definition of "WAR" every fight was a instant classic because of his I will destroy you mentality. Simply the best
God doesn't die. Labeling any human as a God IS STUPID! Turn to Jesus before the day of God's wrath people! NO mortal can escape the wrath of God. TURN TO JESUS to level up before its too late. Billions for Russian oil! TO TRY TO GET PEOPLE'S EYEYS FROM THEIR Lawless tyranny and destruction! Bidens doesn't care about them if he did he would stup importing oil from Russia! HE WOULD USE OUR GOD GIVEN RESOURCE'S! Rather then punishing working familiar! You hypocrite leftist are funding Putin! immoral platforms MSM.... using war to boost back up and try to change subject. GOD HAS NOT FORGOTTEN THEIR WAR AGAIN ST TRUTH, AMERICANS and all who rejected their propaganda. He will not allow thecabal of liars, thieves and bullies. To distract and hide from their crimes. Sin and punishment are like the body and the shadow, never very far apart. Who sin for their profit will not profit by their sin; you may see nothing but well in its commission, you will see nothing but woe in its conclusion. The law of retribution is as fixed as the law of gravitation. There is a connecting string between ourselves and our misdeeds. We tie ourselves by an invisible and enduring thread to every evil deed we do. There is an Australian missile called the boomerang, which is thrown so as to describe singular curves, and falls again at the feet of the thrower. Sin is that boomerang, which goes off into space, but turns again upon its author, and, with tenfold force, strikes him who launched it. This is why Jesus says to repent and preach! GOD IS MERCIFUL. This why Jesus said forgive and pray for others! Lord have mercy. DO NOT ALLOW THIS STATION FULL OF LYING IMMORAL PEOPLE TO manipulate anymore!
Loved Marvelous Marvin Hagler! He fought everyone and beat everyone too! In this era, the middleweight division was highly competitive with some of the greatest boxers of all time. Marvin trained very hard and backed everything up in the ring. He was an outstanding fighter and a gentleman too. RIP
I had the good fortune to meet Marvin about 9 years ago. I was in a cool little restaurant slash bar that a girlfriend of mine ran in aruba. I was sitting at the bar I noticed what looked like Marvin sitting with a woman about 15 feet away from me. My father had taken me to maple leaf gardens to watch Marvin fight sugar it was televised on the big screen at the gardens. Marvin was wearing a tee shirt that said boxing is in my blood. A American look guy walked by me and I stopped him and asked him if he looked like Hagler.he agreed with me and that was enough for me to walk over to Marvin's table and ask him if he was marvelous. He said he was and I told him that I went to that fight with my dad and he asked me to sit down with his wife. He was so humble and so nice I couldn't belive it. We talked for about 10 minutes and it was my 3rd trip to aruba in 3 months and I suggested a great place to eat and he was just amazing to sit down with. He let me take a photo of the two of us and he also let me look and examine his hands omg his hands were insane. I'd also say he was weighing in around I'd say 210 or 220 about my size. At first that was what was hard to recognize him. But it was him and he was in shape he was just a heavy weight when I met him. Rip champ you were so nice to me I'll never forget your heart.
I really appreciate this documentary. Hagler is my all time favorite fighter across all combat sports. He is the greatest middleweight boxer who ever lived. You did him justice with this. Thank you.
@@ballo3595 Roy is a great fighter definitely Hall of Fame worthy. However, a lot of his style depended on athleticism. I would even go so far as too say he might have been the most athletic fighter ever. But, when his athleticism (reflexes) started to go he started getting touched up and knocked out. He could only fight one way and it showed. Most people only focus on how strong and tough Hagler was but he was a extremely underrated boxer. He was a better, more adaptable and more durable boxer than Roy in my opinion. I say this because Hagler was dominant all the way up to the day he retired (some people still believe he beat Leonard). When you factor in Hagler's chin it becomes obvious. Roy was so incredibly athletic that he could exist outside the realities of boxing fundamentals. That never lasts. A lot of people will disagree with me. But, if you talk to them long enough you will see that they are confusing athleticism with skill. Roy was great, but too many K.O. losses to put him on Hagler's level.
@@shriharihudli That is a real tough one because I actually consider them both complete fighters. They both did everything well and had iron chins. I think Sugar Ray was probably a bit faster and maybe more athletic, but I think Hagler was technically better and physically stronger. I just don't know, but if pressed, I'm going with Hagler. He wa a natural middleweight (I believe Ray started at 140) and he could seamlessly switch from orthodox to southpaw. I don't know everyone on Robinson's resume, but I don't know anyone that was like Hagler. And it's not like Robinson didn't have losses. He was incredible. But, we'll never know.
Boxers have it easy these days.. So many different world titles to go for so they can call themselves a champion. Imagine being a contender back then and having to face Marvin Haglar !!
Hagler’s 2nd loss was legit. Willie “the Worm” Monroe was a very slick fighter that was very difficult to track down, as his nickname. But the fight was close, and Willie was honorable enough to give him a rematch. And Hagler took the experience and stopped him in the rematch.
Love Hagler...and everything he embodied as a man and a fighter. Todays middleweights or fighters amongst all weight classes should watch this and be ashamed. RIP legend
You should've spoke at his funeral Hagler is easily top 10 of all time I see you're a true student of the game and you appreciate the art in it's purest form much respect to you keep being great
Legend. When your work ethic and determination stands out in a sport that includes legends Ali, Marciano, and Pacquiao (just to name a few), you've done everything the right way and then some. Edit: Why does every boxing thread acknowledging someone's greatness turn into an argument about Mayweather? I had Mayweather in mind, I just didn't say him by name. I also had Sugar Ray Robinson, Jack Dempsey, Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield, etc in mind, if that makes ya feel better
His head movement is very underrated when they speak about him, like if you can SRL a guy with some of the fastest hands miss so many punches then you must have the fastest reflexes ever
Marvin Hagler vs Sugar Ray Leonard was the most iconic fight of all time to me as a kid. It was the epic speed vs power and to this day leaves a changing split decision every time I watch it as an adult with more boxing knowledge. Thank you Hagler for giving me that memory.
I lived in Boston during Hagler's heyday. Saw the Hearns fight on closed circuit tv in a hotel I think either in Stoughton or Braintree. One of my life's thrills. But my biggest thrill was meeting Marvin during one of his workouts in Provincetown before the Duran fight.
@@lucyfuir6386 Marvin's the best I ever saw. I was a young boy watching one of his fights, it was outdoors I guess, in the cold, and when he sat down in the corner after the round his bald head was _smoking_ with the steam coming off of it. He looked calm and collected, of course. I knew right then as a 6 or 7 year old, he was gonna win easy. He looked peaceful and noble on the stool, after the fury of the round, and his head wore that crown of mist, like a king. Best I ever saw.
Just last week I was thinking, "Rhythm Boxing NEEDS to do a video on Marvelous Marvin Hagler". A week later, I got my wish. For me, the Marvelous left us sooner than we would've expected, but not before seeing the best of him in the ring and in life. May the Marvelous Rest In Peace, for all of eternity.
I was little more than a baby when Marvelous Marvin came to England and beat Alan Minter. I continued watching his fights as I grew up (The Beast Mugabe and Hearns were my favourites). I joined a Gym and fought at middleweight. Naturally an Orthodox fighter, I asked to learn (from the very beginning) to fight South Paw, like Marvelous Marvin. I never lost (did not have that many fights, thanks to a 'crook' of a Manager) and am greatful to have been born in an era where fighters and champions fought and not just talked about it. He inspired me to learn to box and become good at it. Marvelous Marvin Hagler the best there ever was and my motivation. RIP
One of the best fighters to have ever lived. Could outbox, out-fight and out-think anybody put in front of him. Thought he was screwed out of the Leonard decision, Sugar Ray stole the last 30 seconds of the rounds to catch the judges eyes. Shame Marvin bowed out like that. A classic era for middleweight boxing. Thanks for the upload. Peace and Love
I lost money on that fight. Ray's a good fighter but I thought the same thing he did get screwed. But as good as Ray was, he didn't want a rematch. Hagler would have try to kill him the next go round.
Absolutely OUTSTANDING video! The content in this one sent chills down my spine and made me shed a tear. Great work Rhythm Boxing!!!!! RIP CHAMP!!!!!!!
Marvelous Marvin Hagller was an absolute professional. The Power, speed and intelligence of his craft was above so many. KO ability in BOTH hands, ohh the joy. Watching this beast of a fighter was a blessing, so brave and a chin of Titanium. RIP LEGEND 🥊❤🥊🐐
Another classic. I love the line about Hearns life changing right hand. Those Brockton boys had the hardest chins in boxing history. May they both rest in peace.
Thank you for this, well done and befitting the legend that is Marvelous Marvin Hagler, my favorite fighter with an all-time chin an iron will and sublime skill, RIP Champ, you were everything a fighter should be.
Marvelous has always been my favorite, got screwed a few times and didn’t have the hype so he took the long hard road. Humanity will miss Mr. Hagler, an old school stoic man and a beacon of grit, hard work, dedication, sacrifice, and concentration.
@@mikeyboy8127 You certainly never left yr eyes off the TV for a second, Really liked Ray Leonard controversial result when he beat,,,, use that word lightly,,,, Marvin but ray got the decision. Marvin was something else he usually found a way to finish the opposition but got to respect Ray for stepping up, its history now but look were still talking about these legends of wich we will never see the likes of again unfortunately.
Thank you for making this video. I consider myself lucky I witnessed those fights. I live in Boston at Marvin's heyday he was a champ Champs never cheated the fans. Saw his great fights and he certainly beat all of them up. I'm glad he retired with his memory in tack. Oh yeah he beat Sugar Ray BTW.
Wonder where he would have gone if he had been given the decision he deserved against Leonard. If he would have fought McCallum or Herol Graham, or given Hearns a rematch. We'll never know, because the judges thought a dozen pitty pat punches at the end of each round were more impressive than Hagler's steady work.
And Sugar Ray didn’t want the 2nd fight because he knew Marvin would knock him out cold to prove that he was playing with him in the first fight! Leonard didn’t want that real smoke!
@@johnjamele I think he would’ve retired anyway; the bad decision from the Leonard fight only sped it up. There was also no public demand for a fight with McCallum or Graham. Hagler even said it himself that he had enough of boxing but he had to take care of Mugabi because the public wanted it. Of course the Leonard fight was also there, but don’t 4get, Leonard was retired. The intrigue grew more and the showdown became even bigger after Hagler beat Mugabi, the big bad wolf; and that fight with “the beast” was brutal; way more brutal that his fight with Hearns. I think Hagler is one of the most loved boxer in history of the sport. There are more loved ones, but Hagler is right up there, somewhere at the top.
@@FR4NKY666 Rounds ended after a knockdown trip or throw (which was legal back then) and guys got 30 seconds to "Come to scratch" and begin the next round. Fights could go on all day. Usually started around noon and on occasion bouts were called a draw if darkness set in before there was a winner.
@@comewatchfights9112 I rather get hit there than have brain damage and I have not been kicked in the liver but I know the pain I got liver pain by accident but not by kick
Growing up in Brocton, don't think you could find a better man to represent the city. Wasn't a showboat or bigmouth, he just went to work and never backed down. I can guarantee he held the respect of all his peers. Favorite fighter ive ever seen and feel lucky to watch him fight as i grew up. R.I.P Marvelous One, a true legend...
I live 20 mins from Brockton n I can tell you him n rocky marciano still have a huge impact on the area RIP marvelous marvin haggler n RIP rocky marciano
I grew up in Brockton, in the next neighborhood over from where Marvin lived in during the mid eighties. I went to school with his son for a short time before they moved again. He often jogged by my house and we saw him regularly. Great guy. R.I.P. MARVELOUS ONE
Some boxers were so ahead of their time that they could still be champ or at least contenders today and Marvin is definitely one of the all-time greats that could be top 3 if not champ today.
I think you’re excessively aggrandising the present .. yes skills improve with time but in sports that were already extremely professionalised by the 20s and where arguably there has been a decline in number of participants in recent years because of the dangers there is no reason to think that an mw from the 80s wouldn’t beat one from now with current training regimen …. May be different for hw s as there is a real size difference that may have changed the playing field but not for mw s …. The past had great geniuses too
My favorite boxer hands down. I stopped watching when he lost to Sugar😡 He was from Mass 25 miles away. Watched him every chance I got. Like this film. Thanks for bringing this and me back💯
Marvin was always robbed, he win that fight against Leonard or minimum it was a draw and the history will probably have a second fight, as the champion he de rave that, Leonard flurries at the end of the rounds give an impression to the judges but a lot didn’t connect. One of the goats and an incredible fighter, no one look like the Marvelous then and now.
through out my teen years my cousins and i would always argue as to who was gonna to be The marvelous Marvin Hagler during his fights. Thank you Marvelous one for the great memories. you taught me a lot about work ethics and dedication.
This man is the reason i followed boxing. Marvin by far was the most relatable fighter of all time. He fought with pure heart and anger. No fighter today would want to be in the ring with him, none. Straight warrior
As a brit I agree ...it was shameful . We had a problem with hooligism at the time and it was them dickheads that ruined for hagler ....I watched it the time with my dad and it was so embarrassing
The narration writing for these videos reminds me of the fighters it covers; solid, consistent workmanship with moments of blinding, and occasionally unorthodox, brilliance.
I was a kid when he fought but I love him and still curse the fact Sugar Ray was handed the victory due to essentially hoodwinking judges with the flurries
