Strike detection is high on the priority list when nymph fishing, and we often use in-line indicators to help us detect takes. There are many indicator styles they are relatively cheap and can make a huge difference to your catch rate when river fishing. The choice of river fishing indicators used in conjunction with French leaders or even just a fly line is vast and can be bewildering.
In this video I run through some of the types of indicators I have used over time. It may give you a steer as to which ones may suit you. If you have a system of bite detection that you think is better than all of these please leave a comment and share your top tip.

Great review, thanks. One of my least detested strike indicators is Loon Strike Out wool. You can make really small indicators with minimal hinging but that remain highly visible. all it takes is a slip knot in the leader.

Hi Paul, I have used that but on the Stillwaters for a technique called the 'tash'. It allows you to fish straight line conventionally with the added bonus of an indicator. Not tried it on the river. Thanks for the tip.

They are my go too, you can make them small just like a dry fly. I am keen to try the wax though

When I use light tippets, I use a four to six inch length of pole elastic between fly line an leader. Two advantages it buffers hook sets and a strike indicator all in one.

Video Super! Only about the indicator in the form of a spring, I read that this is not an indicator, but an element that allows you to smoothly feed a fly for shy fish. But someone thought it was an indicator, and the mistake went to the people.

Stein, I have not heard that before. Thanks for the information.

Lindsay, I read it to Paul Gaskell, and he heard it from Stuart Croft. Here are some excerpts from the text: "... The problem is, that there is a really good chance that this is NOT their primary function. It is just something that has been seen, assumed to be understood and then published in print. ... You see, their main purpose for the cunning competitors who developed them, was to function as an “air brake” and cause the little weighted nymph patterns overtake the rest of the leader and then drop gently down through the air onto the water . Yes, they would have some properties that could aid take detection - but that doesn’t seem to be the main reason to make them into coils. Ignoring the crucial “air brake” function and majoring on the take detection is a pretty big mistranslation. ... "

@@Sribolov very interesting, they don't seem to find that much favour anymore. I am not a fan personally.

NZ indicator wool Is good when you need to hold up a big nymph at distance

Jim, it was used here for a method called the moustache, you basically tied in a length at the braided loop to fish buzzers deep. Very effective.

Thank you for the very informative video. I've tried Skafars neon wax, and, while it is, indeed, very visible, it's also, at least in my hands, very messy. Could you tell me how you apply it and how, in general, you keep it from getting everywhere? Thanks, Alex.
@lindsayiflyfish
@lindsayiflyfish 4 года назад
Hi Alex, I find it is most messy if it has not been kept at the right temperature. It like being warm, if that makes sense. In winter I keep it close to my body for heat. Once I am rigged up when the leader is under tension I protrude only a 1mm or so above the rim and apply it to the section of leader I am going to be using for indication. Hope that explains it ok, if not please come back to me.

Thanks, Lindsay. I do have two more questions, actually. 1. Do you apply the wax to tippet or your sighter. I assume it's to your tippet. If so, what is the thinnest (smallest diameter) tippet that is visible with the wax? 2. When you apply the wax, do you apply it by moving it up and down the tippet, or across (i.e., at right angles to the tippet)? Best, Alex
@lindsayiflyfish
@lindsayiflyfish 4 года назад
Alex, I rarely apply to the tippet itself but to the actual French leader.

hi I have recently bought a euro nymphing setup and bought the neon wax but I am unsure where I put it on do I put it on the tippet or the tapered leader? thanks
