Euro nymphing is sexy - But the INDICATOR RIG is still Effective when fished properly. I'll show you

In this video, I'm going to answer one of the most common questions I get asked and explain How to Effectively Nymph a Run while Fly Fishing. I pick a clip from my Wyoming series and play it start to finish, detailing everything from where to start, when to add weight and the other adjustments I make to catch multiple trout from a run. This method, allows me to break down a hole and fish it thoroughly. The results speak for themselves...lots of trout taken on an indicator rig! See my other Fly Fishing Tips Below...

I find watching your videos super helpful because you do a good job of showing entire sequences from the fisherman's perspective, usually including one or two drifts before the take and showing where you cast to, how and when you're mending, what the indy is doing to signal a take, etc. And on clear streams your videos are HD enough to see exactly where the fish was when it took the fly, so it's even helpful in terms of learning to read the stream. Good way of providing a concrete, repetitive demonstrations of all the advice that books or other videos offer across dozens and dozens of differently structured pools and runs. Really very helpful videos without being "instructional." Thanks for taking the time to break it down a bit more, especially the "Rule of 3" and how often you adjust weight. Much appreciated!

Awesome to hear it. I definitely try to show more of the day and what really happened which is why I try to record as much as I can. Also important to be real and not edit the footage. I also believe this provides some credibility to the vids...not just making click bait!

That was excellent viewing. I do like having things explained like this. I tried flies and nymphs when I was a teenager but never caught a thing. My best ever day was with a tiny float (one small shot to cock it) and 8 foot of leader with a uk size 6 hook. Bait was half a loaf of wholemeal rolledinto tiny balls. That day I caught 36 trout (12 to 14 inches long) and two large fat Chub. My best day ever aged 14.

Questions regarding your fly rod tube on your truck, do you keep your rods rigged in transport? Does the sun damage your rods/lines? Thanks!
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 3 года назад
I haven't noticed any heat damage...but I'm careful not to leave my truck setting in full sun or not leave rods in it when I'm not using them. I keep them up there when I'm traveling between streams but not so much as a daily storage option. But, I've checked the tubes after a day in the sun and they were not hot...not like the hood of my truck. One thing I never hear is to keep reel covers on when transporting...the vibration has caused my reels to come unseated and thumbscrews to loosen to the point the reel feel from the locker or unspooled with line every where when I opened it.

@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 3 года назад
No question, I have seen guys do the same. Funny how many fish I catch in a spot I plan to stand. This is the H3f 10ft 4wt...I do find it more versatile. Had the H3d 9ft 5wt for a couple years but after fishing my buddies 10ft 4t on the Juan Sept 2019, I switched to this and super glad I did. Love the presentation of a 4wt and reach a 10ft rod offers. And it has handled big water like the white river and small water like this clip with no issue. I think every vid I have done this year (with a white label) is this rod. Went with the F version for the extra flex and mending ability. Definitely not as fast as the D.

Really, really helpful video as I fish a ton of streams here in CO about this same size/cfs (LOVED your CO series & need to get to the SW corner of the state). I approach a section pretty much like you do but don't add weight as I work upstream and I know that 100% of the time I'm missing fish after catching one or two. Question - are you using removable split shot and if so what brand? I've been using non-removable which would prevents me from easily adding/removing weight like this.
@lenzflyfishing

@DGaydon
@DGaydon 3 года назад
@@LooknFishy Thanks! Ya I think the one area I can improve on my game big time is more frequently adjusting my indicator and adding weight. Seem to have way more impact than changing flies (which I'm dead convinced is more mental confidence thing than "match the hatch")
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 3 года назад
Yea, I can say I pretty much fished the same 5 to 10 flies all summer...caddis, mayflies and stones. Imo, presentation (depth, size) are way more important, especially out west where fish have limited growing seasons. That changes with catch and release, trophy or really pressured streams where fish get conditioned to seeing lots of flies and anglers. In those situations fish can get fly sensitive!

Dang...I would have switched techniques years ago if I had to cut and re-tie. I use Dinsmore removable split shot...but there are other options. @LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 3 года назад
So it's a combination of being old and learning to fly fishing on Arkansas tailwaters. We don't have much wading water and what we do have sometimes is more slow moving deep pools where an indi is useful. Then the water level changes quickly and now you need a boat. Really started checking into it when I started traveling outside of the state more where it seems to be really popular.

I started filming my fishing with a GoPro 8. Looking for some tips. What mode do you film in? What editing software do you use? I don’t think the quality of my uploaded videos matches what the GoPro is actually recording.

So I shot in 1080 at 60 fps with a wide view. The other settings are factory. I edit with adobe premier elements 13 (free on my laptop in 2013). The export is probably where the footage is getting compressed. I never use the quick export settings but rather do the advanced and use the mp4 with 254 codec (might be 245)...it's the recommended codec for yt, and set the quality at 100%. The files go from...quick export at 2000 gb to my setting of 50k gb. I learned all this search youtube tutorials for my editing program...highly recommend searching the program you have. The other thing I avoid is, editing the footage...every adjustment degrades the video some. I basically add some lighting when needed and cut the clips as needed...no one has time to watch a 4 min clip of one fish lol...so I cut the slow parts to get to the meat of the video. Hope some of that helps.

How do you keep your yarn indicator riding high after a few casts?

Poly mac yarn (yt dorsey yarn indicator) is super buoyant. But I apply a gel flotant as needed.

Whenever I'm fishing, I can never tell whether there are no fish in a hole, or I'm just doing something wrong. If you could only use one size split shot what would it be?
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 3 года назад
Haha...if I could only only pick one size shot, I'd throw dries or a streamer! Gotta have a variety to cover each situation...shallow riffles, deep holes, back of pools, front of pools, etc! If you're not snagging bottom every so often, you're not deep enough!

@@LooknFishy I assume you have a 9' rod? How much line do you generally throw, in water this size? You figure 20 or 30' when your fly is out there? Hard to tell in a video of course. Trying to compare it to my Tenkara. I have a 13' rod and generally will have say 18' of line hanging off the end, so 31' give or take. Is that more clear? Dont read what I'm typing, read what I'm thinking....after all, my wife can. LOL!

@@opusthe2nd haha, I'm pretty sure your wife thinks, you only think about 1 or 2 things. But you were on point...10ft rod with 20 to 30ft. Less when I'm high sticking.

Do you put your weight in between the flies or above them?
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 3 года назад
Above the knot to the first fly. Example...my rig might look like this....9ft 2x leader....tippet ring...1ft of 3x off that...orvis tippet knot...with 1ft of 4x to first fly (palomar knot and tag to second fly) Shot goes above tippet knot.

Thanks dude! There's nothing in fly fishing that's sexy, if we're being honest. In most cases, we've taken the simple act of catching fish and made it super complicated lol!

@@LooknFishy I don't know, seeing a 100 lb tarpon in 3 feet of water or tailing bonefish is pretty sexy! We do over complicate things, that's part of the reason I'm not interested in euro nymphing........more lines, different rods.......etc. But it's all good, whatever floats your boat!
