16 hellfires are good in Cold War, but this is 21st century. Tiger defeated Apache multiple times in contests since introduction. In fact Tiger is more expensive then Apache due to materials its made of and electronics. Modern attack helicopter tactics require mobility and maneuverability, which Tiger mastered. Most of missions in todays conflicts are CAS and recon, which Tiger were specifically designed to do. Apache were designed to stand against Warsaw tanks.
@MrHoldenmaloo Wrong, the Tiger range is twice the Apache's one (Tiger : 430 nm at 157kn, so approx 2h45min Apache : 257 nm at 143kn, so approx. 1h50min
@zidbecfiggig also the tiger is much more modern and at the start of its life where the apache is an old (still very very good) thats been upgraded. the tiger has a lower radar cross-section and its crew and systems proteced from 23mm autocannon fire, EMP, chemical and even biological warfare. and sorry in my comment below but everywhere i said 12.7mm I acually meant 23mm
@zidbecfiggig yes but the tiger is better suited (and designed) for the scouting role (the australian tiger is the ARH varient which stands for Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter) because its more manuverable, its lighter, its slightly smaller and its composite carbon-fiber kevlar fusalage is bullet proof up to 12.7mm all over where as the apache is only resistant to 12.7mm in the vital areas (eg. cockpit, engines, gearbox) but not some of the avionics bays below the cockpit and the tail boom ect.
@AreUBlem they are good but they have become old a new design (like this helo) will be better and the good things of the apache will remain in this helo
tigers are great but are not good for everything as they cant stay in the air for as long as the apaches. they both have their advantages too so I think Australia should buy some british apache mk1's.(yankee AH64D's arnot as good
I hope whoever buys these copters are confident and don't regret not buying the Apache. Now Apache Block III. Tiger is a Good copter, but Apache I think is much more high tech and powerful, battle harden and tested.
Also its quite funny talking about best FCS and sensors and Apache. Apaches radar is so unreliable that pilots keep it disabled for most of the time. There are reports that it couldnt even detect tanks in middle of desert and still give false alarms, pilots rather use FLIR in combat. I guess europeans simply took lesson and prefered mast mounted FLIR instead of unreliable technology.
