Giant Hubs Episode 2: The Port of Rotterdam: Europe's biggest port and gateway to the world.
The Port of Rotterdam is among the largest logistics centers in the world. With a handling capacity of about one million three hundred thousand tons - per day!
Punctuality is the definitive factor for success at Europe's largest port. More than 180,000 people work in the port area and help to keep this logistical masterpiece safe - and operating on time. From maritime pilots and terminal operators to coast guards. Everyone follows a carefully synced and always tight schedule.
Every year, more than 130,000 ships call at Europe's largest seaport. Container ships, inland ships and cruise ships. A total of 350 a day.
With 140 million tons of container goods entering the port each year, "unwanted" cargo also gets through. Europol estimates that half of all cocaine circulating in Europe is smuggled through Rotterdam. Suspicious containers are a case for customs. 650 officers are on duty in the Port of Rotterdam every day.
The biggest port in Europe is also one of the most innovative in the world. The operator ECT opened the world's first automated terminal here all the way back in 1993. The 100 automated vehicles are the secret of this terminal's success. They were invented in Rotterdam, and are now gaining ground at more and more ports around the world. They save on personnel costs - and time.
The Universe of the port of Rotterdam: A giant hub, bigger than the island of Manhattan. Get an exclusive look behind the curtain and learn what it takes to keep it running on time.

@@majorpygge-phartt2643 yeah since then the maasvlakte 2 has been made, atleast some of it, there still have to be some terminals afded for containers, but more impressive is that they are going to try and make it all automated, making the port of rotterdam not the biggest, but alot more efficient. The American version of these documentaries (they're made for different markets around the world) seem not only to be written for 13-year-olds but written by 13-year-olds. All the translations are wrong and they use terms like catastrophic, terrible, immense, etc., every time they can, even if what's been shown has none of those characteristics. Way to emphasize American stereotypes.

@@luxembourger Very true, as is this is true for every country I know in the world. Its a mechanism I think. Most people tend to be nationalistic in a way, see the world from their own country perspective. It helps if you travel a lot or if you live in other countries. You will even look at your own country with a different perspective is my experience. In Holland we complain that Americans don't now much about Europe, but when you turn around the question and ask yourselves what do we now about the US ( Or Asia, or Latin America) then we know also very little, myself included. Funny is that most people don't look into the mirror. How much Europeans now all the US states and their capitals ? We should not judge others if we don't judge ourselves first.

Why don't they bring the ship in a dry dock so one can really see what sort of work must be done.?

The dog sniffing is weird. Why not just pump the air out with the dog beside you at the container and clear it right away rather than collecting jars and a big contraption to hold the jars in a special room.. they both found the placed cocaine smell jar but then stops..didn't smell them all just stops when find placed jar??

I'm disappointed, my question remain unanswered : What's the size of the port in football fields units ?
@JonasJGB
@JonasJGB 4 года назад
Yayaya123, if I did my maths correct. The port should be about 23,668 football fields. (1 football field = 1.32 acres (American football field! No soccer field!). 12,643 Hectares = 31,241.533 acres. 31,241.533/1.32 = 23,667.828.) (NOTE: these are American decimal points! (US), = (EU). & (US). = (EU), )

Realised that Rotterdam's port is ~18% the size of (1:48) and about as long (2:06) as the country of Singapore, which handles even more maritime cargo

Singapore doesn't need to distribute all over the continent. No dry materials just a container harbor that's real easy to manage. And of course the harber works well it's a Dutch design.

Amerikanen kunnen natuurlijk niet snel genoeg lezen en beschouwen iedere andere (gesproken) taal als niets meer dan achtergrondgeluid. Toch had ik liever ondertitels gehad want hier valt geen reet van te verstaan zo.

13.7 million containers per year and 15 samples on the sniffer carousel. Perhaps the very definition of a lost cause.

Funny, the very most people will first think at amazing European cities like Hamburg, rarely Rotterdam. But the harbour bigger.
