I want to “defend” the coach station a bit. The reason why the station is in this half-finished state is because of the ongoing RailBaltica construction. That is the reason there are excavations on every step. The platforms along with shelter roofs used to be on the side you walked outside but now will be replaced with viaduct for high-speed train traffic. And the station building is a good example of soviet modern architecture.

It's true, but it's still incredibly sad to see some of the most presentable buildings in our capital (except the airport, which is excellent, the rest - Port, train station and bus station) almost haven't changed since the soviet days. So many buildings have been renovated and now look European and presentable (which is great), but for some reason these buildings are left with nothing.

Nice memories! My wife and I traveled from Vilnius to Riga in 2019 in a completely empty Luxexpress VIP class (back of the bus). At the same time, the front of the bus was occupied. I bought tickets 10 minutes before departure, a regular class cost 21 euros, and VIP - 28. I decided that this was a new opportunity :) I even did exercises there, warmed up by jumping :) With love for Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia from Belarus!

Yes! I was traveling from Tallinn to Riga and bought a standard seat. While boarding, the gent in front of me explained that his travel friend was ill and had to stay longer in Tallinn, so he gave me his luxury seat. The area behind the curtain was 1 to 1 seats and they were like dentist chairs and reclined. They had had small storage areas for smaller bags, and counter space for devices and the free coffees from the machine on the bus. It had a larger than coach, adjustable screen to watch many channels and movies, but I preferred to enjoy the beautiful scenery during the five-hour ride.

I don't like announcements with an American or Oxford English accent on public transport in Europe. It feels so corporate, like the company just outsources it without giving it much thought. I prefer they used local voice actors with a light accent, it feels much more authentic and welcoming.

Indeed the view is better in the front, and the ride is smoother.... But, in the back of the bus there's more privacy. Like on airplanes, where the business class seats are in the front of the plane, every person boarding the plane (or bus) needs to go past me, in a narrow environment. I'd rather not have hundreds of people squeeze by my face and touch my backrest or me, especially during the pandemic.

Too bad, they don't look too shabby (I have a thing for modernist architecture). But I agree, there should be more shelter at platform level, this is the Baltics, after all, it's with a bit of exaggeration 9 months of Winter and 3 months of Spring. A simple bus shelter would be a big help already.

That is a very nice bus! Both inside and out! I really like the ‘Relax’ class. The 2+1 seating. Looks to be an extremely comfortable and quit bus. I also like the styling and outside look of the bus. It definitely does not look government, commercial or metro city bus grade, but like a nice vehicle to be seen in and ride in. From the small number of passengers on this bus, do these buses operate with any type of government funding in order to cover the costs of running these routes so lightly loaded? These kinds of load factors I saw on this bus would be prohibitively expensive to offer in the US environment if there was not a significant government subsidy. Especially at the fare prices you quoted.

The fun thing about this Lux Express is that its actually like a 10y old service and buses. :D They used to operate Estonian Tallinn-Tartu lines and grew from there. For me, when travelling across Estonia, this was the standard. :D :D

There are long distance buses from Riga to Berlin and Paris, though airfares are just as cheap or cheaper. I'm traveling to Riga in Sept. and I will use the intercity bus system, also punctual and cheap, though not as luxurious as your bus. Riga also has a train station located not far from the bus station.
@NonstopEurotrip

I don't think I'd take a bus for that long 😂
@barvdw
@barvdw 2 года назад
depends probably why you're travelling, and how much luggage you take. Cheap airfaires are generally without luggage, and fees for that can quickly rise higher than the original airfare. If luggage is free, I understand why it's the preferred travel option for people moving somewhere for a longer time, like lorry drivers, cleaners, etc, of which quite a few live for months in Western Europe to work.

@@barvdw The United States has long distance buses from Los Angeles to New York City, a four day trip. My cousin actually took this trip several times because he was afraid to fly. There are no savings for this over flying and the trip is brutal. My back and neck would hurt for days and lack of sleep is bad for your health. Mexicans like to travel on buses and Mexico to Houston on a bus is very popular.

@@peterrisbergs7156 which is why I prefer trains. Clearly more space, you can walk around to stretch your legs, and there's room for actual beds if you travel overnight. As a teenager I traveled by bus overnight, that was brutal, my almost 40-yo ass couldn't do it anymore.

Great trip. Finally, bus trip again since a long time ago. I hope in the future, please make more bus trip report. Something I can get from this trip is the premium seating located behind the standard seating. Bit unusual, because in common the premium seating always located in the front, but on the other side when the bus combining standard seat and sleeper seat, it's usual to see the standard seat on the front.

Agreed, I like to look outside ahead of me, which would be an argument to book a seat in the front if possible. Although I prefer trains, this bus trip looks excellent.
