I've been to Ljubljana, Slovenia. It was beautiful, clean and cheap. The bus and train station are centrally located, and there was an information office where the guy spoke better American English than most Americans, lol. The food was fantastic. They really seemed to enjoy meat. The city reminded me of a combination of Hansel & Gretel meets Dracula. The people were very relaxed and I wasn't convinced that the place was real. Not sure what it would be like to live there, but visiting was a treat. I was shocked to find a delicious Chinese restaurant across from the train station. The menus were in Slovenian, Chinese and English, and it was really surprising to me that the waitress (who was Chinese) spoke English. I spent an entire day in the city checking out the castle in the center of town and walking along canals lined with weeping willow trees. The main bridge in town had fanged dragons, and the teeth had been painted red. If I had known more, I would have gone just a little further to find the caves that are considered some of the most amazing in the world. I ran into many Germans in their early 20s who like to visit Slovenia for the nude beaches.

Ljubljana is my fav city so far. it's a perfect mix of slavic, germanic and romanse cultures. It's very expensive tho. I wonder if it's as cool to live in as it is to visit.. Re menus - never seen one in Chinese, they are in Slovenian, German or English

These locations look like regular places that the locals just be living their lives. That is like Kingston and our other southern parishes that don't really get tourist but have hidden gems that not even locals know about.

17:00 the beauty of these off the beaten path places is that more often than not, the locals are in fact happy to see you visiting and they will go out of their way to help you. Just ask. Besides, no hotels doesn't mean no restaurants or bars. Finding a toilet should be no problem.

I don't really know for the other places but I live in Lyon, France, which is kinda close to Annecy. During the summer and even during regular weekends when it's still warm in september or october, it's packed with tourists. Not necessarily ppl from far away, but people do visit this place a lot. It's really worth it though. Really beautiful ! If you love nature, it's also a good place to be, you can enjoy the lake's crystal clear water (which you can even swim in), bike around the lake, or go on a hike in the mountains, as it's really surrounded by mountains. It's also really close to good spots for skiing. The only thing is that it's often crowded and it's expensive.

Many of these amphitheaters still host events today, mostly music or theater/opera.

Having now travelled to most European countries, to me the most beautiful of the 'underrated' countries is far and away Slovenia. It's stunning. You still have high mountains, snowy winters with Lake Bled just being stunning all year round. Summer is stunning too, as the elevation also makes the towns and cities and mountains cooler at night. And the scenery is like a fairytale. A small but incredibly beautiful country and I want to go back and see more. Not many tourists as it's not that easy to get to and it really is a secret, even among Europeans. So Top underrated is Slovenia. Second are the inland cities of Spain, like Segovia, Cordoba, Granada. And Third I'd probably go with either Brno and Cesky Krumlov in Czech Republic, or the stretch from Are to Trondheim (Sweden-Norway border region) for the mountains, the summer cabins, the hikes and then finally the sea ias well as a beautiful small city in Trondheim, Norway. It's hard though, there are so many underrated or under-visited places, and also so many over-visited places where it's hard to move. In summer, I basically avoid any Mediterranean coastal place now as they're far too crowded and expensive. And winter is miserable north of the Alps while summer can be too hot unless you're further north than Germany or at a higher elevation somewhere.
