European clocks ran slow for a bit. British clocks didn't.

Many people sent me this story: it covers my favourite topics of power grids and temporal anomalies. But when the mainstream press have already covered it, how could I add something more? The answer: by adding another pet topic, Unnecessary British Patriotism. And a teasmade.

Gosh! It does not seems to be an april fool. In year 2018, people still sell ill-conceived clocks, and take so bad healing measures... It seems we did not learn anything since Titanic.

It's only right because the people who changed their clocks can again and the clocks that no one changes or are in places that can't easily are be accessed will be put right. In a few months there will be no evidance it even happened but if they didn't we would be finding clocks for years with the wrong time.

Never expected one of your videos to be an explanation for my clock problem. I live in the Netherlands and I always run my clock 10 minutes late. And I suddenly found that it ran 17 minutes late. I thought my clock was broken, it's really funny to find out that the entire European grid was broken and my clock was fine!

When I taught in a High School in the US, it felt a bit surprising/outdated that the classroom clocks were all battery powered and set to whatever time the classroom teacher set it to. Because I had graduated HS over 15 years prior in another state and all the classroom clocks were synchronized to a central one in the main office and so they were each exactly the same. Although, that did mean that when we came back to school after power had been out from snow, we got to sit there as the clocks spun very fast to get to the correct time; the automatic mechanism only allowed the gear to move the hands forward/clockwise.

There was an incident in the 60s in USA where an overloaded power grid caused the frequency to drop over the course of several minutes, from 60 to 50Hz, before cutting out entirely. With DC electricity the resevoir from which you initially withdraw energy (and which is refilled by the power supply) is capacitance, whose voltage is proportional to the energy stored in it, which means that whenever you consume more energy than supplied the voltage will go down and vice versa. This is presumably where your intuition comes from that drawing excess power ought to make the voltage go lower. Capacitance is however of no use for storing alternating current. Instead, with grid power, the resevoir of energy from which load is served is the inertia of the many synchronous generators attached to the grid, and withdrawing energy from this causes these generators to lose kinetic energy and spin down, thus lowering the grid frequency.

In all fairness, my line of thinking came from a digital psw inverter because that's what I've been looking at lately to replace my analog inverter, but it is odd that after 30 years of using analog inverters, I couldn't get there logically. Funny how the mind works. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to dumb it down for me 😂🤣
