@@european-reacts Rose was played by Betty White. She was one of the most beloved American actresses of the last 75 years. She died a couple of years ago. I believe she was 99 or 100. She had acting parts well into her 90s.

Betty White, the actress who played Rose, was extremely intelligent and extremely sassy as herself. She plays Rose as being from a very small town and really naive with no sophistication at all. If you watch the series from the beginning you'll start to understand Rose. She cuts loose with some real zingers at times.

To answer your question about accents, Sophia and Dorothy are from Brooklyn, New York; Rose is from St. Olaf, Minnesota, and Blanche is from Atlanta, Georgia. Yes, you definitely need to watch the whole series, starting from the beginning. I'm a 38 year-old guy, and I love this show! Sophia reminds me of the old ladies in Spain when I lived and studied there in 2007. They just call it like they see it, and they don't care if it offends anyone.

Rose is played by Betty White. She was the last of the 4 to pass away. She died less than a month before her 100th birthday. In real life she was a wonderful, funny, sweet woman who loved animals. They all live in Blanche 's house since she's a widow it helps pay the bills. Rose is from Minnesota and always tells her crazy stories about home. The home they all live in now is in Florida. Stan is Dorothy's ex husband, and Sophia and Rose are also widows. This show is so funny it even appeals to men and the younger generations. Thanks for sharing. ❤

The tall lady Bea Arthur, born in Brooklyn, NY, served from 1943-1945 in the United States Marine Corps Women’s Reserve. She was in the transport division as a driver and dispatcher. She enlisted only 5 days after it was allowed. She achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and met her husband during this time. They were married in Ithaca, NY. Born in 1922 she passed away in 2009 at the age of 86. She won two Emmys that I know of for her role in Golden Girls. For some reason, known only to her, she always denied serving in the Marine Corps. But thanks to records in the National Archives and the Freedom of Information Act anyone can research this amazing women. I had to do a paper years ago for school and thought I’d pull a fast one on the teacher by picking a tv show actor or actress. Joke was on me as I just unearthed more and more information about this TV icon.

There's an entire episode around the question of Dorothea's parentage because of how different she and Sophia look. Rose is delightfully naive, and Betty White plays her to the fullest! They cover a LOT of topics in this show, funny and serious. Blanche's accent is deep Georgian. Think Scarlett O'Hara and Gone With The Wind. I'm enjoying watching you discover this show! It is one of the foundations of my childhood.

The women are stereotypes of the regions where they came from in the US. Rose is of Scandinavian descent from Minnesota. Minnesota was settled by Scandinavians and the state has a reputation for being very very nice and maybe a little naive. Rose's character is an extreme example of that.

The actress that plays Rose (Betty White) is very famous from The Mary Tyler Show back in the 1970s. She was also in the NFL commercial compilation you did a few days ago!!! Her character is "sweet, innocent, and considered kinda dense." Florida is famous for being whereva lot of senior citizens from northern states retire to. The weather is warmer! Sophia calls her daughter Dorothy, "Pussycat" as a nickname/term of endearment. It's simply another name for "cat". In one episode, Dorothy asked Sophia why she called her that, and Sophia said be she loves pussycats (cats) and she loves her, so she gave her the nickname. Dorothy (tallest one) and Sophia (glasses) are mother and daughter from New York, Blanche (southern accent/crazy about men) is from Georgia, and Rose (ditzy blonde) is from Minnesota. This explains the accents. They're all widowed except for Dorothy, whose ex-husband Stan, drops by on occasion and Sophia can't stand him. Blanche owns the house, after her husband George died, she didn't want to live alone and advertised for female roommates. She met Rose first while shopping, then Dorothy came to the house to get information about a room, and Sophia joined soon after because her retirement home burned down. After sometime, there's questioning from authorities that she may have started the fire, but you can watch the episode for the answer. They all live in Miami, Florida in this house. In another video, you mentioned the height of Dorothy, saying that she was tall. She/actress Bea Arthur was 5ft.10in. tall, which is my height, and I'm also a woman. She usually wore flats. (Shoes without heels) Being this height worked fine for me as I used to be a model, and I love being this height. A large number of TV actors are no taller than 5ft. 10in., male and female because it's easier to keep all of the actors in the frame without having to widen the shot in order to capture the tall actors, which would make the shorter actors look like they're pushed back and the focus is only on the tall people. "Designing Women" is another favorite, but some didn't like how political they could be. They had a lot of hilarious moments. They are a pair of two sisters, one owns a home decorating business, there are two other female employees, all four are best friends, and they have a delivery man, who is always caught in the middle of their discussions on "Women's Issues". 😄

My deceased grandmother in-law was the epitome of Rose, I swear. They’re Northern transplants from NE Ohio to Arkansas, where I’m from. Her parents were from Finland-they owned a small family dairy farm and bakery, and she was the sweetest, most naive, innocent person you’ve ever met, God bless her. I loved her dearly, but listening to her stories from her days growing up, I just kept waiting for her to start with, “back in St Olaf...” 😆 When she died at 93, my ex got a tattoo in her memory: a birch tree w/the Finnish word Sisu under it. I love Golden Girls! "Pussycat" is a term of endearment like "kitty cat"...Sophia was using it to refer to her daughter Dorothy. As far as the setting, it takes place in Miami Florida in the 1980s. I agree Estell Getty who played Sophia had some of the best lines, though Bea Arthur (who played Dorothy) and Betty White (who plays Rose) were very famous actresses before this show aired. In fact, Betty White lived the longest (until Dec 3, 2021) and is considered a national treasure. Her character Rose is famous for her hilariously long, confusing stories about growing up on farm in Minnesota. Checkout "The Great Herring War"

Initially, Betty White was to play "Blanche," & Rue to play "Rose." Rue and Bea ("Dorothy") starred in Bea's big US sitcom from the 1970s called "Maude." Rue played Maude's best friend, Vivian and she was kind of a "ditz." Betty played "Sue Ann Nivens" on the 1970s mega hit US comedy, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." She was only supposed to be 1 episode, (Season 4, Episode 1), but the response to her character was so great, that she joined the cast until the show ended in 1977. Sue Ann was called "The Happy Homemaker" at the TV station they all worked at and she had a sharp tongue. The director made the switch at the last minute and Betty was scared to death because she had never played a character like Rose Nylund. The director said that Rose was not "dumb," but "terminally naive." She took what you said literally at face value. Rose was originally from a fictional town (St. Olaf, Minnesota) and the town was not known for anyone being "smart." Rose almost had a "St. Olaf story" for every situation the girls found themselves in. This was one of only 4 shows in US history where all the main actors/actresses won a Primetime Emmy Award & supposedly the feud between Bea & Betty came to ahead because Betty was the first to win her Emmy after the first season. The other shows to accomplish this feat were "All In The Family," "Will & Grace" & "Schitt's Creek."

Sophia's actress was not the youngest actress. Blanche's actress was. That was a rumor people started before Wikipedia was around. Betty White (Rose) and Bea Arthur (Dorothy) were born in 1922, Estelle Getty (Sophia) was born in 1923, and Rue McClanahan (Blanche) was born in 1934. Estelle passed first in 2008, then Bea in 2009, then Rue in 2010, and finally in 2023, Betty went short of her 100th birthday.

If you do decide to watch some episodes watch more than just the first one because it was a pilot and a little odd. It's definitely worth it though. The show is set in Miami, Florida. Florida has long been a place where people retire to. (It's way more expensive now than it would've been in the 80s when this show started.) Blanche owns the house and is looking for roommates. She's originally from Atlanta, Georgia (and has a very stereotypical old money southern accent). Dorothy and Sophia are originally New York (but Sophia's family is from Sicily), and Rose is from St. Olaf, Minnesota (of Norwegian descent). It's very American to know the ancestry of people, but it's all relevant in how they act, sound, and the stories they share. It's part of the friction of them all living together.

She was the youngest and also the first to pass. RIP to all 4 absolute legends. This show will live very on forever ❤❤❤

Glad you discovered them, they were really the best. I started watching back in Brazil from the beginning. Love them ❤

Sophia reminded me so much of my Italian grandmother, my Nonna: how she wore her hair, how she dressed, how she carried her purse, and most of all her caustic wit. The only difference was that my Nonna had a heavy Italian accent.

"Pussycat' is Sophia's nickname for Dorothy (her daughter). It is a term of endearment. Blanche (Rue McClanahan) was actually the youngest. Blanche's accent is from the south (Georgia), Sophia's& Dorothy (Brooklyn, NY) & Rose (Minnesota). Rose is the dumb sweet one. Dorothy is the sarcastic one, Blanche is the slut. Stan is Dorothy's ex-husband. All of the videos for the Golden Girls are great. It is such a great show. I think I have watched every episode at least 3 or 4 times over the years. They have played it on TV since it ended in the Mid 1990s.

The basic premise of the show was that there were three single women on their 50s who shared a house in Miami. Blanche was the sex-obsessed southern belle who was widowed and owned the house. Rose was the naive one from Minnesota who moved in with her to save money. Dorothy was the teacher who was divorced from Stan who was in several clips here. Sophia was Dorothy’s mother who in the premiere was in a nursing home because of a stroke which also took away some of her filter. IIRC, the nursing home had a fire so Dorothy and the others took Sophia in to live with them. Also. With regard to Dorothy being much taller than Sophia, one of the best episodes they did explored whether Dorothy was accidentally switched at birth. ( Foreign Exchange, season 4 episode 24). Definitely worth watching. Also, as others have noted. The actress who played Blanche had played the ditz in a prior successful series and the one who played Rose has played a man-hungry woman. They were originally supposed to essentially recreate these roles but a decision was made to switch and frankly both were such good actresses that they were fantastic in their new characters.

Blanche's accent is Southern Belle - a high society accent of rich Plantation owners. From the southern region of the first 13 States in the USA, also known as the Deep South

I was listening to a guy who performed as Rose in The Golden “Girls” (Drew Droege) talk about her parts. It was usually her job to set up the jokes and how sometimes that doesn’t make the best bits but that part is so integral. But since it’s Bettr White, when she does get a great line, it’s perfect.

Sophie is amplifying the stereo type of "after a certain age both men & women, totally loose their filter" it's as if they have been nice even when the truth is different & now there's not much time left to tell it like it is & who's going to hit an old person! So Let It All Out! ❤😂❤

All four actresses were amazing in their own right. I don't have a favorite because as soon as I would pick, one of the other three would shine just as bright. Rose's thing is that she is a bit naive and gullible. However, she's got some savage comebacks of her own.

Betty White (Rose) was a TV treasure. She began with a game show [Password] with her late husband Alan. You watched her yesterday in a Superbowl commercial. She was the old lady on the field. Betty started on "The Mary Tyler More" MtM production. In her latter years she starred in TVLAND's "Lost in Cleveland. She even had a show for a couple of years playing pranks and using motorized scooters.

Actually, she had her own show in the 50s that was a daytime talk show. She did all the crowd warm ups, singing and produced it. She had a second show in the 70's that was sitcom style. Not sure if it was before after or even during mary Tyler Moore. Hot in Cleveland was one of her last hit shows she worked on and her part was only originally to be a short cameo in the pilot and ended up being in most ( if not all) the episodes and her character was personality closer to Sophia than her rose character from golden girls.

Rise was hilarious, especially when she told her stories about her village growing up. Check to see if there is a video of Rose's best moments. They were truly an ensemble cast, each one important to the group, but outstanding individually.

Other other three women were very well-known and established actresses. Estelle, who played Sophia, was just supposed to be a secondary character but blew it out of the water. "Pussycat" was Sophia's pet name for Dorothy.

I love your reactions to The Golden Girls. I would definitely recommend watching the series. Betty White (Rose) was the last of the 4 to pass away. She is and always will be one of our national treasures! Betty White was a guest host on Saturday Night Live and in my opinion she was fantastic. The Broadway show of The Golden Girls is touring the US right now and I was fortunate to see the show. All the women were played by men. It was HILARIOUS! Thanks for your reaction, it’s great to watch someone who has never seen the show enjoy the best of each character.

Rose was played by Betty White, who was practically a national treasure. She was famous even before doing Golden Girls, although her role as Rose made her even more famous, where she was especially good at pretending to be stupid. In many of her other roles, she was often a stereotypical little old lady, who would speak in a sweet, friendly voice, but say shockingly blunt, crude things. She was hilarious.

All the ladies were remarkable but Rose (Betty While) was a national treasure who did just last year. She is my absolute favorite. You need to react to her. Her character was supposed to be naive. Betty White was one of the smartest women on tv. She was on tv from the 1950’s until her death in 2022.

The Golden Girls are great. I can’t think of one bad episode in the entire 7 series run because each one is full of good gags. Heartwarming and heartbreaking stories. They tackled serious topics too like drug addiction, assisted dying. Burglary. Various medical conditions. Even homelessness. And sexuality. They were really forward for the time it was aired. It’s just a brilliant show. My favourite gag has always got to be the inch of water.

Rose was the most popular one in real life. She was on the Carol Burnett show in the late 70s to early 80's then the show changed to Mama's house in the 90s. Now that was the best 90's show ever. Rose (Betty White) was also on the Super Bowl commercial. You just reacted to the video a few days ago it was the Snickers bar commercial if I'm not mistaken.

Sophia and Dorothy are mother and daughter. And if you watch the season, you will realize that Dorothy inherited her sarcasm from Sophia's savagery. The Golden Girls came out during the 1990s but the show was ahead of its time. I love it!

If you want to see more Rose, watch the compilation Rose clips - or, start watching the series. BTW, the setting of the show is a house in Miami Florida, owned by Blanch, who is from the South. Sophia and Dorothy are mother/daughter from New York; Rose is from St. Olaf (mythical place, I think) in Missouri (I think)
