Hello.. you said Washington DC looks "British". This is because Washington DC was founded and built in 1790 by people who came from England. Most of the cobbled streets and old houses are from that earlier time period (late 1700's - early 1800's).. those old brick homes were just the style people were used to building back then.

The French played a significant role in America winning the Revolutionary War. They were also fascinated by the "American experiment" and the fledgling democracy, especially since their own revolution ended quite differently. If you ask me, the Statue of Liberty is the nicest thing any country has ever gifted to America. It brings tears to your eyes just to see it close up. It has grown in importance with the passage of time and I can't think of a more significant symbol of America.

For perspective, you can drive for 12 hours across Texas and STILL be in Texas. Many visitors don't understand the size of the USA. They think you can go from Florida to California by driving in a day. You will probably have to pick an area and explore it. Where to go depends on what you like. One interesting thing about everyone saying "it's like the films," is that when I'm in locations like that for the first time I never think about movies. That must be the difference between an American mindset and non-Americans. I don't ever think about them as sets even if I already know what they look like because they're famous landmarks featured in movies.

The Liberty Bell was imported from England in 1752 by the Colony of Pennsylvania. It was used to summon the legislature because existing bells could not be heard across the city of Philadelphia. It cracked the first time it was used. It was re-cast twice by local craftsmen. On the last cast they added 10% copper to make the bronze alloy more malleable and tougher. In this form it lasted nearly a century until some time between 1841 and 1845 when a hairline crack appeared. Efforts to drill or file the crack to keep it from spreading failed. The Liberty Bell rang out to proclaim the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. It contains an inscription from Leviticus 25:10 cast into it, ""Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof." The Washington Monument is 555 feet (170m) high, 100 feet taller than the Great Pyramid of Khufu. It was originally supposed to me 600 feet tall but since the base is 55 feet it was felt the 10:1 ratio was ideal. It was the tallest building in the world until the Eiffel Tower was completed. It's still the tallest stone building in the world. It's made of granite from new England faced with Maryland marble. The original marble quarry in New Texas, MD they used for the first third ran out of good stone; the remaining material being lower quality. Marble was sourced from a neighboring quarry for the remainder. Over time the two marbles have weathered into different colors due to slightly different compositions.

@DelGuy03

One will also sometimes hear "no building can be taller than the Washington Monument," but neither is quite true. There is indeed a height restriction in the District of Columbia, but it's more complicated than that. 90 feet on residential streets and calculated by the width of commercial streets. There are also a handful of exceptions that have been granted over the years. The tallest structures are a dozen uninhabitable towers (including the Washington Monument), then the 4 tallest, in order, are the National Shrine, the Old Post Office, the National Cathedral, and the Capitol.

So many here are from other countries. Our flag, just like most countries flags, are a visual representation of it's people as a whole. We, for the most part like it, fly it with pride and shouldn't be ashamed of it or the country. It is definitely not perfect, just as people are not perfect. I was in Germany for 3 years with my Army husband. I can tell you things that I liked about Germany. 1. Mass transportation! You didn't need a car because the buses ran every 15 minutes and we're always on time. Taxi's were cheap too. Trains from one small town to another. Easy! Loved it! 2. If it snowed at night they were out there at 2 am clearing the snow. Major roads were clear all the time. 3. They loved my children. In 1984 there weren't very many babies in Germany. I couldn't go anywhere without an old lady or two snatching my child out of my arms and kissing him. They left chocolate candy in bags on my door for the older children. 4. The castles! In the Rhineland there were castles everywhere! The towns were very clean. I thought they were cleaner in Germany than here in USA. 5. You can take your dog out to a restaurant with the family to eat. My dog "Sat pretty" at every table and got a treat from someone's plate! 6. Beer Gardens! I would take my kids to play and sat and drank a beer while watching them. 7. The beer! Ha ha! You never knew exactly how much alcohol was in each liter bottle from the local brewery. Most areas had their own big brewery. 8. The Autobahn! Germany had freeways long before we did here in the USA. But there are no speed limits on the Autobahn. Nobody drives slow in the left lane. You can get killed for doing that. If you notice a car a mile or two behind you flashing there light, then get over quick because they are traveling a very high rate of speed and will be there before two blinks of your eye! Trees are a blur when you are driving at 120 mph! Some go 160 mph so stay in the right lane! I could probably think of many more but it's late here and I am going to bed now! I hope you enjoyed the difference. I'm sure there are other people that have been there and can tell more. There were more active duty Army in Germany then there was in the USA at the time I was there.

The Eiffel Tower is classified as a monument, like the Statue of Liberty or the Washington monument. Such structures are not considered "buildings" because they were not made to be utilized as residences, stores, or everyday living/working areas. The Empire State building happened to become famous, but it was actually just an office building that was used to house broadcasting stations and other businesses. It is not a monument to anyone or anything.

The tall pointy tower is the Washington Monument. I think 656 feet tall, or roughly 200 meters. I walked up the stares inside as a kid. I lived just across the river and traveled through the city for 25 years. IN the large park in the center of the city they have annual events. I attended an annual frisbee throwing contest and at the end everyone threw a frisbee into the air, tens of thousands were in the photo. The Liberty Bell rang loud for so long on the day of America's freedom form the British king that it broke. It was in the nation;s Capital, Philadelphia, before Washington, D.C.was chosen to be the new capital. The bell remains where it started, in Philadelphia. On September 11th hundreds of 'first responders', mostly firemen, lost their lives trying to save thousands of others. It chokes me up every time I think of it. I am eternally grateful to the French for the Statue of Liberty. A true wonder of the world that reminds me of what America is supposed to be. The green roof on the tall building was made of copper, like many very special very old American buildings, but like the others it was never maintained to keep the copper form getting tarnished over the years, Copper turns green, but it was a shiny gold like sight in the beginning, however it is still impressive to me to know what it took to make, and how proud American's were when they did that. There is definitely a serious threat of danger in the big cities. Years ago the mayor of Washington, D.C., a convicted drug user and user of prostitutes, made a speech which included 'Except for the murder rate, Washington is a very safe city', At the time it had the highest murder rate in the country. America is definitely a mixed bag.

I live in Philadelphia and would say it’s an amazing city to visit and the food is outstanding. Those donuts from Beilers at the Reading Terminal Market really are that delicious (their maple bacon donut is my favorite) and a good cheesesteak always hits the spot. Philly doesn’t get much love from outsiders sadly and I can somewhat understand this as people here can come off as somewhat abrasive, but they will be honest and straightforward about everything. Philadelphians are very proud and especially passionate with their sports teams (we are the only city in the country where its citizens will wreak havoc and cause chaos in celebration of a major win). Homeless people/bums/crackheads are more aggressive here than most other cities but you just have to ignore them. There’s a nice German themed Christmas village that pops up around city hall around the holidays which is also nice. New York is great of course but I prefer Philly as it’s overall much more manageable and less expensive. I’ve traveled to several cities across Germany and loved them all and hope to visit there again soon!

If there is one word I can use to describe a visit to NYC, it would be: “exhausting”. And another word: “overwhelming”. There is so much to see and experience, it can be too much to try cram into a few days. You end up walking for miles just in Manhattan. The best experience would be to stay for two weeks, get a hotel or Airbnb OUTSIDE of NYC (ideally in Westchester county), and take a train into Manhattan. Staying in a suburb outside of NYC allows to decompress from the sensory overload that is Manhattan.

It looks British because Britain was the mother country at our founding and this type of Georgian architecture was common in England at the time. You are also seeing the influences of Greek and Roman architecture that contributed to Georgian architecture and when you look at many of the municipal buildings around Washington like the White House, the Capital and the Supreme Court, they were built in the style you see because principles of government upon which the USA system is based, harken back to the Golden Age of ancient Greece and the Roman Republic. For instance, compare the Pantheon in Rome and the Parthenon in Greece to classic American architecture and the similarities are striking. This type of classical architecture had many revivals over the centuries, including during the Renaissance. If you look at the White House you will see Renaissance Revival elements (Renaissance Revival being a revival of classical architecture) that you will find in building built in Europe during the Renaissance. The popularity of classical architecture has even influenced residential American architecture. Even the common Cape Cod style that's all across America and had a big revival in late 30s into the early 60s in the USA (often under the name "Colonial style") incorporated decorative elements in trim, door and window frames and other details that were added to the simpler elements of the original Cape Cod house from the earliest European colonization of Eastern America. The ubiquitous American two story "Colonial" also displays these elements and, along with the Cape Cod, is one of the most iconic American architectural styles in the USA.

Its the northernmost point of the Appalacian mountains and is almost entirely protected from modern machinery and technology. They cut and maintain all the trails by hand with manual tools, and theres all kinds of beautiful life to be seen. You can see moose, deer, squirrels, chipmunks, tons of different species of birds and insects, and trees and other flora farther than the eye can see in every direction. Its quiet, peaceful and clean (due to a "pack in, pack out" rule) Theres a good book called "Lost on a Mountain in Maine" about the true story of a young boyscout that got lost in that park during a hike. Suggestion: Ask people to "like" a video at the end, AFTER they've watched it. The Washington Monument is 555 feet (169.164.164 meters) tall. If you visit Washington DC, try to go in March, when all the cherry trees around the river and parks are in bloom. The building with the elephant is part of the Smithsonian Institute, which is a complex of 21 museums and the National Zoo. 7Eleven stores were originally open from 7am to 11pm. Now they're always open but still have locks on the doors for some reason. We built some beautiful buildings before the 1950s. After that, style changed to be more about function than aesthetics. If you want your heart broken, look for photos of the old Penn Station in NYC and then the new Penn Station. Philly Cheesesteak = a sandwich on a roll containing long, thin slices of beefsteak and melted cheese. In every city, some sections are more safe than others. If you visit here, do your research and keep yourself safe. The oldest bridge in NYC is High Bridge, an 1840s aqueduct for bringing in water from the north. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TgCwpLrnGCI.html

Probably already been explained, but just in case…the Eiffel Tower is technically not a “building”. It’s the most famous “tower” in the world, and the Great Wall of China is the most famous “wall” in the world. But the Empire State Building is the most famous “building” in the world. Also, Washington DC has a height restriction on all of its buildings because nothing can be taller than the Washington Monument.

Washington DC doesn't have a ton of tall buildings, but is still a large city. 5.1 million people or so.

The Height of Building Act (1910) is a federal law that imposes maximum heights on buildings within Washington DC. Maximum height of 130 feet on commercial streets and 90 feet on residential streets. Pennsylvania Avenue is the exception as there are parts that are 160 feet. The height is based upon the width of the street. There is also the Overhead Wires Law (1888) that prohibited overhead wires in parts of DC. These laws are still enforced to this day. 🙂

when visiting this country you should seperate sights and goals into two catagories: 1.Cultural 2. Natural ...also you cannot drive from NYC to LA in a day so you need to pick a region. you will find that the old part of the country is very different, in many ways, than the west or newer part. anything west of St. Louis would be considered the pioneer states while The South ranges from Virginia to Texas. also the West is divided between the pre-Civil war and post Civil war states. Oregon, Washington, and California are very pioneer while the midwest is very homestead. For Natural wonders, you just can't beat the west from San Francisco to Yellow Stone Montana. Look up Crater Lake Oregon for a great example of natural sights. The east coast remains the cultural birth place of this country so it has the best colonial sights.

While New York and Washington DC are cool places to visit, especially if you are from another country, you have so many great places to choose from especially in the backcountry of the U.S.. I have been to 48 of the 50 states and lived in 17 of them. Hiking the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails are the #1 suggestion I would give to a young foreign traveler for sure! Happy Trails!

The TV show “Friends” was filmed at Warner Brothers Studio in Burbank California. They used stock footage of New York City for the cut scenes. Even when they were filing outside in “New York”, that was actually a backlot set at Warner Brothers called “New York Street”. Phoebe’s run in Central Park was also filmed at Warner Brothers, it’s a backlot set that’s small park area and they added extra trees and filmed from two different angles to give the illusion of Phoebe running to catch up with Rachel. It’s not only more convenient to shoot at a studio lot, but you have complete control of everything, especially if you’re on a backlot and filming a city scene. You will rarely see a prolonged scene in any film or show where they are on location in a public place for very long. It’s just an unpredictable setting. Most city scenes are shot on a studio lot with stock footage mixed in. 🙂

Most cities in the US are reasonably safe. Like all big cities there are areas that you are best advised to stay away from and there are always the pickpockets and such who go where the tourists go; but I've visited nearly every big city in the country and never felt in danger. A Philly Cheesesteak is absolutely delicious.

Re DC: you can not only see it quite close-by but also go on tours inside the White House; there are height limits in DC to maintain the majesty of the monuments; the “park” is called The Mall and it is surrounded by the many Smithsonian museums on the same side of the surrounding streets; it is the Capitol (o sound) not capital (a sound).;

For something more affordable than NYC try New Orleans. Amazing town. Go when Mardi Gras isnt happening. It's cheaper and you'll avlid a million drunk people. Great cajun food and live music in these cool little cafe's and clubs that exist in big numbers. St Augustine Florida has a sea shell fort made by Conquistadors and a very pretty Spanish town. It's a hidden gem by Jacksonville. Alaska is cheaper than NY on most things and is incredible for hiking, fishing and hunting. Alaska is my favourite state so far. Don't forget Las Vegas which can be affordable depending on your choices. Very fun and cheap flights and hotels. Endless entertainment. NYC is nice and all but it is so expensive.

With the video from upon the Empire Stare building shows you how small New York City really is. It is just tall and overpopulated
@joerosenman3480
@joerosenman3480 3 месяца назад
Overpopulated, yes (not compared to Mexico City but I digress…), but small? Have you walked from the Battery to Inwood? Or across Queens? I once walked from the Sunnyside Train Yards to Bayside-took a good part of the afternoon and I still had nearly half of Queens to go. Brooklyn is nearly as big. NYC is hardly small; it’s population is heavily clustered around mass transit. Ironic since mass transit grew around population areas, and once established population areas grew around mass transit. But there it is. Ground zero is midtown Manhattan. The further away from that you go the less available mass transit becomes and the more space opens up. It’s entirely causal.

Lawrence Brown's vids are fairly well balanced and informative. When he isn't speaking from his own knowledge, he tells you. Since he's lived here for over a decade, and his wife is from here, he has a much more balanced view. Yes, that building is the Capitol, where the Senate and House of Representatives make the National Laws. Our 7-Elevens suck compared to the ones in Japan.

The nouns "capital" (Hauptstadt) and "capitol" (Sitzgebäude der Regierung) are pronounced identically. And the same is true of "capital" (wirtschaftlicher Investierungsmittel) and the adjective "capital" (hauptsächlich).

Chris, nice video. But I have to comment on your comment of the Eiffel tower being more well know world wise a=than the Empire State Building. I think that you are really reflecting in your European heritage here. If you recall that it is US movies and TV shows that are seen world wide, and so many of these have the Empire State building in them. French movies are not world wide, so alone this would make the Empire State Building world known. As I mentioned to you in a previous episode of yours, keep an open mind, which means try to unlock your bias ans just absorb. All of this will open your horizons.
