In the 80s, Nintendo didn't have an office in Europe, so they relied on local companies to release their games and hardware. NES was released on September 1 1986 in Scandinavia (Sweden, Norway and Denmark) and some other European countries. Then it was released in 1987 in the other "half of Europe, distributed by different companies. This is probably why there are so many different European versions of it. NoE was established in 1990, so they were around when the SNES came out.
Sweden still has its own company, Bergsala, who exclusively manages distribution of Nintendo's products in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland Norway and Sweden). The rest of Europe is handled by NoE. Also, while Sweden was among the first to receive the NES on September 1 1986 (since Bergsala has always been based in Sweden), the other Nordic countries didn't get it until the year after.
Great video. Mine is a Japanese Family Computer NTSC version and don't have a composite AV out. The only way to connect it to TV is via RF channel 95. The game cartridge is also smaller than the NES.
Yes, from what I've read the RGB output on the French NES has to do with them using SECAM rather than PAL. Apparently similar adaptations has been done to other video game consoles there.
The 'NES Version' was released in Britain. There's even an 'Asian Version' that was released in certain countries like India, Portugal and the United Arab Emirates.
Tio tienes la misma consola que mi La NES version española. Lol so I moved to America and I got the European charger for the nes the 220volts or something like that and it doesn't fit in the American plug so I bought an adaptor. But the thing is I think because in America the output for your wall charger is 110volts? Idk but I know it's less. My nes won't turn on. Do you have a fix for this other than buying a complete other new adaptor?
I have a boxed French NES (Duck Hunt set) I bought off eBay a while ago. I have not used it much as I only have the Duck Hunt/SMB1 double cart for it. I would imagine the special AV cable is quite difficult to find by itself; as far as I know the output is exclusive to the French model. I need to disable the lockout chip on it to be able to play my UK carts on it. I also have a UK ("Mattel") NES with the standard RF out, unfortunately there is a fault with it which makes playing difficult!
You got the NES Hong Kong version, it actually says Hong Kong on the front lid. The machine looks the same, but the black areas on the machine are grey and the cartridges are light grey, they have exact same shape as the us/europe version. A UK seller on ebay actually has two of those machines in stock. You also got the Mattel version of the NES, it says Mattel on the front lid.
Never knew about the NES-004E or sneaky two versions of PAL, interesting stuff! ...also I deservedly feel like an idiot for completely forgetting about the AV plugs (in my defence I've never used them on the NES!); would've probably saved me some headache hooking it up to my HDTV the other day via RF. Took a while to get the channels sorted and screen to stop shaking but whatever, got it working fine in the end haha.
I have the Dutch version, which is the exact same as the French one, only it does have the original composite and rf outputs, and blue on the ac input.
Thanks for sharing this. I have the french version of the NES and havent played it yet as im unable to get the rgb output cable. thinking I may trade it in for the uk regional NES.
I have an european version with a Nintendo sticker on the front. On the spot where the text on your console is. Dont know what version it could be. Never saw it somewhere else.
I wasn't either sure first time a saw the french nes if it used the same multi out cable as snes and N64, but sadly it doesn't. I have an SCN nes, so since it has same power plug size as the NA nes will the scn power cable work on an NA nes?
Was wondering about these versions, because mine says "Nes version" on the hatch. Is there a list somewhere with the different versions? Are certain versions more rare or worth more than others? Please let me know.
+makedaevilmage Ones with "NES version" on the hatch are European UK model, I think. At least, my model says that. Ones with "NES version" printed are from the 1990 European manufacturing batch when Nintendo took over production. Not sure about the rarity though. Edit: Or it could be Italian.
+makedaevilmage in addition to the NES version, the UK also received, in early days, the "Mattel version" which is, for the most part, the same as the NES version.
So, i bought a store test/show model that was never used. It looks like a USA version. But i live in belgium, it has the same ports but it uses a european adapter and it plays PAL games. But also USA games. It hase never bean opend/modded.
The French version was arguably superior. I hate to admit it. The composite sync RGB signal is still a shitload better than the composite or RF signal you can get from any other model.
***** I remember reading recently that it wasn't RGB, just a composite signal via a SCART cable. Seems I got it rather wrong in the above comment. I rather hate Nintendo, admittedly the NES being composite only was a step above its predecessors, but Sega went all out on each of their consoles.
Strange..I have an american model in europe huh.. (note that my nes wasn't a recent purchase, it was actually bought when the nes was still beeing produced)
Theres also the Brazillian version, but i think it wasn't much different from the American version, even the box of the console wasn't translated to portuguese
Jão8bits in Brazil theres clones systens someones very good than nes , heres are nes of playtronic do Brasil the same product of usa with system ntsc on my country officially nes released in 1994
The frensch nes is the most gimmick one, because of it's rgb output, but too bad it's just fake rgb,do frensch tv sets lack composite input??? I would be not serprised about that.
The end of the cable that connects to it is composite, it's just like a snes cable just that it's formed a bit differently. ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/517ambtzFuL.jpg
+johneygd French TVs don't lack a composite input but they use the SECAM colour system, so instead of creating an entire new board revision with complex circuitry to output a SECAM system they simply replaced the RF modulator with a PAL to RGB separator, since virtually all European TVs have a Scart RGB input that was the easiest solution for Nintendo.
Jag har en fransk rgb kabel ligandes råka få en extra när jag köpte ettnes ått min mamma och råka få en med en extra om du vill ha :) Sen när det gäller ström plugen så har mitt europeiska nes den blå med :)
I must say NES wasent really succesufull in europe cause well Sega Realsed master system earlier so yeah sega won in eruope also same goes for mega drive
