In August 1989, 600 East Germans stampeded through a border gate operated by Hungary into Austria in what was known as the "Pan European Picnic". Normally overstayers would be sent back to East Germany on specially chartered planes but the "picnic" ,due to be held in the border crossing town of Sopron, was seen as a way of testing the Soviet response to the open border with Austria that would allow Soviet citizens to cross without permission from East Berlin. Leaflets in German were distributed in camping sites frequented by the east Germans with instructions on how to get to Sopron. On August 19 the first East Germans arrived and ignoring the beer and sausage on the Hungarian side, immediately rushed through the still guarded border gate with many abandoning their cars and possessions. 661 crossed. The Hungarian minister Nemeth recalled: " I was in my office all day. I was nervous. Luckily there was no knocking on my door by the Soviet Ambassador, no telephone calls from Moscow". In East Germany, the government thundered about counter revolution and imperialism but no action was taken against Hungary. The border was closed after 4 hours and 6900 East germans were prevented from joining the 660 who had crossed. Prime Minister Nemeth was fearful of Kremlin retaliation but at the same time the picnic had shown him how desperate people were to get to the free west. On 22 August 1989 he flew to west Germany and met Chancellor Kohl where he stated that no East German refugees would be deported back to the east and all would be free to leave. On 11 September 30,000 East Germans fled into Austria and by 17 October Erich Honecker was relieved of his post by the Kremlin. This is the real, courageous Hungary, not the appeasing, colluding Hungary of 2024 and Viktor Orban.
