In this video, we are going to be looking at the three different O-ring options we provide for Europress. These are available in EPDM, FKM (Viton), and HNBR (Nitrile) elastomeric material.
Let’s take a look at the specifications:
- These seals are all available in sizes from 15mm to 108mm diameter. The EPDM and Viton seal options are also available to suit Supersizes 139.7mm and 168.3mm diameter.
- When Europress fittings are ordered, they will be supplied with O-rings already inserted into the fittings. For Europress Stainless Steel and Carbon Steel, these are supplied standard with an EPDM seal, however these can be exchanged for Viton seals at the time of purchase, if required for the intended application.
- The Europress Gas piping system is supplied with a HNBR seal, specifically recommended for gas applications.
EPDM Seals:
- The black EPDM seals are our standard seal for Europress fittings. This seal is rated for applications with temperature between -20℃ to +95℃, and can handle temperature spikes up to 120℃.
- However in saying that, we recommend considering Viton seals for applications over 80 - 85℃.
- These O-rings are suitable for potable water, heating and cooling, firefighting, and other general applications.
- Our EPDM seals have a special LBP (leak before press design), for sizes from 15mm to 54mm. It has a polygonal shape with a series of tubular sections that have a straight axis and a consistent cross-sectional shape. The sections are arranged in a ring shape, creating multiple flows between the O-ring and its sealing surface. This special feature of this O-ring ensures that when a joint has not been pressed, it will leak even at low pressure. So if the fitting is not properly pressed or sealed, it allows water or air to escape, making it visually evident that the seal has not be pressed correctly. However, once the fitting is pressed correctly, it closes off all these pathways ensuring a complete air and watertight seal.
Viton Seals:
- The green FKM seals (also commonly known as Viton seals) are recommended for applications such as compressed air, and higher temperature extremes for example hot water and solar systems.
- They are also often used for applications with oils, and some hydrocarbons, and have superior resistance to many chemicals.
- They have a seal temperature rating of -20℃ to +120℃, and can handle short term temperature spikes of up to 180℃.
- Both the EPDM and Viton seals can be used with the Europress Stainless Steel and Carbon Steel piping systems.
- The EPDM and Viton seals are certified to comply for use with Europress fittings according to a range of different standards including AON/ ASME B31.3 and Watermark.
HNBR Seals:
- The yellow HNBR seals are a Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber.
- The beneficial properties of this material, mean it has low vibration noise transmission, low permeability to gases, and volatile compounds, good ozone resistance, and low compression set at high temperatures.
- HNBR is specifically used in the Europress Stainless Steel Gas Piping System, which is designed and approved to the safe and efficient distribution of flammable and inert gases.
- The recommended temperature range for this material and its broad range of uses is between -20℃ to +70℃.
- HNBR seals are approved to the Gas Standard AS/NZS 5601.1.2013 and DVGW VP639.
