Winner of Eurosong and Eurovision Song Contest 1996. You either love or hate this song, I think now as I have got older, I can see why it won it's a very haunting and meaningful song.
Now this is an irish song worthy of euro vision. Not the shite we send these days.this song blew the competition out of the water.i remember watching this and saying to myself "that is the winner" and it turned out to be
Eimear Quinns voice has a child like innocence and this what makes her version of this song work. Celtic Women are excellent performers. How ever there is difference in the frequency when listening as well as watching both singers perform. Eimear Quinn version of this song is The Voice of childlike innocence that lives within us all.
I think if it wasn't for mainly music in Norway song nocturne that would be a brilliant competition for this amazing song I agree with you this is the best ever song
As soon as heard this quite few years back now I was entchanted by eimiars voice and knew instantly it was a winner ss did many at the time and I asked this cd for xmas which I got I still have now amazing singer and great song
An viele Gewinner des ESC kann ich mich nicht mehr erinnern. Aber dieses Lied läuft bei mir auch nach fast 30 Jahren noch regelmäßig in meiner Song Liste. unvergessen. Eimear ❤
Loved it then, love it even more now. This is what our entries to eurovison should be about. Anyone should be able to hear the song and beable to say "that's irish"
This song represents to me 'My Ireland' the land I grew up in and was proud to be a part of. Naive child I was. This is unfortunately is a far cry from today both in the shite they are putting in for the eurovision every year now and also how this land has become, Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any more mythical mystical Ireland. Its all gone to hell. probably never to return. Well done Eimear in 96, and thanks for the wonderful memories, your song always brings me to happy times
She's meant to embody to country, she is to be interpreted as "the voice" who could bring the country peace (1996 - during the Northern Ireland troubles)- it relates back to the feminine association of nationalism, really powerful.
Uhm.. no. Look at Germany who won with Lena in 2010 ! It prooves that any country can still win with a sufficent strong song & performance. Reason Ireland is placing so bad lately is because they never send these kind of new agey/folk masterpieces anymore.
I love this version. It's modest and has a better essence to it. Celtic Women's version is far too grandiose. We deserved first place and the people who were moaning about us winning were just pissed off because not only were we the country to win the most in the 90's but we've won it seven times, the most times anyone has ever won it.
I'm not an expert in music, but the lyrics are great and her voice is so damn good, and I loved this song very much that the moment I discovered youtube it was the first thing I was looking for
this vesion is better then another one on youtube she and the violin have a hard time to bring out the note at 1.00 with the word free. But in this version its simply beautiful. i know why it won and stilll think its better then most eurovision participents ever
alot of the celtic songs are combinations of old songs + new covers and english versions.. anyway personaly i think there is no doubt that the celtic womans have ones of the greatest voices the world will ever see
220,000 thousand views???? Today's eurovision songs have a few million views on youtube... that only proves how people don't even know about this gorgeous piece of art. That's soo sad, cuz THIS is waaay better then today's esc. People should know about this.... the moment when she sings the first tone, it's just amazing... and the voice is just too beautiful.
Eimear has been doing choral singing since she was 4yrs & has been formally trained. She was with the celtic chamber quire anuna. brendan Graham who wrote this found her while singing in st patricks cath in Dublin. she needed to change the way she sings to perform this song so its not quite her element. She writes, sings & performs on several albums..you should hear her voice on "through the lens of a tear" its like heven.
definently, although irish myself i don't usually rate this type of music (i'm more a fan of 60s and 80s music myself), but this song is definently a stunner. absolutely spellbinding
let it not be forgotten that on this performance Eimear Quinn was suffering from a cold and still sounding haunting! One of our best songs ever - makes me proud to be irish but of course i'm always proud of that lol
I had only heard the celtic women version up until now. I've got to admit, this is very competitivecompared to that, and I don't know which one i'd choose. I think that the slightly lighter voice in this one makes it better.
@pon3ccri Ye me too as i stated originally. love the song but Riverdance blew everyone away that year. and thats why we won. not that the song could not have stood up alone but it didn't need to.
Lisa Kelly's voice along with her grace and beauty has captured this song. Her incredible cover sets the standard for every comparison...including Eimear.
