@ESCsince1968 The UK did give votes to Ireland prior to that in 67 but I agree with you re the analysis stuff which is kind of my point too that there are too many myths about voting rivalries that don't stand up to scrutiny. A lot of Brits think they never got points from France but that's not the case either. Funnily enough, I also hated Rock Bottom at the time - but I think it's absolute quality now! Definitely going soft in my old age...

Delbert Dando i’ve done some analysis of the 1990s and it has shown that France’s favourite country in the 1990s (calculating through averages) is actually the United Kingdom!!

Thanks for the 12 points Luxembourg + Portugal! Lol UK gave Ireland 12 while they gave us nothing, What a gasp when Greece only awarded us 1 pt.

+Jack Walker And the funny thing is, that 1 point was retracted after the show, as it turns out Greece gave points to one more country than allowed. Just goes to show how the performance order of voting didn't work.

@MrEurocat Yes! But far more significant was that in exceedingly good taste the UK awarded 12 pts to Ireland for the first time ever (& one of the few)

Greece did not want to win at Eurovision 1977, because the Greek public broadcaster ERT said that Greece was reluctant to host Eurovision as it did not have a stadium to host the contest.

The crowd don't seem to mind so much that the UK is in the lead for the second year running, do they? (Gotta love the faces Lindsey Lohan is pulling). Angela Rippon's French doesn't reach far beyond the cards she was given either. And, Mr Clifford Brown seems to come out of a reverie - Oh yeah, the Netherlands were missing a point! A little slow on the mind that year, huh?

@ESCsince1968 "one of the few"?! I'm Irish but I have to say this notion that the UK never awarded us points is a myth. Ireland has received more points from the UK than any other country and that includes the 6 times the UK has awarded Ireland 12 points.

@ESCsince1968 OK thanks. Out of interest to stats anoraks like me the position was the same prior to televoting. UK was our top points benefactor (four 12s). This wasn't reciprocated by us at all, we were down the list of UK's points friends behind many others. We were particularly stingy with the UK in the 70s (3 pts in 75 & UK came 2nd; 3 pts in 76 & UK won; no pts in 77 & UK came 2nd). As you say, it's changed since televoting but Ireland is still just behind Austria in UK points benefactors

@dmce1 As I said previously this is a tale of many angles and different levels. If you just base analysis on votes over all the years we fairly cancel each other out. But to do that alone doesnt take account of vastly different voting systems which produce different effects. Differences in musical tastes (just look at the very different types of songs we tend to send to ESC), but also the types of songs either countries voted for.

Greece gave two times four points???? Four to Austria and four to Spain?
@tasosk3

No, I did - it's on the next part of my vote :-)

Hey you're right - looks like the scrutineers weren't the only ones to make mistakes! Somebody at the Greek HQ apparently needed to brush up on their maths... Again, this is why the ascending order of points beats the running order.

Hehehe that's what I thought when the greek voting ended. Haven't they voted for too many countries? Good heavens, good people, they were anxious to vote for all participants. Rather overexcited.

@dmce1 You must put the my comment into context of sparring that goes on between MrEurocrat & myself. To be fair to the UK when Irish songs have done well they have usually award us high marks. Ireland & the UK voting for each other is a tale with many angles. Since the advent of televoting both countries have tended to vote for each other consistently (sometimes for obvious reasons). And I readily acknowledge that this year the UK ensured our passage to the final and that we werent 2nd last.

ESCsince1968 You are completely correct, though with one massive exception. When Ireland won in 1996 with The Voice, it received NOTHING from the United Kingdom.

I notice that our Scotish friend never berated you for Greece's paltry un point a la Royume Uni as he has done to others, especially as it must have seriously contributed to the UK relegation to 2nd place.

As a Greek I hate this song of the UK, it's dated even for 1977 and has nothing to say at all. It's one of these indeserved UK 2nd places for which the Brits are paying all those last places nowadays (bad as well!). I am pretty surprised that they gave even this one point.

@dmce1 I find perplexing Ireland's lack of votes for the UK in some years when they had good songs (not 77 tho - I still think it a woeful song). But do consider that in the 60s the UK only voted for Ireland once - in 69 when we sent our first upbeat song.
@ESCsince1968
@ESCsince1968 14 лет назад
@dmce1 Indeed there are many 'myths' out there about how many countries vote for others (Germany, Austria & Switzwerland for instance). But one should examine any year in terms of the line up of songs. 1975 IMO is the greatest line up of songs ever & many good ones would not get into a jurors top 10. If I had been a juror in 75 none of the first 3 would have got votes from me, so the UK low vote from Ireland doesnt surpise me.
