DUDE , SHOW THE VIDEO & STOP YAPPING! DO YOU KNOW WHO THE EURYTHMICS ARE?! BETTER YET DO YOU KNOW WHAT EURYTHMICS MEANS ? IT IS A FRENCH WAY OF USING YOUR VOICE AND BODY TO INTERPRET MUSIC. IT'S QUITE APPARENT YOU DON'T KNOW SQUAT ABOUT ANNIE LENNOX AND DAVE STEWART. ANNIE MADE THE DECISION TO USE THIS FRENCH TECHNIQUE OF MUSICAL INTERPRETATION. THEY ARE CONSIDERED THE MOST POPULAR AND SUCCESSFUL DUO IN MUSIC. NOT ONLY THAT, ANNIE DID A VIDEO WITH THE QUEEN OF SOUL-ARETHA . SONG? "SISTERS ARE DOING IT FOR THEMSELVES." AS FOR THE " GENDER THING," YOU SAY YOU LIKE, WELL YOU WILL NOTICE THAT EUROPEAN DRESS& MUSIC STYLES ARE UNIQUE TO US AMERICANS WHO ARE SO BLAND,BUT EUROPEANS KNOW STYLE. ANNIE LENNOX IS THE WHITE SOUL SISTER FROM ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND. ARETHA DOES NOT SING WITH JUST ANYBODY. I SPEAK AS A PROFESSIONAL RECORDING ARTIST: SINGER ,SONGWRITER AND GUITAR PLAYER. THERE ARE ONLY 3 YRS DIFFERENCE IN AGE . DAVE STEWART HEARD MY VIDEO UNBEKNOWN TO ME, HE SHOWED UP TO AN AUDITION SET UP FOR ME BY NAOMI CAMPBELL'S MANAGER. I showed up 20min late and was yelled at by this woman who wanted to manage me. I decided to be my own manager. I walked out of Columbia Records twice. The music business, ESPECIALLY if you're a female artist will chew you up like a wood-chipper. ANNIE LENNOX WENT SOLO WITH HER ALBUM , " DIVA," THEN, "MEDUSA", BARE, AND SONGS OF MASS DESTRUCTION " ET AL.SHE BECAME THE FIRST AND ONLY WOMAN TO WIN AN OSCAR, ANNIE HAS EVEN SUNG AT THE VATICAN! LOOK, TO KNOW REAL MUSIC, YOU MUST UNDERSTAND THERE IS NO ONE LIKE ANNIE LENNOX, THE SOUNDTRACK OF MY LIFE AND, I'M NOT ALONE IN THIS OPINION; THE WORLD KNOWS WHO ANNIE LENNOX IS PUBLICLY, BECAUSE SHE'S A PRIVATE, DOWN TO EARTH PERSON. THE DIVA OF DIVAS! ¿COMPRENDE? NO ONE DOES IT BETTER. DELIVERY IS EVERYTHING.

Probably one of the greatest songs of the 80’s- with absolutely no chorus. And- androgyny was all OVER the place in the 1980’s. I love your reactions!! The 1980’s were a stellar decade for music!!

It's so interesting to see people react to songs that have always been part of the soundtrack of our lives. This song is 80's pop perfection. As a teenager in the 80's MTV peak, I can't imagine these type songs not having always been there. They are truly part of our DNA.

Annie Lennox has once of the most Iconic, recognizable voices of all time! Powerful & Beautiful! You know who it is from the 1st word! Check out "Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves" to hear not only Annie, but Aretha Franklin! Another very distinct & recognizable voice! The 2 together is Pure Magic!! Many people who can sing & do it well can be confused with many. Having this very "Distinct" voice is very, very rare indeed!

The synth is _pulsating_ ... And alongside Annie's peerless vocals, no wonder this is still a song to be reckoned with. I remember wearing my Dad's wedding suit out to a posh event with my Mum shortly after this video came out (he was a skinny bugger). My Dad refused to come out with us, and there was a big row about it. I think he still hasn't recovered. 😂 I'm not gay, but I just adored Annie and her style... I'd never seen anyone like her before. 🖤

Great song, Great vocals. I love that you see how important the instrumentals are. Arrangement seems simple by todays standards but sounds like these were really groundbreaking at the time. Love how heavy the base comes in on the 4th beats. Soundtrack of my youth :)

This was a great place to start w/ Eurythmics (Dave & Annie) and Annie solo. This was their 1st hit in the US. They were in the forefront of using synthesizers. The 1st I'd heard except for a few pieces on other songs but Eurythmics were all synths in the beginning. I saw them on their 1st American tour in DC and it was just the 2 of them surrounded by equipment. Continue their journey... it's pretty amazing. They became HUGE together and Annie continues to put out amazing stuff!

i was 13 when this song was released. it's one of the few songs that i remember exactly where i was when i first heard it. i'd come home from school, turned on MTV, and when they played this video i stopped everything I was doing and just watched with my jaw dropped in awe over their sound and Annie Lennox. it's hard to appreciate today but nobody had ever seen or heard anything like Annie Lennox before. A white woman, dressed like a man, who sounded like a black woman. the whole package just slayed everything. the next day all my friends were talking about that video in school. 1983 is when the 80s exploded to being the decade we all remember it to be. And Eurythmics are part of the reason why.

The Bearded Seeker I was 15 and it blew my mind to see a woman dressed as a man and it opened my eyes to the possibility of confirming I was gay. ...so many mixed emotions about hiding my secret...catholic school in religious Ireland where you never heard anyone talking about being gay or what it even was even about. so Annie opened my eyes and my heart to other possibilities. A big influence in my early development which I am always grateful for.

We're the exact same age. Yes. This video was so striking, so ground breaking. I remember the orange hair and male suit almost made me a little uncomfortable but it was so cool! MTV was really hitting it's stride. SO much good stuff coming out. All the concept videos of that period were like four minute movies that mesmerized young minds. Dereck, since you are so into synths you HAVE to listen and watch the video for “Love Is A Stranger” and also “Here Comes The Rain Again”. BTW, Annie is amazing, however, Dave Stewart is a brilliant producer and real innovator. He’s also produced many other artists as well including the song “Don’t Come Around Here No More” which was a huge hit for Tom Petty

Another for the nerds: The “cowbell” is actually glass milk bottles filled with water and hit with sticks and put through a spring reverb. They didn’t have the right sound on the drum machine so they did that inventive thing. Drums: movement drum machine (mk1) Bass synths: Roland sh101 The string synth where they play the cellos is a borrowed Oberheim OB-X. They ran long cables to that guys workshop down stairs to play his piano for the “hold your head up” part.

Love Eurythmics - you should try the version of this from the Grammy's when Annie performs as a man. I'm old - and I remember when this song came out - and I was in art school. We were obsessed with this song - and her look in the video. As I recall - the album this song was on was pretty synth driven - with Dave Stewart driving that. They did a lot of great songs. Check out "Would I Lie to You" - a little later song with a really Motown groove. Kind of funny that you think this sounds 90's - there were many groups in the 80's that had a synth driven sound. Yaz was a lesser known group that had one good album - amazing voice and very synth driven.

regarding the sounds, you should listen to the entire album and an earlier one called In The Garden, and a couple of early Eurythmics but, definitely those first two. the layering of sounds is amazing and best heard very closely with headphones. As a teen growing up in the 80s I really enjoy this channel as you discover some of the great music of that era. Your 🧡 of synth makes me smile and I wanted to give you a few suggestions. The band, A Flock of Seagulls, is going to be a must listen if you aren't already aware of them and early Duran Duran has nice synthetic pieces as well.. Prince's early stuff is very synthetic driven as well. Find and read the story of Stevie Nicks song, Stand Back, and how it and Purple Rain are connected. It is synth legend. Good 80s stuff. Keep up the excellent content , sir.

Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart wrote the song after the Tourists had broken up and they formed Eurythmics. Although the two of them also broke up as a couple, they continued to work together. They became interested in electronic music and bought new synthesizers to play around with. According to Stewart, he managed to produce the beat and riff of the song on one of their new synthesizers, and Lennox, on hearing it, said: "What the hell is that?" and started playing on another synthesizer, and beginnings of the song came out of the two dueling synths.

This song is so popular that it would be strange if you never heard it before. They have many other great songs. My suggestions : Here comes the rain again, There must be an angel, Love is a stranger, Thorn in my side.

Hey, Dereck! There's a lot to choose from within the Eurythmics discography. You can also explore other songs from them such as Never Gonna Cry Again, Love Is a Stranger, Here Comes the Rain Again, Who's That Girl, Would I Lie to You, There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart), Thorn in My Side, Missionary Man, Beethoven (I Love to Listen to), You Have Placed a Chill in My Heart, Angel, The King and Queen of America, etc. In regards of her solo stuff you have tracks like Why, No More I Love You's, Little Bird, among others. However, my #1 Annie Lennox song is Walking on Broken Glass. The video is also quite fun to watch and it starts John Malkovich and Hugh Laurie (Dr. House).

Dave Stuart was the other half of the duo you see on video, synth writer, and producer.

We really were pretty hip back in the 80's. Invented PCs and music videos among other things. ;)

aahhh the androgenous 80's. this was one of their break-out songs, & she & Dave Stewart were together then. she actually had long sandy hair just before this video, apparently. the synth sound was through a break-through og piece of digi kit, called the Fairlight. it enabled people to sample & layer properly for the first time. Peter Gabrielle pioneered it first, then them & Kate Bush ("btw running up that hill" would be a rad reaction to do!). i was a kid then, but was always into any morsel of info i could get on all kinds of music. Annie has such a rad voice. you should also check out Marilyn Mansons version. super goth-morose take, but still makes sense in a Manson esque way :-)

The shorter version that she sang in front of Cohen. He later said "We can put that song to rest now!".
