The important thing to remember about trailblazers like Annie Lennox - nothing had ever sounded like this (or looked like this) before. Others have copied - she's an original.
Her and Laurie Anderson. Something about a woman in a suit, who cuts her hair in the dark (just start talking on the phone, don't really pay attention to what you're doing).
In other interviews Eurythmics said the cows represent Nature, which stays the same, its humans that want to change everything, always "looking for something". Dave said he wanted people to remember the videos that's why he put the cows in. It was his idea.
@@MattSingh1 Your comment shows you know dick about music and to say what you said about probably the greatest all-time frontman in music history , tells all of us a lot about what kind of person you really are ......
This song reminds me of my grandma. When this came out, my grandma was in her 70's. She came over and was talking about liking that new "cream cheese" song. Had no idea what she was talking about. Anyways, a few weeks later, she was over and this song was on my radio and she started singing "cream cheese is made of these". We had a good chuckle when I told her what they were saying. So now every time I hear this, or use cream cheese, it brings back warm memories of her and still brings a smile to my face.
Omg Annie is not wierd,it was the early 80s when music videos were all the rage ,you know mtv was only like four years old at the time of this video. Annie Lennox has one of the most beautiful voices still to this day. There are alot of suggestions in your comments and all of them are great choices so I won't repeat....but Marilyn Manson does not do a better version of this song .....♡
She sounds great in this, but if you really want to see what she's capable of check out here solo work. Things like "Why", which is just amazing. She has one of the most wonderful set of pipes in the biz.
@@gregjames9875 Old Benetar, maybe. Haven't heard anything recent, so I can't say. Annie definitely has more emotional range than Benetar. Wilson is closer, but I think Lennox beats her out, too. My older brother would disagree, he's a huge Ann Wilson fan.
The Eurythmics had a lot of hits, including Here Comes The Rain Again, Missionary Man. One largely forgotten song was a feminist themed collaboration with Aretha Franklin = Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves
@@SpaceCattttt It was huge 33 years ago when it was released. An entire generation has been born, grown up, and having children since then. If people were asked to list Eurythmics or Aretha songs, how many would remember it? "Forgotten" does not refer to 33 years ago. It refers to today.
My son graduated Berklee college of Music in Boston in 2013. Annie Lenox..the singer to the Eurithmix shook his hand as he recieved his degree. She gave a wonderful speech telling all about her life. It was a great listen..her speech is on youtube...Berklee 2013 Annie Lenox
This is one of the most well known songs in the world. There must be over 2000 remixes of it on RU-vid. People all over the globe sing it even if they don't know English. It has also won numerous awards. Sweet Dreams went to #1 in America and #2 in the UK, where Eurythmics have been declared the biggest selling British duo in British music history. Annie Lennox has since went on to win an Academy Award for her song in Lord of the Rings, and has sold over 80 million records. It's incredible that you have only ever heard the song once, and recently. Every one you know is undoubtedly familiar with it.
I had just left San Francisco when this came out. New Wave was all the rage there and I immediately loved it. “Here Comes the Rain Again” and “Would I Lie to You” are good ones, too.
San Francisco in 1984! Fun, fun, fun (for a 23 year old gay man). Still live in NorCal, but rarely go there now. Its just not the same - totally different vibe.
The Eurythmics were the real deal back in the early 80’s. Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart were among the early pioneers of the British New Wave movement and many of their early recordings were made in Dave Stewart’s basement. This might look a bit odd today but back then these guys were pretty cutting edge.
Annie Lennox has an incredible voice; always did. This was the first hit of The Eurythmics, the New Wave duo she was a part of in the 80s. And it was a monster hit. The guy in the video is her partner, collaborator and one-time boyfriend, Dave Stewart. He ended up becoming a world-famous music producer.
For those of you who are Lord of the Rings fans you may remember this: "In 2004, she won both the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Into the West", written for the soundtrack to the feature film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King." I took this from Annie Lennox Wikipedia page.
Annie has an amazing voice! Not to mention, she is a drop-dead BABE! Check out her CD Medusa, cover tracks, but all good ones. She does "Whiter Shade of Pale" which is awesome!
@@robinc7709 Same. Glad someone else said this. I'm a big Eurythmics and Annie Lennox fan but I'd not heard this till coming back on a long flight from holiday. I'm not into the Lord Of The Rings films. I found it on the airlines music entertainment section. Put it on and not sure if it was tiredness or jet lag but I was a wreck after listening to it. It still has the same effect now.
Always amazes me that when she sings, it is in perfect English. Yet when she speaks she has this Scottish brogue, and yes as someone else commented, she has some of the best pipes in the business.
Annie used to scare the life out of me, she was freaky with those icy eyes and that flaming hair. But nowadays I see what a beautiful woman she actually is.
If you get your music discovery from a movie most times, then whatever way is a good way. I'm old school,i learned about great music from my record collection and attending hundreds of concerts. I consider myself very fortunate to be a child of the 60's and soaking up all this musical culture from the greatest era ever.
Hey it's the 75 year old grandma, talking to you for the last time as the 75 year old grandma as I turn 76 years old tomorrow Dec 29th. just saying, anyway if you want to see a great music video, with a great song listen to and watch "take on me" by Ah Ha , it was one of the first music videos made back in the day and received awards, I think you would love it, it's one of my favorites.
@@robertheilmeier2671 Thank you my family is from Germany, my Grandmother Sophia Kenifel Not sure I spelled that right) came to the USA an an immegrent around 1903 or so, and Married my Grandfather John Schabert. I should do a family history some time, and again thanks for the Birthday wishes.
+@@carlajeangilliland70 You are most welcome, thanks for your answer! I assume that the correct spelling might be "Kneifel", that´s a rather seldom albeit very German family name. .:-) On a side note, I have relatives in the US, my aunt emigrated there after she had met her future husband in Munich in the early 60s and she once told me that she accidentally could find quite a lot of hitherto unknown information about our family history in the archives of the Mormons (I guess in Salt Lake City) Apparently you can access these archives without being a Mormon themselve, so this might be a possible source of information for you as well. Best wishes again :-)
I thought that, my friend until........I suddenly realised, ridiculously, that, I,also, am 64 years old and I,literally, continually, forget that. lol I have been single all my life and have known 3 Ladies who I habe, regularly, seen for most weeks all for around 20 years now and they are 40,40 and 38 respectively so, maybe, that is why I feel great, stimulated and youthful..lmao...@ .@PurelyAfrican
Annie Lennox and I share the same birthday 12/25/1954. She is one of my all time favorite vocalists. She has a powerful voice. Agree that Why is one of her best.
Annie Lennox is a legend. For me she's like the female version of Sting. A pathfinder - all others follow. Maybe since her first video I couldn't forget her. That smile is like a riddle: it seems genuine, but the eyes are often ominous, and I don't know what she's up to next. Whatever she is, she's not boring.
I have always loved Annie, she has an amazing voice and is the heart and soul of Eurythmics, they were one of my favorite groups and Annie was the reason why.
When I first heard this song back when it was released in the 80s, as soon as I heard that riff on the pump organ, I turned to my wife and said, "Whatever that is, it will be a smash hit. Who the fuck is that??" - From the opening riff!
@@EMTinVA caught me off guard the first time I heard it and I had a bit of a meltdown. It's good for those gray days when you need to siphon off some grief.
She used to sell Haägen Dasz ice cream in London's city centre. She was a born ice cream seller, but switched in time to music. Listen to her songwriter Dave Stewart ('In this little town') and his duet with Candy Dulfer, instrumental, Candy on sax)
Very 80s. I miss the old MTV days when videos were blossoming genre. It is my understanding that the shot with Dave looking into the cow's eye was a complete happy accident.
Annie Lennox is my favorite female singer--has been since the 80s. That is one soulful Scottish(?) sistuh, right there. Love her voice. It's so sultry. So many good songs she sings on both with Eurythmics and solo. I would recommend you take a listen to "No More I Love You's". That song was sampled on a Nikki Minaj song a few years back but the original is beautiful.
The era being 1983-1984. My dad especially liked this song. MTV years this one. They had a very distinct sound even on radio. Another grade school memory lane song from the summer of first grade. 80's kids got exposed to lots of 60's, 70's, and whatever was going on in the 80's.
The 80's was truly an amazing decade for music and movies! Almost everything was originals and unique! I think it was the golden age... entertainment wise. I will be forever thankful that I grew up when MTV only played music videos! When the video for Michael Jackson's Thriller came out? That was such a huge deal! With just enough rumored controversial about that my parents said no way. I snuck down one morning around 4am to secretly watch...I just realized my parents never found out. To this day. How about that?
Once again as a GenXer I cannot emphasize enough how enigmatic this video was to us at the time. MTV was new and all videos were either weird or cheesy - or, God forbid, both. This o e was weird and cool and the androgynous look that Annie Lennox was rocking just clicked.
I met Annie Lenox about 35 maybe 40 years ago just after thus song came out. She is a delightful kind wonderful woman and very accommodating to me as a 10 year old pestering kid.
They make a point. This world is for the purpose of remembering who you are and bringing that knowing in to your creations. The polarity and contrast will push you toward what you want. Some people experience oppression to realize how precious freedom is and when they've had enough they will change it.
Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart were in another band called Tourist. They were on tour here in Australia and they didn't like the way their careers were going. The two got to talking in a hotel room in a small country town called Wagga Wagga (here in NSW) and decided to form another band - which became Eurythmics - so it can be said that this band was founded in Australia! You should do "Let Forever Be" by The Chemical Brothers
Annie Lennox is truly awesome - along with her make up and outfits. Check her out performing with David Bowie in a tribute concert for Freddie Mercury at Wembley Stadium - starting out with Queen's "Under Pressure" . She has extraordinary makeup and dress and David Bowie is in a great mint green suit. Great performance!
So many wonderful Annie Lennox performances to choose from. I think her appearance at the 25th Anniversary of the Arista Records is one to definitely listen to. type in 'Annie Lennox Why Live 2000'. I'm normally in tears by the time she sings 'This boat is sinking'.
I was thrown for a loop when I first saw this back in the day... had to run out and get it!! Still love the bit with the *cellos* ! Annie Lennox is such an enigma in this video! Beautiful, authoritative, and surreal!
I have never liked watching music videos because I don't like some else's idea's popping into my head . I have found that I enjoy watching you react to them. I am 66 and I love most styles and types of music. I look forward to you viewing some of the current music.Happy and Healthy New Year from Michigan
You are one courageous man to watch this music video, and to react to it. I remember watching this music video on MTV in late-January, 1983. It shocked the hell out of me. I thought to myself, "My God, this is Satan himself in this music video!!!" I was a big fan of Kraftwerk, and their Techno-Pop music, and Eurythmics recorded their own style of Techno-Pop that appealed to me. I bought the album of the same name, and I have been a Eurythmics/Annie Lennox fan ever since.
I knew there was no way in the world you could have escaped that song. It happens every year - a song that is everywhere: think Mmmbop, Two Princes, Uptown Funk or Despacito. There is nowhere to hide. BTW, you should hear Annie Lennox sing "There Must be an Angel".
That song was originally just a jam session and sound check. That's why it's so repetitive. Sound guy liked it and played it to label people who loved it and the rest is history.
This is one of those songs I knew was going to become one of my favorites within the first few bars. As soon as that funky-ass synth bass started, I was looking around at people, ARE YOU HEARING THIS?
The first time I ever heard this was on a Friday night after 8a.m. -2 p.m. at college and 3 to about midnight at work, managing a restaurant. I turned on TBS- a program called Night Flicks- a MTV ish thing. Same old squeaky voiced lead singer. I headed for the shower and suddenly this amazing voice came out of my TV! Oh. My. Gosh! Gorgeous, deep, rich Alto. So rare for a lead singer back then. I was so taken with the voice that I was halfway through the video before I wondered what the he** was going on. Still love sweet Annie. Still have no clue what was going on. Oh by the way, I'm an Alto so I might be a little biased. Nah. She rocks. She sings the song they play over the closing credits on Return of the King.
One of my all time faves. This band is great. Annie Lennox went solo...she is fantastic. Her voice is amazing, imo. Seek her solo albums. Excellent listening.
The combi of an operasinger and a heavymetal guitarist - awesome. I don't like heavy metal, but of this song I bought the record with this number on. wierd but enchanting.
I never figured out the cow either. Annie Lennox is amazing. I was a tween when I first saw her and she (and Freddie) helped me realize that gender wasn’t cut and dried.
Another catchy song with an odd video (I say "catchy" because it's been playing in my head all night) is "Kryptonite" by 3 Doors Down. We have an elderly super hero striving to rescue a young lady who's being abused by an apparent boyfriend. He "chases" them all over town, in the way an elderly man would, and they somehow end up in a bar for retired super heroes and villains. I like the song and I find myself rooting for the old super dude.
Typically when these chart toppers came out back in the day, they showed up everywhere; everybody wanted a piece of the pie until the next new flavor came out. What is surprising to me of the thumbnail list of all videos I have seen you react to, this is the first one where you confess you actually have heard this song before...time to go to the calendar.
