That was a beautifully made video! The scenery was probably a big factor too! I guessed it was the Jacobite you wanted to go on, please, please do a vlog later about it! That will be worth watching!! Thanks for showing this fantastic and interesting series, I'm loving it! Some idiot on Twitter said that people over 35 shouldn't go to music festivals! Well I mentioned I was going to one next month plus a rock concert this month and I'm well over 35! Live in a bubble some of these people, they really do!! Take care, hugs xxx 😘🐕🥰

While riding a steam train is always a trip highlight, I was impressed with the boat trip and the close up of the wildlife on the island. The locals seemed to be waving at you, possibly telling you to go away (they don’t have distinct middle fingers to convey that well) or, as I prefer to assume, they were just waving hello and giving you the ‘seal of approval’.

An Alde heating system can use 3kW, the same as an EV charger. With supply limited to 16A, you have to choose to use one or the other, so there is no additional cost for the campsite charging an EV compared to using that heater. Then how do they justify the £9 for an EV? It would be best if we move to metered connections as it encourages everyone to save energy and leave more capacity for necessary uses, whatever that may be. It should at least get rid of those halogen heaters. We do have to recognise that camp sites have a limited power supply. The supply may not be able to cope with everyone using 16A at the same time. Fabulous video as always. I need to get back to the highlands, even though the weather can be unpredictable.

100% Alex. I think things will have to change - EVs are now forcing an issue that needed addressing years ago. All the best.

We won't be going down the EV route (fixed income pensioners well over 70 who bought brand new diesel just 5 yrs ago), but it's great to see someone really championing the cause. We took the road to Mallaig from Ft William as the Jacobite wasn't running - too early in the season! He road is next to the line almost all the way. We stopped to explore the hillside around Glenfinnan Viaduct - fantastic views. That is a fantastic journey. Loved the steam footage. Cant wait for the full on version on the winter. We also had a fantastic 'up close' with seals but from a lovely little boat at Dunvegan Castle on Skye. Lochs Ness & Morar are also beautiful & we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves around that part of Scotland. Well done Andrew x

Stunning views and presentation on video as ever. Great to see data explained in clear and easy to understand format. As a normal non hookup caravan owner, using solar and lpg, my personal view would be metered sites as the way to go forward. That way it is fair for all.

Well done Andrew. Another great video on EV towing. Really enjoyed it. On the issue of charging on site, fixed price ev pitch charging does discriminate against PHEVs. Towing with a phev, the CAMC £9 rate is a bit steep. My battery is only 9kw compared to a pure EVs 60 to 70 kw, yet we are asked to pay the same fee to charge on a pitch. £1 a kW is a bit steep... Looking forward to the next episode.
@andrewjditton
@andrewjditton 2 года назад
Agreed Peter. My feeling is that this is being done to encourage us to charge off-site. It's possible for an EV driver to get reasonable value from this but you're right, not a PHEV. I think things will be changing just as soon as implementations can be made.

Really interesting video Andrew. I am amazed at the differing regime each club and site has for charging, I am guessing it must have something to do with the power available at each site but I am no expert. Can understand why you have so much footage of the journey between Fort William and Mallaig, stunning area and experience.

I wish all sites with EHU used meters as it would be so much better for the environment and fairer for those of us who are frugal, and those of us in tiny vans who barely draw anything from our EHU. As things stand the pitch prices continue to rise and some of us can no longer afford them. As a side note, you stayed on the same pitch at Bunree as I did - it’s a stunning place isn’t it? I can’t wait to go back. Thanks for another wonderful video Andrew.

Good video of travels in Scotland. I love that Jacobite train, and hope to do it one day. I am planning an extended tour by bicycle of the UK and Scotland in the future. Those seals were brilliant, very camera-focused. They all seemed to scratch on-cue for you. Strange way of doing things with camping and caravans. Do your caravan clubs only provide car camping sites? What about those travelling and camping with a tent? Here in Australia caravan parks generally also provide for camping on unpowered sites (or power too if you need it). The caravan parks are all owned by private operators or many by local councils. We have no caravan clubs who operate exclusive caravan parks. Regarding charging, I expect that in time caravan parks will come to have dedicated fast-charging points for EVs, where you may charge for a fee. Some have even suggested that for the cost of charging, and the benefit of customers, many shopping centres will install fast-charge points at no/low prices just to attract the shoppers. Not sure how this will progress but it is a possible trend.

I think a longer term benefit of sites that charge is that it may encourage them to install better electric supplies to the site. I also suspect that sites that don't allow charging will find their business falling off, before caravan sites this will happen first with the likes of hotels and airbnbs as EV ownership rates increase. I'll be staying next week at a holiday rental that charges £20 a *week* which is very reasonable to my mind, covers their costs (fair enough) and is still substantially cheaper than petrol even if i only 'fill the car up' once though I"ll probably do it twice. One question, at the end of the video you say check with the site when booking in, surely you should check before you go and choose accordingly (same as you'd choose any other facilities?)
@andrewjditton
@andrewjditton 2 года назад
Yes, smarter to check when you book! But some folks book way in advance, and my feeling is that policies are going to change quickly. I think to be fair, for some rural sites it's not an option to upgrade the supply, so they'll need to use the supply they have in a smarter way. Either way, a cultural shift will need to happen soon for sites to remain both viable for the owners and attractive to the users. All the best.

I really liked the Action 391 PD set up. For a single person it's ideal because of the separate dining area and fixed bed. I Googled and found one for sale at €21500 in Germany. It begs the question about import fees to the UK and a VAT refund from Germany?

Outcome 260 km on fully charged battery, my comment: Cannot drive battery flat, so correcred for 10% minimal nett range would be about 230 km Battery performance deteriorates when temperature drop down. Same with age 3%..5% per year. So i prefer PHEV for caravan driving. In future H2 technolgy will be the concept for motorhomes and lorries.

Andrew, are you aware that there is a potential problem with the EV6 shift by wire system, resulting in a recall. The potential fault may cause the EV6 and sister car, the Ioniq 5, to roll down a hill if left parked ? This is not a joke, contact your dealer. Information gained from Transport Evolved.

Hi Patrick, an Airstream would be a tad too heavy for the EV6 (hence me needing to sell mine) but I do have a plan to try some different kinds of trailer, eg caravan vs Eriba vs folding camper. That might have to be next year though, as it will take some organising for one man and a dog ;)

Yes, I can see that you’re not at all bitter about the availability of the Adria in the UK! 😉 I was recently distressed to learn that Kia has reduced the towing capacity for the EV6 to 2300lbs or about 1000kg. I believe that this is because the US uses electric brakes and requires an installed controller in the cockpit. The Hyundai Ionic 5 and upcoming Genesis GV60 are rated only for 2000 lbs or about 900kg. Very disappointed. Dougal is such a good boy and excellent demeanor for caravanning. Safe travels my friend!
@andrewjditton
@andrewjditton 2 года назад
Aha! Thanks for finally explaining that Mark. I did wonder why the discrepancy between the two markets. But I don't understand the logic - surely the outdated overrun braking system used in Europe places MORE stress on the car because it's mechanical, whereas the superior US electric brake system places zero extra stress on the car. I don't get it, but I'm no auto engineer. All the best.

Interesting hearing about the club situation, can non-members use these sites particularly people coming on holiday from overseas? What happens if you want to dump fossil fuels and get a caravan/campervan/RV with all electric and some of the bigger ones have ovens, stoves, heating to deal with so why don't they have 32A outlets as well for those which will arrive at some point? I know in Australia they have some powered sites have 32A outlets available for the larger campervans although I know some EV owners using tents can also use them to charge their EV on and some even have 7-11kW dedicated charging available not at the site but near the office. Though you are right they really need to think about EV's and maybe have sites specifically for EV's like you so 2x32A outlets one for the camper one for the EV so you can at a minimum charge at 7kW if you have a portable 7kW charger, which do exist.

@G-ra-ha-m
@G-ra-ha-m 2 года назад
Wars bring the most pollution IMO. What I find sad is the size of the tyres. Bigger tyres = more energy usage. The Sinclair C5 was too small, but all the EVs are too big. The old Austin 7 is the perfect size for an EV, and 1kW would take you a long way in that.

Sorry David, you lost me at 'Daily Express'! ;@) One thing I've learned is that anyone can pull up a 'statistic' or 'research' to support anything. Hence I just present my findings honestly and without prejudice. We all know that there is no 100% green way to tour with our own vehicle, we should be walking and tent camping. But by taking leisure vehicles and not staying in Air BnBs is way better for local communities that are being desstroyed by second/holiday home ownership... where does it end?

Hey Andrew, we have 12 days holiday. How do you suggest a person gets to Arisaig from Northumberland in an electric car towing a bailey? I love your videos. But come on fella. Realistically come on sir 2 days that could be achieved in one with a full tank of petrol ⛽️

Bottom line is the two big clubs need to move to meters. It is the fairest route. EVs are forcing the debate, but actually it’s something that has been needed for years as outfits and energy use has grown. We are relatively frugal with our electric use yet we often are pitched next to outfits with heating on in awnings 24hrs a day in mid winter, TVs, electric grills, 24hr hot water and enough lights to rival Blackpool illuminations. Don’t get me wrong, I am not criticising this. Everyone’s approach to caravanning is personal and equally valid. But in the end, this extra energy use by some is being subsidised by frugal users and only fair that each pays for their fair share of energy. If that argument is being made for EVs, then it is equally valid for all other uses.

@@andrewjditton just got a call from Kia. Towbar is being fitted early July!!!!!!! Not long now. Can’t wait to tow my Eriba. I hoping the Eriba aero-dynamics might give me an extra range boost.

Thats a childish comment about heaters and awnings, I am all for EV's and I think they are great and I would have one in a heartbeat, But just because someone drives an EV does not entitle them to Special Treatment or Certain Rights of Passage, And if someone wants to heat their Awning that's up to them, You have said many times that you don't have an EV agenda But you Do, Your comments in pt 3 and now here in pt 4 make it very clear, knocking your Nissan's fuel economy, It's a Truck it was never ment to sip the tears of butterflies, My diesel does 64+mpg and towing does 45 to 52mpg, It's not perfect but it is a leasted polluting model on the market in it's class, You have taken all the enjoyment out of your channel with your constant knocking agenda, I get it, You love your EV and So do I, You have to recharge every couple of hours or every day, I can fill up at the start of the trip and refuel to come home again 600 miles later or more if solo. You have ruined your own channel with this constant EV agenda, I suggest you watch some of your old video's and see how much fun they were, it was fun while it lasted.

It's ridiculous to think there are those who would use a halogen heater in the awning, or use any resource recklessly. Not a club member, obviously.

If it's powered by a wind turbine, what's the difference? Where does all this electricity come from?
