I was diagnosed with cancer as well as Linda McCartney about the same time. I had just finished battling cancer when it took Linda and Eva. I sob for her every time I hear and see this video. Listen to Eva's "Autumn Leaves" and "Stormy Monday".
I first heard Eva in 2003-I was on vacation and her album was playing in a gift shop. They weren’t selling her album. I couldn’t wait to get home and buy it. I have ALL of her CDs now and never get tired of listening to them! I LOVED your reaction!
Every time I listen to Eva sing this song I get tears in my eyes, and both sad and angry that this beautiful soul died at such a young age from that demon called cancer.
Judy Garland sung the song from the point of view of the wistful child she played in Wizard of Oz. Eva’s version always feels like a broken adult wishing desperately for a better life, which makes it so much more heartbreaking
You will want to check out Stormy Monday, Autumn Leaves, Fields Of Gold, Time After Time versions done Live at Blues Alley. Other greats are I Know You By Heart, Danny Boy, ohh.just pick one. You will love it. They are masterpieces and master classes. Thank you for sharing.
A great talent gone way too soon! Fortunately she left us some recordings for us to savor. Gems all, a few to react to are; Fields of Gold, and Autumn Leaves. You can’t go wrong with any of her songs recorded at Blues Alley.
Eva does make this her own. Breathtaking. RIP. Israel something I can't remember from Hawaii does a unique version.also very nice.RIP. And the classic Judy Garland from the movie. Lucy Thomas does a beautiful tribute to Eva. Minor changes Lucy style And Lauren Alred does a version where she starts with Israel's version and medolies into Judy's. Very, very good also. And then we have Sydney Christmas who just won one of those competitions singing Lauren's version. In this case it's funny because the show played this when she won the golden buzzer at her tryout. Keep up with the good stuff, thank you.🤠
You're thinking of Iz, Israel Kamakawoole, or some such last name, a Hawaiian artist who did a medley of Over the Rainbow and Wonderful World solo on ukulele that was a world-wide hit. He unfortunately also died at a very young age of complications of morbid obesity.
*crying again* Eva died not too long after this performance. Please listen to Eva's "Autumn Leaves" (acoustic guitar) and her version of "Fields Of Gold" (Sting's song, but he said it belonged to her, once she sang it.) Thank you.
Widely considered as the best cover ever done of this song. Eva is one of the finest singers of all time. She was known as a great blues and jazz singer as well. Check out her catalogue on her RU-vid channel. Gone much too soon from melanoma cancer at 34, 10 months after these recordings done live at Blues Alley. Thank you for keeping her special artistry alive and for your reaction.
Love your reaction! Eva was a tremendous talent that sadly left us far too soon. She passed within a year of this recording. If not for a disc jockey in Britain and her family, she may have passed into obscurity. Thank heavens this performance was recorded and she left a few recordings as her legacy. Beautiful voice. Beautiful soul.
Eva recorded this Jan 3/96 and was diagnosed with melanoma in June, 5 months later and passed Nov 2/96 Sadly most don't even know who she is even though she is one of the greatest singers ever.
also prefer this version yet I think it is too melancholy for the movie-Wizard of Oz which was the original version. Judy Garland also did a beautiful job.
This is an unbelievably emotive interpretation of Over the Rainbow, especially considering her story. I want to point out her phenomenal guitar artistry - she created this arrangement for both voice and guitar. For another side of Eva, check out her interpretation of Stormy Monday on electric guitar. She kills it.
No, there's no better version of this song than this. At least, I've never heard one better. She made it her own. She changed the mood the melody the rhythmic flow. It's darker, more emotional. I cry every time I hear this version, and I don't care, she deserves at least some of my tears.
Thank you for your reaction. I agree Eva's version is the most beautiful. You may want to listen to her cover of Fields of Gold ... even Sting said it was better
This is the perfect time of year to listen to her "Autumn Leaves". Since I first heard the song many years ago, it comes to me at the first sign of falling leaves and stays till Winter.
