We take you behind the scenes as we try to make Korean Army Stew, a dish we both love, for the first time together. Enjoy our fun-filled cooking session with soju and wine as we add our own interpretation to this iconic dish. We also experiment with a couple of cheeses to find the best one for Budae Jjigae.
Budae Jjigae, or Korean Army Stew, is a unique fusion dish that emerged after the Korean War. It blends Korean flavours with surplus ingredients from US military bases, such as Spam, hot dogs, and baked beans. The dish typically includes kimchi, ramen noodles, gochujang (Korean chilli paste), and American cheese, creating a hearty and flavourful stew. Often cooked communally at the table, Budae Jjigae symbolises resourcefulness and cultural integration, making it a popular comfort food in modern Korean cuisine. This dish embodies both historical significance and contemporary appeal, offering a nostalgic yet innovative dining experience.

I don't get it, this is such an underseen underrated channel! I have probably subscribed when the number was in hundreds. I hope Algorithm will be kind to this channel! Love the vids! I'd request more recipes without meat, only if possible

The American cheese has melting salts in it, that helps it not curl up in boiling water, unlike most other cheeses. If you'd added low moisture mozzarella for example, it would have curled up and been chewy. This stew looks really tasty

a more simple version of this could be -Spam -smoked sausage -kimchi -gochijang -green onion -onion -mushrooms -one package of ramen (shin ramen prefered) -American cheese -chicken broth. You really cant skip the gochujang, kimchi, american cheese, smoked sausage and ramen. those are the real stars i think of this dish, all the places ive had budaejigae has those 5 at their core. The rice cakes are a big bonus if you can find em, and instant dashi/dasida powder is great to add to the chicken broth if you can source it. The potato noodles or like japche noodles are also great if you can find em but ramen gets you most of the way

This cooking video is fun and educational. I love it when Shaulan said “Evan, you are drinking slowly” 😂 I will make this dish. Can I use chicken stock? I am thinking about boiling the wings, bacon, Italian anchovies, and herbs to make the chicken broth. This channel deserves more viewers. The W2 Kitchen community, please add your comments and smash the like button, it will help with the algorithm. Thank you, Evan and Shaulan!
