I was one of the photographers ring side at this fight. Holyfield had his hands full, but what an exciting fight to have your elbows on the ring shooting history. You can see me just as the fight started in a wide shot loading film in a chair with a brown plaid shirt on.
Wow. What a great fight. And what a tough debut for Holyfield. In his 13th fight he would compete for a cruiser weight championship. 2 years from this fight. Like he predicted. And he will become a heavyweight champ, like the commentator predicted.
Holyfield was a great heavyweight champion...I think he could have possibly been the best pound for pound fighter in history as a cruiserweight/light-heavy.(though he already weighed in above LH limit in this fight) Cruiserweight, unfortunately, never became too much more than the AAA feeder for heavyweight as eventually, light-heavy did as well. Could you imagine a fight between Holyfield and Moorer at LH or Cruiser? I'd give it to Evander by mid/late-round KO but would have been fireworks reminiscent of Hagler/Hearns . What a difference 10 inherent pounds makes.
Not sure if I read it right, but I briefly remember reading Holyfield’s biography years ago. He stated that his manager or promoter didn’t scout correctly in his debut fight. Setting him to fight a much tougher opponent than anyone would ever debut against. He fired either his manager or promoter directly after this fight
Yes. Holyfield was a light-heavyweight for the first few bouts of his career (in non-title bouts, you are allowed to come in a few pounds over the official limit.) When it became clear that he would have to really drain himself to make 175, he moved up to cruiserweight, where he won the world championship in 1986, and unified the titles in 1987 and 1988. He never had any trouble making the cruiserweight limit of 190, so his move up to heavyweight in 1988 was strictly for the challenge/glory and the financial rewards that came with it.
SSD WIRED what do you mean they were in different weight classes of course they couldn’t fight if you know anything about boxing you’d know what I mean
