i'm missing Eve, it's been two years i've read "eve's hollywood" and it was such fun. it's packed with shorties betwen her (literally) hollywoodian childhood in the 50s to her life in Italy in the 70s. i remember especially a chapter about schoollife around hollywood, dating surfers after class, mexican students gangs, popular girls.... she just takes us with her. i didn't know about "i used to be charming" but i know i'll love this one too. i'll make a time for it. by the way, her lifestyle and élan reminded me a lot of peggy guggenheim. if you come across some of her biographies, don't think much, just go for it.

Babitz is one of my favorite non fiction writers. She was not only chronicling the death of the cities you mentioned, Babitz recorded America before the Regean Era arrived and destroyed all the 70s hedonism with its "Morning in America" attitude. And we know how that ended up.

I finished it last year, can’t say that I “got” the whole story after the first read through, but bits and pieces of passages throughout were amazing and I still think about the book even a year later. It seems like a book that is a treasure trove of brilliance that is always a bit out of reach from where you’re at. Hope you enjoy!

I was a big fan of these reviews but I can't see how anyone can take them seriously anymore when Cliff now only reviews books given to him by his sponsor, NYRB, and only gives said sponsor's books positive reviews. Also he then puts links to the books his sponsor is selling, which he just positively reviewed, as always, below in his videos' description box and asks viewers to purchase from the link because he gets a cut of the sales. It just seems like the amount of conflict of interest and vast potential for bias has gotten ridiculous. It's a shame, I used to love these reviews, but Clifford Lee Sargent went from being a book reviewer to a book salesman.
@ahbooks3
@ahbooks3 3 года назад
I’m not completely sure how it works, but I do think publishers contact creators beforehand and ask them which books they’re interested in reading/reviewing or they send them books they think the content creator will like. A lot of large book tube channels get sent a lot of new releases/ ARCs and they don’t tend to positively review all of them or even read them.
@alext7621
@alext7621 3 года назад
In his defense, the people at NYRB have some of the best taste in the industry. They clearly have a deep love for literature-particularly for great books that have been overlooked in the mainstream literary discourse-and are very meticulous with what they choose to publish. Obviously, each reader will like some of their books more than others, depending on that reader’s particular tastes and preferences, but, at least in my experience, I’ve never encountered an NYRB book that wasn’t at least a worthwhile read. Perhaps Cliff just really likes what they publish. I know I do.
@seamusmichaelhogan3462

Channel description is "Personal opinions on books that are better than food." Personally I love that most reviews on the channel are of books the Cliff likes and would recommend. Who wants to watch the vid only to find out the book sucks and shouldn't be read? Life is too short to read bullshit.
@joni1405
@joni1405 3 года назад
What are you talking about? I just looked at his last 10 reviews and it appears that 2 of them were from NYRB. Maybe 25% of his books are from NYRB which doesn't strike me as a bizarre percentage from a sponsor. He had a stretch like 6 months ago where it looks like he did a bunch of NYRB books in a row, but it's definitely not true that he only reviews books from NYRB. Also: I've never read a book from NYRB that I thought was bad so the fact he gives them positive reviews also doesn't strike me as a weird tendency
