I bought two and have had them for a year. Here’s my take: Pros: -Small -Beautiful minimalist design -Links with Apple HomeKit -Accurate temperature reading Cons: -Loses connection with HomeKit at random times and has to be reset or removed as an accessory and added back as a new accessory. -Eats through batteries quickly. -The readout on the unit is very difficult to see. -Celsius is the default reading, and must go into the Eve app to change to Fahrenheit.
Good review, I was hoping someone would do one on this. I had two of the previous Eve Degree, I found the performance good for temperature and humidity accuracy. However battery life was not as advertised and it was within 20 feet of my indoor HomePod. I will say Eve had a very good warranty, I mentioned the battery drain issues and they sent me one without questions, same with my Eve Aqua. It was very easy to setup temperature based automations in the app with more detail than you can in the home app being able to automate devices. I have since moved these indoors and use in my kids rooms to automate their humidifiers. I have moved to the Netatmo as it is a more complete weather station as I have added on the rain and wind gauges. However only the indoor and outdoor modules have HomeKit opened up. That said, the trade off is I do not have a screen on the Netatmo which was a nice feature of the Eve Degree. I am sure thread with the Eve weather will help fix the battery issues of the previous generation.
Good stuff as usual Eric. I just did a temperature sensor project within my HomeKit system. Mine involved the GPIO pins from my HomeBridge RPi, hand-built cabling, conversion to cat-6 - and some DHT22 sensors that I modified to plug directly into an Ethernet jack. It was more work than an ‘off the shelf’ solution…but it ended-up working really well for my situation. Thanks for the content. Keep it coming.
Great video, Eric! I had the Eve Degree and for more than a year I enjoyed knowing the outdoor weather stats. Then suddenly it stopped working. I’ll have to get one of these as I too live in the Chicagoland area and its nice to know what the current weather is to be able to plan for the day (although as you know weather here changes in the blink of an eye). Have a great weekend!
I know Im asking the wrong place but does any of you know a trick to get back into an Instagram account? I stupidly forgot my account password. I love any tips you can offer me.
@Azariah Eden Thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and im trying it out now. Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
Eve is killing it with so many great thread products lately! I could see this as an easy way to add smarts to certain automations. Does it expose a lux sensor?
Ok I like that automation that you made with the space heater, but my question for you is why not use the Eve Room indoor temperature sensor instead so it can be in the same room as the space heater? That's what I do with my space heater in my office downstairs, mainly because the temperature that would be read outside can often be skewed by my central HVAC system
Excellent video, Eric! Excited to see more #thread products on the market from Eve! I also like that you can see the historical weather info in the Eve App. A widget would be cool!
I have one of these, and I wish Eve had put more thought into mounting options, I live in a condo, and am prohibited from modifying the exterior of my unit. I am currently using double backed tape even though that isn’t ideal and may be interfering with the humidity sensor
Thanks for comparing it to Eve Degree. Not worth upgrading for me. I own both Eve Room and Eve Degree. Hopefully they will upgrade the Eve Room at some point with Thread. I could easily see people buying multiple Eve Rooms. Multiple Eve Weather/Degree is a harder sell :)
Does the app still take forever to load historical weather data, or leave gaps in it if you don't open the app enough? The Eve degree is super slow if you want to look at graphs over a longer period of time.
It should be much faster using Thread, (HomePod mini required) I have quite a few of the original Eve Weathers around the house, and it takes ages to load the historical data over bluetooth. I just ordered one new Eve Weather... hoping this is much faster using Thread. About the historical data... I wish Eve App stored that in iCloud, and synced between apps, because every iOS device I have needs to load it's own data log. Would be faster if it could be synchronised to iCloud.
I think I was referring to conditional automations in HomeKit setup with the Eve app rather than Siri Shortcuts. You could do the same with multiple "if" statements in Shortcuts where you get the temperature, and then get the humidity if the temperature meets your criteria.
I use a weird setup with my Nest thermostat sensors via a Starling Home Hub. I haven't tried the Eve Room indoor equivalent of this but it looks like a good option.
Thanks for the review Eric. I have a general question do you know the difference between products that are HomeKit and those that work with Siri Shortcuts?
Just general consideration for a temperature sensor. The Eve brand manager also mentioned it in his interview on the recent HomeKit Insider podcast episode.
How do o manually change the screen to degrees F. The phone is reading it correctly but the screen is not the same units. Also none of my guests in my home kit can see the temp?
Great Video! Planning on getting Eve Aqua in order to automate my garden - any automations that are possible with the Eve Weather + Aqua (Ie. Do Not water then trending towards rain)?
That's a great use case except you can only automate based on temperature and humidity. So you have so set a humidity value like 99% that potentially implies rain, but that can vary depending on where you live if that's accurate.
So, is the air pressure actually available in HomeKit? I ask because my Aqara temperature sensor which reports temperature and humidity also measures air pressure, but the air pressure isn’t available in the home app, and I assumed that was because there’s no home standard HomeKit message intended to carry it.
I can see mine just fine through my window. I think that would increase the cost of the device which is always a trade off to find a market for the product. Netatmo and other brands have fancy weather stations if you are looking for something more elaborate.
