While experimenting with a new high efficiency drag type VAWT I stumbled on an easy way to make a lift type vertical axis wind turbine. This new concept uses very light weight low cost materials which should make it easy to erect. Equations are shown for determining the size of the unit to produce a given amount of power at a particular wind speed.
Here is a link to the first video of this series:

Brilliant. I've watched many other DIY wind turbine projects, but this by many factors is the easiest, the one that has me excited to start building and trying out. Thank you.

Great improvement over the previous! On the area and available power, If I were faced with a choose between doubling the radius or doubling the height, both having the same area and presumptivly the same power, I'd choose double the height because asuming the same tip speed ratio, a smaller radius spins faster in a given wind than doubling the radius with the same tip speed in the same wind.

Great for underdevelopment countries and wilderness places. I plan making one to wash clothes. In WWII the young soldiers in Kwajalein built a wind turbine to wash their clothes.

Thank you very much indeed. Everthing is clear as sky. What would be if the number of sails are decreased or increased? How important is a width of the sail? A relation of the sail sides, how longer should be longer side? How about combination of drag type with lift type VAWT? They say that the drag type is efficent at a lower wind velocity and the lift type efficient at higher velocity? Are these upper and lower discs are mandatory or could they be replaced by plastic or metal bars from the center? Thank you again.

Very inspiring video and I am eager to see the your following vawt. Just a quick question: what is the ratio of the long and short sides of the trapezoid sails?
@Jimscoolstuff
@Jimscoolstuff 2 года назад
The long side was 18 inches, the short side was 13 inches, the width was 6 inches. I would shorten the long side to get a better airfoil shape. Thankyou for your comment.
@zoltangacsi4614
@zoltangacsi4614 2 года назад
@@Jimscoolstuff Thank you for your reply and I will then try a bit shorter long side. Presently the picture in my mind of a vawt consists of L-shaped sail holders (both top and bottom) perhaps welded to the axle. (Then the sails would be tangential, and at higher rpm they probably would bend the tip of L-shaped rod toward each other, do not know yet.) I think trying to eliminate the C-sub-2 is a brilliant idea of yours, thank you for sharing with us. I am looking forward to your further modifications!

Hi , Can you tell me have you tested any of these designs with load? It is because I have heard that lift type are best VAWT and especially helical design that self starts.
@Jimscoolstuff
@Jimscoolstuff Год назад
I have not yet tested under load. I am working on a non-electric method to generate heat within a building that is near the VAWT. This will be the load for the turbine. Thanks for your comment.

Awesome concept! I have a question for Jim: would it help to design it with an odd number of sails so that the windward sails don't block the wind from the leeward sails? What ratio of leading edge to trailing edge length did you use for this prototype?
@Jimscoolstuff
@Jimscoolstuff Год назад
An odd number might help; the amount of gap between the sails may be just as important. As I mentioned in the video, the trailing edge was much too long. The flopping of the sails could be greatly reduced by making the trailing edge only slightly longer than the leading edge. Thanks for your comment.

Hello Can i ask how can i get the mounting height of the VAWT using wind speed of the specific location?.
@Jimscoolstuff
@Jimscoolstuff 2 года назад
In general the answer is " as high as you can afford" When looking at open terrain winds, the speed increases with height. The VAWT can be used to utilize wind that is concentrated by objects like buildings and solid fences. In that case the VAWT should be mounted high enough that it is not a danger to people walking below it.

How is it with the Coanda effects? Its always right to simpliphy if it is better! Now I just don't see it! The Sail take more stress, and the better speed, I did not see it! What I see is less torque in same speed! Its not a bad idea just not better!

drum cylinder, no sails, flaps, no cups, just flat bending flexible wings-blades, its like a drum-cylinder with long wires, wrapped around the drum, like coils, but flat sheet blades, simplest ever, just the attachment point to the cylinder-drum
@Jkauppa
@Jkauppa 2 года назад
it could be a wire spool or flat cylinder, both work, the wire spool top-bottom could have the cup effect stoppers to a certain angle adding the pelton cup effect, 0% against the wind, 100% (90 degrees) along the wind, cyclocopter turbine, but passively opened-collapsed
@Jkauppa
@Jkauppa 2 года назад
enhanced lift-cylinder turbine, enhanced magnus effect turbine, with the flat sheets opening, without the cups, just describing the turbine, toilet paper roll with the flexible sheets

I dont respect the betz limit, try center-in radial-out centrifugal turbine, check the math
@Jkauppa
@Jkauppa 2 года назад
betz is only for special set of assumptions, assume you have a small area spread to infinite area, as air hydraulics, you get approaching zero wind speed out, it functions like a bell nozzle, or reverse constriction speed-up nozzle, ie, speed-down hydraulic nozzle
@Jkauppa
@Jkauppa 2 года назад
use a drum, or a wire spool shape, to attach the turbo fins or longer wind blades
