Even In Former Gulag, Stalin's Popularity Persists

Josef Stalin is remembered in the West as a brutal dictator who engineered mass famine, deportations, and the Gulag system. But in Russia, he is often seen as a strong and savvy leader -- even by those who suffered the most under his rule. In Vorkuta, a far-northern city founded as a labor camp, former Gulag prisoners give Stalin credit for winning World War II, and have little to say about his policies of political repression. RFE/RL's Tom Balmforth spoke to former prisoners and other residents of Vorkuta about the complex legacy of the Soviet leader.

He wasn't just a "strong wartime leader".. He built a global superpower in less than a decade, something capitalism took a century to accomplish in America. Furthermore he did this by leading a socialist mode of production, one that purged the exploitation and oppression of previous economic and political systems and replaced it with worker power - something that capitalism to this day still cannot facilitate. No truer democracy can exist without the presence of socialism.

Stalin actually fought for more democracy. Yes, it's true. Stalin wanted the CPSU to be less involved in the management of production. He also wanted to get rid of the growing bureaucracy. The 1936 constitution guaranteed citizens' right to vote and participate in the political affairs of the country. In the 1944 amendments, he increased the autonomy of each of the Soviet republics, creating separate army branches for each one and giving them enough sovereignty to join the UN. All of this was buried under the rug after Khrushchev seized power. Stalin and Beria were demonised.

Isn't it possible that we're looking into history for heroes and villains too often and the grass is always greener (or blacker) on the other side of the history book. At this point we know we can do better and we must look to the future. Is it possible for a man (like Stalin) to be an important man and a Tyrant at the same time? Absolutely! Stalin was an important man because he fought Nazi Germany like a crazed bulldog and that was important. but...The way Stalin punished and ruthlessly imprisoned anyone that said a word against his agenda and ripped that person from his/her family and brutally imprisoned or killed them... Is not OK comrads! It is the best definition of Tyrany. We cannot make exceptions for it historically and we must not allow ourselves to be influenced by the spirit of that kind social thinking. It is tyranny! Millions of USSR citizens were killed!!! The historians are still trying to figure out who killed more people... Hitler or Stalin. Stalin was an evil dictator that used people like pawns in his twisted belief of utopian society. Another point. Germany was defeated by many many countries. Not the US alone, not England alone, and not Russia alone. Pride drives us to believe anything. Please pay closer attention to history and look to the future. There are good kids coming up from Schools Churches and universities that will make excellent leaders. Look to them, not antiquated villains who rot in hell.

@ВасилийМедведев-з5в
The thing about Stalin's relatively brutal repressions (I still think his repressions are far from how brutal the CIA is), is that he knew there was a war coming - he wasn't blind, he expected it. He also knew there were plenty of people inside the country who were opposed to either communism as a system or him as a ruler. And since he himself was a revolutionary, he knew, how those people will stay behind while the main manpower will go to war, and thus had to make sure there was no coup that would remove him from power in the middle of war, thus beheading and destroying the USSR. Were his means brutal? Naturally. Were they justified? That's open to discussion, but I think they were

@@ВасилийМедведев-з5в so what your telling me is all the millions of dead Slav people is fiction? You can’t fake the skeletons of over 6 million people under Stalins rule, yes he stomped hitler, yet this does not excuse him from the millions of his own peoples deaths under him and by the gulags. I come from Slav ancestry with relatives fleeing that country’s tyrannical system at the time, you can’t fake the detriment of communism under the soviet unions rule just as much as you can’t fake the holocaust under hitler. There is no excuse for his paranoia and 6 million Slavic deaths by his orders willingly. He was a tyrannical leader. Was he an amazing war strategist sure. But a tyrant to keep an country alive you can’t kill 6 million of your own people out of fear, to which if you do the institution has already destroyed its values from the inside.

Without American material help - mainly food and trucks - the USSR would have had to quit the war in 1943. Also the fronts in North Africa, northern France and southern France took great pressure off the Russians, causing Hitler to have to split his forces. Without American help, the USSR would have been vanquished. Courage alone doesn't win wars; it also takes food and machinery.

The USSR only got 5% of the Lend lease provisions that Great Britain got (plus they had to pay it back after the war, so it wasn't like it was a free loan)....which wasn't much help. The USSR faced all the elite SS divisions, and 90% of the Wehrmacht. Northern and Southern France fronts...if your talking about after the D-Day invasions which in this case was June 6th 1944....well the Soviet Red Army was already liberating Poland by that time and was on it's way to Western Europe. Stalin wanted a second front opened in 1942 against the Germans but the US and Britain were holding back saying it was not the "right time". It was only in 1944, when the Red Army was liberating Eastern Europe that the US and Britain were afraid of losing the whole European Continent to the influence of the Soviet Union, then and only then did the US and Britain launch D-Day and open the second front.

Excuse me lady, but yes we do know what would have happened. European Russia would have been liberated from Communism and Stalin. You would have been freed from the gulags, and the Germans would have stopped a few miles after Sverdlovsk and a few miles after Stalingrad. Basically they wanted Europe, and that was it, if you didnt want to live under them (as a Slav) then you and your family would go to the "Slav lands" just past the boundaries.

You are just butthurt that what you saw in this video is the opposite of what you wanted. Stalin was the greatest leader of the 20th century. Since the Soviet Archives are being opened up for access by public now, Lies of Solzhenetzyn, Stephen Kotkin and so many others are being debunked without breaking a sweat. If you live in the US, you will see a Stalin statue soon.
