I love the following fabrics: 1. Canvas for corsets and stays as it is nonstretch and it really is firm and it also works great for petticoat making since it can make a really full petticoat and it helps hide the hoops of a crinoline as well as a facing or lining for huge ballgown skirts since its so stiff and it has a lot of volume especially when cartridge pleated to a skirt but a real pain in the butt since it frays and is really bulky and you cam probably break a needle when sewing it by hand or machine. 2. Organza is perfect for petticoats and ruffles and great interlining for sheer fabrics like chiffon and lightweight fabrics. 3. Velvet is perfect for formal wear like long dresses, ballgowns, historical gowns, capes (especially capes fit for royalty), skating costumes and accessories like gloves or bows if you need it to look expensive. The only downside is it can be pricey and you need to buy a bit extra since the nap of the velvet (the floofy pile) must be followed and its gonna be a pain to iron since ironing crushes the fibers which makes crushed velvet. 4. Tulle and Petticoat Net is another amazing fabric to make petticoats especially when its over a hoopskirt since it can double the size of the skirt and it’s much lighter than organza and a bit more breathable because of the open weave. 5. Chiffon is great for formal gowns or grecian style dresses or anything that has drape to it and when its satin faced chiffon, it makes it look like youre wearing liquid. I tend to cut out my lining pieces before I cut the chiffon pieces unless it is draped and I could play around with the way it will hang. 6. Taffeta is perfect for gowns as an outer fabric/fashion fabric or the lining of skirts to help make the skirt stick out more and it was used historically as a skirt lining for Victorian ballgowns since it was woven with metals to make the skirts really stiff and it would rustle which showed off the wealth of the wearer. Softer taffetas are best for drapier garments while super stiff taffetas can really create full skirts and skirt linings.
