Based on more than two hundred interviews with current and former Scientologists and years of archival research, Lawrence Wright discussed his book Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief, which offers an exhaustive account of the church, from its founding by L. Ron Hubbard to its present-day leadership. In a conversation with Library Director Mark Updegrove, Wright explained why celebrities like Tom Cruise and John Travolta are drawn to Scientology and discussed the future of Scientology. Wright is a playwright, screenwriter, and staff writer for The New Yorker. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 2007 for his book The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11. Co-sponsored by the Texas Book Festival.

They need to make a major motion picture about this shit. Celebrity helped Scientology's rise, and so it should facilitate it's final fall.

'The Master', Philip Seymour Hoffman's last film, is a thinly-veiled portrait of L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology. Certainly CoS considers it such; they tried to keep it from being made, and when that didn't work, they tried to keep it from being released.

Scientology sounds like marrying the wrong woman. A spell is cast over you until you wake up one day and you are broke and alone.

Lawrence Wright's writing is outstanding and I hope all people interested in truth and religion would read his book. As an former member of this cult for 13 years, I knew about Hubbard's past, but Mr. Wright came up with new and truthful information about things I always questioned and/or doubted. The information is mind boggling, as you hear some of it here. Also I related to much from my insider perspective as well, even tho I was a public person and not having signed the billion year contract. The ending also was a nice surprise. Thank you Lawrence for writing and exposing the truth and dangers of this so called religion, that can't unfortunately be reformed. -Dee Findlay

Jennifer Brewer You should absolutely read the book, as De Elizabethan recommended, because of the vast amount of information and many accounts of events that have taken place within this "church". The Alex Gibney documentary is absolutely fantastic (I love Alex Gibney and everything he does as we'll), but you can only pack so much into a 2-3 hour documentary. Had Me. Gibney included Mr. Wright's entire book, the documentary would have been 20 hours long, possibly longer. I read things in Mr. Wright's book that I had never heard about before in the probably 10 years or more that I've been studying and educating myself about Scientology, and the "Hoax of Faith" it hides it's giant cash-grab behind.

The answer to your question is due to the difference between knowing something to be true, and being able to prove it in a court of law. Scientology is very well represented legally speaking, and to quote one Justice Department Source directly, "they possess an intelligence gathering and operational apparatus at least as effective as our own CIA." The good news of course is that eventually all of these types of cults fail under their own weight and paranoia.

I used to be in Scientology. But I couldn't have cared less about the fact that celebrities were in it. Celebrities may be the face of the Church, but they have not contributed very much to the growth of the Church, which now is in decline.

I heard that scientology started as a bet between Ron L. Hubbard and someone else, whom said they could create their own religion and people would follow it, and from there it gained momentum, and what started out as a joke, never ended.

Scientology is infiltrating every aspect of civilian infrastructure, including businesses, my mom told me she had to watch an *L. Ron Hubbard* video, I'm assuming was part of "orientation", she told me she just ignored it. Corporations are fast, overextending themselves in areas of our lives where they have no Constitutional Rights. The whose enforcing the Constitution these days. She still works there today. All around me, even in grocery stores, I see young girls in positions of authority, while the older experienced individuals are doing the heavy lifting, while getting paid barely nothing in return, and that's what Scientology is all about, "slavery".

Its not surprising that actors and performers are susceptible to Scientology - they are obsessed with self-improvement or any psychological edge to help them get ahead in their careers.

jlarsena That is pretty interesting. These might be stupid questions; but, did they have the book "Going Clear" at one time and are out or never had them? If they had them earlier, how long have they been out? Did they have any comments when you asked for the book "Going Clear" and they realized they did not have it? How big, population, is your town?

Sorry but I have to call out some bull shit here. In one sentence you say that there are not too many members and in the next you say that the organization owes one billion in taxes??? These two do not add up. If there are no members and no income, where does the income tax come from? One billion dollars in 1990 … I can only imagine the amount of income that would add up to this tax. You can’t have it both ways. No members equals no income. Please explain

I disagree that the Catholic Church might find it hard to come up with a billion dollars in cash. Why? Well, because they are a legitimate religion, not a scam, and they have been around far longer.
