I saw this in the theater, back in the day. It's essentially Hellraiser in space, with the Gravity Drive being the "Lament Configuration" opening up a gateway to Hell. To avoid an X rating, most of the horror ended up on the cutting room floor and was eventually lost (a long story). The missing footage was essential to the story and without it, left gaps in both the plot and the ending, which is why the end is so abrupt.

okay now that makes sense, I could definitely see that having happened! This movie actually really played on my imagination a lot like when the guy got pulled into the black hole I was imagining all of these horrible things inside that black hole just based on how he was when he came back out. Really made me wonder where the ship had been. Pretty wild movie, really enjoyed it. Thanks for watching Kieron!

@John R What do you mean? It's pretty evident that the ship is possessed. That's why the "life readings" are off the scale, and why they change based on what is happening on the ship. When more weird shit starts happening there are references made by Starrk to the "life readings going off the charts." The ship is literally housing an evil consciousness or even multiple (IE: Legion, for we are many?)

The really sad part about this masterpiece is there was about 20 minutes of cut out footage the studio asked to be trimmed from the theatrical release. They torched the footage instead of holding onto it for a Director’s Cut Blu-ray. Would’ve been nice to see Anderson’s full vision for the Event Horizon. Terrific film!

@@LoveLaurenn just to point out, Warhammer 40k is not a movie; it's a table-top wargame - later converted also in a Role-Playing game - set in the far future (the year 40.000). One of the premises is that humanity discovered Faster-Than-Light travel through the opening of wormholes in the fabric of timespace (just like in Event Horizon...) and colonized the galaxy, but during their early travels they were NOT shielded against the cosmic horrors who lived in-between the rift through our reality... and suffered destruction, possession by malevolent entities or both. To avoid that, they created a kind of 'shield' to be immune to those effects. Warhammer 40k fans like to consider the Event Horizon an homage or even a precursor to those first FTL ships that entered the 'Warp' (the extradimensional space) without a 'Gellar Field' (the shield) and went horribly wrong.

6:23 - The reason you're getting an Alien vibe is because the idea of "Hypersleep" is a very real concept in the science community. Many serious sci-fi moviemakers consult engineers & astronauts to add a degree of authenticity in their movies and examples like Alien (1979), Event Horizon (1997), Interstellar (2014), The Martian (2015), etc. all incorporate elements of the reality of space travel. To give you some perspective of the sheer distance, it took the Voyager 2 satellite 12 years to reach Neptune after leaving Earth in 1977. It was traveling at 19 kilometers per second (42,000 mph) so it would be necessary to put astronauts in hypersleep so they age slower (or not at all). Otherwise, people would reach old age and most likely go nuts trying to pass the time in a moving tin can during the long voyage from point A to point B. 43:20 - To clarify the confusion, yes the ship came back "haunted" (more specifically possessed). Regarding the plot deviation, they were trying to mix elements of a supernatural demonic-hell type reality with classic sci-fi. This actually isn't crazy considering scientists have theorized the existence of a multiverse (multiple realities & dimensions).
@annaolson4828
@annaolson4828 Год назад
This is a movie where the missing footage is super noticeable. The best explanation I've theorized is the chaos dimension wants more victims, hence why it's trying to lure people to the Event Horizon. It uses the "hallucinations" to convince people to stay on the ship.

@michaelccozens

@@UberWraith Yeah, I think the implication is that whatever evil the Ship picked-up may not have been contained solely in the gravity-drive chamber. That would certainly fit with the repeated notes about the whole vessel giving off low-level life signs. When you design a ship with coffin-shaped hallways, you gotta expect that sort of possibility.
@singledad1313
@singledad1313 4 месяца назад
Another thing to point out is in the final scene when Weir visor raises up Stark sees his face as it only appears AFTER he got sucked out into space and brought back by the ship. Stark has never seen that visage, only Captain Miller has. She doesn't have a memory of that for her to hallucinate about. Her seeing it like that after being rescues implies they never got away.
@geesmash5717
@geesmash5717 2 года назад
Okay (this is speculation) I feel like potentially what happened - it opened/ or went to a demon like hell dimension? I'm also interest to understand if the ship was "cursed" and maybe the "curse" is following them and hasn't been destroyed? Or maybe she has PTSD which is totally understandable.
@LoveLaurenn
@LoveLaurenn 2 года назад
YESSSSS I was thinking that the curse follows them! Like they can't escape it, plus they are technically still on the ship when they escape (they just detached from the black hole part of the ship I thought) so wouldn't it just follow them in theory? I was thinking something along those lines too! Good thinking Gee smash😊

Re: space communication. Even though radio signals move at light speed, the distances involved in interplanetary travel are so vast that comms become very difficult. Even Mars requires about a 20-minute turnaround when sending and receiving messages from Earth. There's a sci-fi concept called an "ansible", or a comms device that somehow permits instant communication over such distances, but it's still mostly a plot device, though it will be crucial to any kind of farther-flung colonization (assuming human civilization survives that long, which is a very, very long bet at the moment). You might be able to base such tech on quantum entanglement (AKA "spooky action at a distance"), but that's still in its infancy, and has some very disturbing implications regarding time, the transmission of information, and their impact on the possibility of free will (fun thought experiment: "time" may be purely an artifact of human perception. Higher physics doesn't seem to require it at all). Fishburne has the most logical reaction of any horror-movie character ever; "We're leaving". He's maybe beat by that one Wayans from one of the "Scary Movie" films, who reacts to finding out he's in a "Paranormal Activity" house by immediately throwing his shit in a moving van and peeling out. Another "blue-collar space" movie from around this time that often gets overlooked is "Soldier", starring Kurt Russell. The dude playing Cooper here was mostly known at the time as the no-nonsense bailiff on "Judging Amy". It was pretty fun to watch him lean into this role.

Since you clearly enjoyed it (despite the confusion), I would therefore HIGHLY recommend another sci-fi horror movie calleed Pandorum, which is a sort of spiritual sequel to this (Paul Anderson even produced it). It's got the same super creepy atmosphere and is a spectacularly well-designed, well-crafted suspenseful thrill-ride, and it's also even darker and with greater kinds of existentialist themes underpinned throughout. This one is a favorite , it was a one off to my disappointment , no sequel ,but that's ok since i'm pretty ok with this just being a straight up " Haunted house in space " movie without answering too many questions . People have been wanting a directors cut for years , but no one has been able to find an original print thus far , which is probably for the better because if you've heard about some of the stuff they cut out , it gets way crazier than it really needs to be . Lol .

Warhammer 40.000: When the Warp shields fails, the movie. For those not knowing, in the Grimdark ScyFy univers of Warhammer 40.000( stands for the year, the 41st millenium), Mankinds most used means of Faster than Light travel through the Galaxy, is Warp jumping... Wich is...moe or less how it works in the movie. Ships punch a Hole in teh Fabric of time, space and reality, to travel through an Alternative Dimension made up of raw Psychic Energy, called the Warp (also the Empyrean, the Sea of Souls etc) Warp travels in itself is allready pretty dangerous, cause the Warp is a dimension where the Laws of Physics loosely applies if not at all, the flow of time is different, and sometimes reversed in some of its regions, and its absolutly impossible to have a fix navigation route, since the place is ever shifting/morphing, since its composed of the raw Psychic manifestation of EVERY LIVING ORGANISMS of the Galaxy (their thoughts, emotions etc, so to say their souls) The only way Warp travels are possible is because the Imperial Navy uses Psykers, mutated humans, that has a specific genetic mutation that allows them to tap into the raw power of the Warp, and use it as Psychic abilities and plot a course through the Warp( think like the Navigators in DUNE) And the Astronomican, a Gigantic Psychic beacon emanating from Terra( Earth), generated by the God-Emperor of Mankind, who is enshrined in the Golden Throne device, where the Emperor's Broken body is enthombed for the last 10.000 years, this Beacon acts as a Light house visible in the Warp throughout the Galaxy, and is the ONLY fixated point of reference that Navigators can use to plot a course. AND ALL THAT, is without the OTHER dangers of the Warp... The Gods of Chaos and their minions, the Chaos Daemons, embodied manifestations of Livings things raw emotions, psyché and nightmares... Emotional manifestations made "flesh" with a Dark and Malicious intellect and Twisted personality, that only aspire to consume and torture the inhabitants of the Physical World... Basically Hell, Humans in the far futur, will litteraly travel through Hell and face off Daemons to go place to place... So 40k fans, as dubbed Event Horizon, the most percect representation of what happens, when a Warp jump goes wrong...

YES I also enjoy movies that have a build up and Event Horizon definitely did. I really enjoyed how well it utilized audience imagination throughout the film. I kept imagining what horrible things and places that ship has probably seen😶When the guy got pulled into the blackhole and he came out traumatized, my mind was running rampant with all the possibilities of what could be inside that black hole. I enjoyed that the most I'd say. Really underrated film! No one really talks about this film which is a shame. Really glad I watched it! I appreciate your feedback Mark, thank you for watching!😊

There is even a special Director's Cut that sadly will never see the light if day as most of the gory bloodier footage has disintegrated in a Transylvania Salt Mine. The extended blood orgy scene was so strong audience members felt sick to their stomach so it was from the movie.

It was like a haunted house in space with some Alien vibe. Well in an another sci-fi universe, the Warhammer 40k if you travel faster than light in space you indeed reach a hellish chaos realm and it possesses the ships inhabitants. Here they took somewhat similar idea. Also nice to realise that Sam Neill is a good horror movie actor too. Pre-Matrix Laurence Fishburne also did a good job. Great reaction. :)

What I like about Event Horizon is that it deals solely with the human psyche. It references a dimension outside of the known universe, and seems to imply that the ship itself might be alive, or infested with some form of life, but all we see is how the human mind interprets what it's experiencing while aboard this sliver of the unknown dimension, The Event Horizon. Its the incomprehensible that drives the horror here, I think. And the brief clip of the previous crew shows what direct exposure to this unknown dimension does to a person, driving them to unfathomable acts of insanity, cruelty and base sensation. The why of it remains unknown, only that such a dimension exists and is now accessible is understood. And I think the question remains, if we were able to reach this dimension and expose it to the technology required to travel there, and for that tech to remain there for seven years, what might the denizens of that dimension have learned that might allow them to reach back toward us? It's too bad the box office wasn't very kind to this film, as it seems primed for a sequel to explore just that question. There were reports a few years ago that Amazon Prime was developing a series based on the film, but I haven't read anything recently about that development progressing. Anyway, this was fantastic to watch Lauren, thanks for putting up one of my favorite sci-fi cosmic horror films. Oh, and don't think I didn't notice my comment being on screen, I'm glad I was counted as one of the ones who pushed you toward this '90's cult classic. lol That said, I think I'll join in with the many comments on this already; If you enjoy Sam Neill, I definitely suggest following up at some point with "In the Mouth of Madness". It's another one of those '90's horror cult classics I think you might like. Take care, be well, and Enjoy the Day!

Hi, loved your reaction to this film. I took my wife to the cinema to watch this on release thinking it was a pure sci-fi film and on coming out she beat on me all the way to the car park as she hates horror!! Also i found your observation at the start about a crucifix great as the design of the ship was meant to emulate a cathedral from above so you got the correct vibe for it, so subliminally it is meant to put you on edge from the start, but you cannot pin down the reason for this.

@@LoveLaurenn You should try to get hold of the later version of The Shining, known as the European Cut. It was Kubrick's final version of the film, and is tighter and IMO more effective. It removes some scenes that were redundant and slowed the film too much, and also removes the silly skeletons from the climax.

Event Horizon is an example of a “cosmic horror” film. Like Lovecraftean horror it deals with the incomprehensible terror of the unknown. It’s like the Event Horizon went to a place so alien and terrifying that the human mind can’t handle it. It’s not literally hell but might as well have been. I think space is such a great horror movie setting because space is endless, dangerous and completely foreign. It’s scary to think of everything that could be out there. 😨

It's unfortunate that this film only now getting the credit it deserves.... Apparently there is a lot of footage that was left on The cutting room floor. And the cast and crew said it is much more violent and gory than anything put the film. Fans have been asking for a director's cut since they found out about it but I believe the director said the footage has been lost which is unfortunate because we will never get to see what his true vision was... Apparently the scene where Sam Neil says hell is just a word reality is so much worse there's a very long scene of torture and violence in hell among other cutscenes..... Regardless I still like this movie

I don't mind the slightly-dodgy CGI in this context. It was pretty good for the time, and wasn't overused in the film as it so often was in that and later periods (and now), but I liked it for the same reason that I like stop-motion monsters; that queasy feeling they give you that they don't quite obey the same laws of physics that you do. It's particularly fitting for a Lovecraftian tale, as he loved to talk about how the Old Ones, by their very presence, distorted and destroyed the laws of Euclidean geometry. The fact that you only really saw the dodgier bits inside the Event Horizon made the interior of the ship feel "wrong", in a very appropriate way.

One of my favorite movies of all time! I have to say I think Dr weir purposefully built the event horizon to go to hell so he could see Claire again. He was working hard not spending time with her. She committs suicide. His design goes to a maddening state. Builds a ship that opens a deminsional gateway to where he can see his lover again...in Hell! Awesome review
@michaelccozens
@michaelccozens 2 года назад
Mmmm, I dunno. I'm not totally dismissing the idea, but I think it somewhat undermines the scarily-unfounded malevolence of the Ship itself and where it may have gone. I do like the idea of the Ship as kinda a manifestation/symbol of his own guilt and remorse, though; the best horror often has that layer of personal symbolic psychological trauma.
