Event Photography: What Event Photographers Should Focus On

You teach event photography with more heart than anyone else I’ve watched.

I’m shooting my first event in a week and just wanted to say your approach to photography and teaching is so greatly appreciated. I’m feeling more confident, free and creative with each video of yours I watch. Also appreciate your holistic approach of being mindful of health and taking care of the whole body.

I love the expressions in your photos. I think that’s what’s so great about event photography, it’s so positive, people are having good times, smiling, laughing. I try to capture some of that joy for life in street photography, but it’s rare, especially since March 2020.

Mik, I love your videos. They're very helpful and inspiring. I've been photographing for a local chapter of a financial organization that mainly wants images to post on social media and their website that shows the event as a whole, all of the people that attend, group shots of strategic partners with some of the members, the keynote speakers. They want lots of wide shots to show the overall atmosphere and size of the event. But there are only so many of those I can take before it feels like I'm taking the same pictures. I will throw in a few of the emotional shots, which they said are fine, but they don't have much use for those, so that is not my focus. I also throw in some detail shots, which usually include the cocktails and the dinner tables in some way. Each event I shoot for them, I try to find ways to be more creative, and still capture what they've requested. I'm used to shooting sports events, and a lot of graduation events for major colleges and universities. They love the close-up emotional shots, detail shots, and just a whole variety of everything. So this new client I'm shooting for is a new challenge for me. Although I like a good challenge! It helps make me a better photographer. Thanks again for all you do!
