Heyy..this video will give you guys a tour of my EBC journey and what to expect in winters, especially in December, for those who aspire to go. I've tried to document as much as possible in the cold and what I believed was relevant.
First things first, you need to be physically and mentally prepared for this trek. Its difficult, especially if you are going solo. It would take you maximum 12 days, Kathmandu to Kathmandu (with acclimatization days).
Secondly, you would need minimum INR 20,000 (NPR 32000 approx) for your meals, hot water, charging of electronic devices, hot showers etc. So carry sufficient money (nepali currency) with you when you start from Kathmandu. This amount is excluding the total trip cost.
Third and most importantly, tip the porters heavily. It's their only source of income and honestly their pay is peanuts in comparison to the labour and efforts they put in. So please, please, tip them after your trek.
All trekking gears and clothes were bought from @decathlon_india
Music sourced from RU-vid Audio Library.

Only if words could describe what we witnessed there. Me and Paloma met during our mountaineering course at HMI and decided to do EBC together. If you bond with someone in the mountains, there cant be anything better than this. Hence, I and Paloma share a very special bond. We both documented the entire journey to EBC in our own styles and we're the happiest watching each other do it together and hug it out everyday with gratitude and humbleness. This video took me back to EBC and I smiled for 53 minutes straight. Such a great job done with the edits while keeping it unfiltered and raw! While this was just the first and most memorable one for us, hopefully we both will climb more peaks together! To the friendship made in the mountains, that'd stay pure forever!

Excellent video. Both the production values of the video and the quality of narration is very good. A word about Spirituality since you mention it. Spirituality has a very different meaning in Indian thought than it has in Western thought. After reading a lot of material on this subject my understanding is : Being Spiritual is to follow/ practice Dharma. And Dharma is (paraphrasing what Hindol Sengupta said) : All that which needs to be done to keep the laws of Nature working.

Hi Thanks for sharing this amazing video!! Could I take a minute of your time to ask you one question? My mom and I are planning to go for a trek to Everest Base Camp (EBC) with guide. I'd like to inquire about the weather conditions for EBC-Gokyo Lake in Nepal from December 1st to January 10th. Is it advisable for hiking during that time? ( considering the weather condition & the hiking diffiiculties & physical adaptability ) Would you recommend hiking EBC in winter season? Based on my understanding, at altitudes of 4000-5000 meters in Dec-Jan, the daytime temperatures range from 0 to 10 degrees Celsius, while the nighttime temperatures drop to around 0 to -20 degrees Celsius. Is my understanding correct? Caues we plan to spend around 25-30 days on the trail, and we are considering going in December until early January. We want to avoid the crowds during the peak season of October and November, but we are concerned if December and January are suitable for the trek. I would appreciate any suggestions or insights you might have regarding climbing and camping at the base during December and January. Thank you very much.
@paloma_mitra
@paloma_mitra Год назад
Hi Chen, so glad you liked the video! To answer you, yes you can trek in the first half of December where the lodges and cafés are still open. But towards the end of December, most of the people come down to Lukla or Kathmandu, from the higher altitudes so it will be difficult to find lodges that provide the needed resources and facilities. But since you’re going with a guide, they’d arrange for accommodations, although the options will be limited. But that shouldn’t be a major problem. 2. Secondly, it gets extremely cold in January and end of December. It starts snowing as well so the 3 passes and gokyo lakes(which maybe frozen) and the trail towards Gorakshep and EBC gets covered with snow and ice that makes it very hard to navigate. It’s almost inhuman to stay in those conditions in that altitude, which is primarily the reason why the Sherpa community come down to lower altitudes during extreme winter conditions. Considering you’re taking your mom with you, you’ll have to be mindful of her physical capabilities.. otherwise, it shouldn’t be an issue if you think she can withstand the conditions. 3. Therefore, if you’re planning to do the EBC and 3 passes trek, I’d suggest you start in the last week of November and continue till mid December. The entire duration of the trek will vary between 12-18 days, depending on your speed and acclimatisation level. I think you’ve chosen the perfect time to travel but just start a bit earlier to be on the safer side. The views are spectacular during this time..probably the best time to travel, with not many people on the trail. You’ll literally find a handful of groups travelling in December so you’d have the trails and the surrounding beauty of the mountains all to yourself. Hope this helps you. Have a great day! :)

@paloma_mitra
@paloma_mitra 3 месяца назад
Thank you so much for your kind words, Sir. Firstly, it would have been amazing if you could’ve done the trek on your own but as per the rules of the Nepalese government, solo trekking has been banned. So you will have to book a professional guide. Secondly, there are many benefits of hiring a local guide as they’ll arrange for the trek permits, accommodations and food etc..most importantly they’ll ensure you don’t get altitude sickness. So do hire a guide and you can choose to not hire a porter and do the trek on your own might and willpower by carrying your own backpack through and through. It’ll be challenging but worth the effort. The feeling of satisfaction will be unparalleled. Since I went in December, I had to carry some extra layers but roughly the bag pack should weigh between 10-12kgs. Hope this helps :) Do reach out for further queries. Thanks

thank you for detailed reply. before I add anything, since you have a course in mountaineering I expected more videos from you. Hope you have climbed your fav ama dablam peak by now. in Sagarmatha national park, the guide rule does not apply. I have acquaintances who have climbed solo last year and have studied the rules for same personally to make it doubly sure. I have noted your suggestions and will delve over it very seriously. of all concerns, permit and accommodations frankly in that region is not a concern. my concerns are : strength to carry my backpack, ams and evacuation. I am working on first two very rigorously Also, just to add here ma'am the thrill of climb to ebc lies (for me) in solo without porter/guide. I would do guided tour to a technical peak like stok kangri or friendship peak. I thank you once again for your guidance. do raise any red flags which you can think of. @@paloma_mitra

@@ravisampat yeaa undoubtedly doing this on your own would be breathtaking and EBC trail is well laid out. Navigating it won’t be a problem at all..but yes, the bag weight, endurance and AMS is something you will have to train for..because although the trek isn’t technical, it is quite an arduous journey.. Paloma....absolutely loved yr vid. Very well edited & presented. I know u did yr trek in Dec but can u tell me the start & finish dates as I was originally planning a Nov trek including the 3 passes but yr vid may well have persuaded me to do it later like u did...🙂

@paloma_mitra 11 месяцев назад
Hi Domenic..thanks a lot for showing your support and liking the video. I started this trek on the 1st of December and it takes around 2 weeks to complete the trek with acclimatisation days. If you’re doing the 3 passes it’ll probably take a couple days more. So you should be done by the third week of December which is perfect and probably the best time for you to return. Most locals and the high mountain community make their way down to Kathmandu or Lukla to avoid the unbearable cold temperatures, so you’ll find very few lodges and services towards the end of December. So if possible, try and finish the trek before the 20th of December. It gets pretty pretty cold as well, so do prepare well mentally and physically 😅 Cheers!

I.m actually starting my trek in Jeri which is the traditional starting point for this trek. Originally I was going to start in Lukla but decided against it. By going this extra distance + doing the 3 passes I will plan to start in the 3rd wk of Nov which will roughly line me up with yr dates for the classic EBC trek but obviously my 3 passes & Gokyo means I wont be getting back until 3rd wk of Dec. You were so blessed with blue skies but the price u pay is the cold which dosent bother me. Total cost in Indian rupee (kthmadu to kthmadu)..please tell..
@paloma_mitra
@paloma_mitra 11 месяцев назад
It depends on a lot of factors like the agency you choose and porter cost, which season you plan to go in. I went in winter so the cost was a bit lower since it’s an off season. And I went through a local agency. In my case the total trek cost was INR 30,000 (excluding food, water, charging and other miscellaneous expenses.) This cost includes your flight to and fro KTM-Lukla-KTM, permits and passes, accommodation. You must carry an additional INR 20,000 for the expenses mentioned above like food, hot water etc. Tipping is highly recommended for the porters and guides as that is their only source of income and it requires almost inhuman labour to do their job. So it’s recommended to tip 15%of your trek cost or more. That’s upto you and your capability. No hard and fast rule as such. Hope this helps :)

20000 NRs will not get you very far, maybe one day. Porters should get a decent salary, not rely on tips. Never tip more than 15%. If they get or are likely to get big tips the agency owner does not pay them salary at all. Thus you tip the owner, not the porter. Why did you go up via Tengboche when there is a much more impressive high trail on the opposite side of the valley via Phortse? The Mong La - Phortse - Pangpoche High Scenic Trail offers vastly better views, lots of wildlife and practically no other trekkers. Tengboche can be visited on the way down.
@paloma_mitra
@paloma_mitra Год назад
Hi Tapio..appreciate your feedback..Ofcourse the porters should get a decent salary but more often that not, that is not the case. I agree it should be minimum 15% of the trek cost,as tips, but you one can be generous in cash or kind, it’s upto the customer. And yeah, I wish we went via the route you suggested. Also wanted to do the three passes. Hopefully, will return again and go through the village of Phortse :)
