Review of the Evergoods Civic Half Zip which is a durable and minimal everyday bag with a simple layout and a surprising amount of space.
What do you guys think of the CHZ22? Do you prefer a top loading or clamshell style bag?

I finally found what I believe to be the perfect solution to his problem. Rather than using a towel, I placed a normal-size rubber mouse pad where you placed the towel and now the bag feels 1000% better. Thank you for showing me the way.

So nice to see this comment. I think you're referring to the back hitting you in the wrong spot (I actually got bruises). I found the framesheet almost impossible to remove and am deeply hoping for a fix that lets me leave as is. I can't tell if my pain is coming from the rigidity of the bottom and the corners or the sheet. I tried the towel too, which didn't work so well. I'd love to know more about the secret you used (and positioning) to offer relief. I just bought the new version with the new back hoping it will feel better. Maybe not. The bag just might be too long for my short torso. I love the aesthetic of EG bags but the same issue is happening on the CPL, even the v3 with the new back. I wonder if thicker, back padding and softer corners would resolve the problem and eliminate need for the stick straight framesheet which doesn't conform to the torso. I wish manufacturers would pay more attention to this element (I'm on a rant about framesheets)...thanks for your ear.

How the heck did you get your hand to reach the bottom of the bag to insert a mouse pad (great idea)? I wish they had made it easier to remove (you can’t. It’s in there for life. Trying not to mess with it too much for fear they won’t let me return it. Will try it on V1 and older version of CPL. Thanks for idea.

Reminds me of one of the last bags you reviewed, the Able Carry Daybreaker. Similar pocket layout and general design.
@dannypacks
@dannypacks 4 года назад
Thank you for watching and good point! The bags do have a pretty similar aesthetic and layout but the feel really different in use as the CHZ22 has much heavier and padded materials whereas the daybreaker is meant to be a lot more lightweight :)

This looks great! Would it fit a change of gym clothes and sneakers, plus a 13” MacBook and a lunchbox? Planning to use this for edc on the train going to the office and gym.

Nice review, as always. Hope you review the new version and I pray the new back likes my back better. Unlike your experience, I didn't find the bag molded to my back. I can't tell if it was the frame sheet or rigid bottom/corners that banged against my back or it just didn't hit in the right spot. I wonder if a waist strap (which they'll never add) would have prevented that (I run a lot for trains) or load lifters (which they'll never add), or a more malleable frame sheet (which I think a lot of manufacturers need to rethink). Maybe it's just too long for my torso. (17" - though I can get by with 18"). Funny, it works best for me when it's fully loaded. I'm such a fan of the EG aesthetic, I keep trying to make their bags work for me. Thanks for ear.

Thank you for watching and some great thoughts there! I’m staring to use the new version now and so far it feels fairly similar so some of the challenges may still be there, hopefully if evergoods gets enough feedback they can make some updates in those areas and I agree with the aesthetic, just so clean overall!
@seechangenyc280
@seechangenyc280 Год назад
@@dannypacks I agree. It feels pretty similar to V1. The new back isn’t enough of a change that adds to comfort or makes it a keeper. And on this version, the shoulder straps are too long. There’s nothing left to pull. I am out of strap so I can’t get the bag close enough to my back, even fully packed out (same thing happened on both RFF packs, even the 12 hour). I think these bags are meant for someone with a longer torso. Had I liked the the look/design of the PLC20, that would likely been the best fit. Despite my love for EG, I might have to throw in the towel and look elsewhere. Shame, aesthetically, they rule.

Hi Danny another very informative review. I’m thinking about purchasing this bag. But it’s preorder which I’m not big on delivery Jan/Feb 2022. I like to purchase and have the item in my hands in a week. Oh well. I’m going to watch your review of the 24 litre one which I’m presuming you prefer that bag over this one. I worry about 24L being to big for me. I’m not very tall and not sure how the 24L would sit on my back. I don’t mind this opening I know you prefer the clam shell opening as the 24L has. It looks to me that this 22L has some good space from the angle you showed in this video. And it could handle some big items. I have been using the bellroy classic backpack with 16L and yes it’s a small compact bag. I like it but now I’m thinking of getting something a little bigger since the bellroy classic can only handle so much. I should have ordered the 20L bellroy classic backpack but stupid me figured the 16L compact would be fine. So now I’m trying to decide if I go for a bigger bag how much bigger should I go. I don’t think there is any point ordering the bellroy classic 20L backpack since it’s the exact same bag I have with just 4 more litres. I like my little bellroy classic backpack I think it’s a great little bag. So im going to ask you how you feel about this 22L from evergoods. I don’t carry a Liptop with me so I don’t need a laptop area but almost every backpack has one now so it’s no big to me. I agree getting a laptop out of this 22L bag when it is full looks very frustrating. The 24 evergoods backpack is quite a bit more money almost $100. So budget wise the civic 22L is more towards my budget. But since I like my bellroy classic backpack I’m thinking of getting the bellroy classic back plus which is a 24L bag so would you recommend the evergoods civic 22L or the bellroy classic backpack plus at 24L?
@dannypacks
@dannypacks 2 года назад
Thank you for watching and I’m glad the video was helpful! I really enjoyed using the CHZ22 and was surprised with how much it could hold, if you like the smaller bellroy bag than it should work great, the classic plus is a solid bag as well, I really like the organizational layout on that one although it does feel like a pretty big bag (even tho it’s 24 something about the height or the shape just felt bigger than I would have liked) so between the two I would probably go with the chz22 but if you need extra organization or prefer to have a laptop sleeve that is separate from the main compartment than the classic plus might be a better option :)

Would anyone know if the bag be able to hold a Macbook Pro 16"? I know the site says 15", but with a 4-way stretch, I'm hoping that measurement is a recommendation. Other bags have 15" laptop sleeve, but can accommodate up to a 17", so I'm wondering if this is one of those bags.

Hey Salseros, great review here! I happen to be using a Fjallraven Raven 20 right now and saw that you did a review on the Raven 28. I find the Raven 20's back panel to be an issue for me as it makes me really sweaty and was wondering if you can share how does the CHZ22's back panel/air flow compare to the Raven 28?

@feeeeeed 2 года назад
Hi! I’m keen to purchase this one .Seeing videos from evergoods, I believe that to take the laptop out you are supposed to stand the bag up, flex the back panel outwards like the curve you mention while wearing it. and then the laptop should be more accessible

Thank you for watching and that’s a good point! Although when the bag is full it might still be a little tricky to get your device out, I agree that could help and overall I still really like the bag and think it’s a great edc option!:)

Hey Salseros! I've been getting a little obsessed with materials lately, and in trying to find a bag I ended up finally ordering the bellroy classic v2. I contacted the company and they told me the material is 620D cordura. Here the CHZ22 is 500D nylon. It's strange. The CHZ22 seems more rugged, but the 620D cordura of the classic v2 feels like a sail or like an otter's back. Very sleek and 'non-rugged'. Idk if you're as frantic about materials, but since you have more experience with bags- shouldn't the bellroy feel 'stronger' or more rugged since it's (I'm assuming) of a stronger material?
@MrJed_s
@MrJed_s 4 года назад
Denier is a measurement of how heavy the thread/yarn is that makes up the fabric, so it's not as simple as higher denier = heavier/stronger fabric as I understand, as the weave makes a big difference. I think a good example is the 1680D ballistic nylon used in Aer bag, which I doubt would be more than 3x heavier/stronger than the 500D used in the Evergoods bags. I'm no expert so I can't really elaborate further :)
@basse9914
@basse9914 4 года назад
@@MrJed_s I see. I saw a post on a blog (only one I could find regarding the matter) showing various Deniers and types of fabric, and one pattern I noticed was that the higher the Denier the higher the strength (specifically for CORDURA nylon though). It's strange, there's not many studies on this lol

Hi! I find the bag attractive but nevertheless for my taste it still lacks another external pocket. I have a slightly strange question (!): According to your experience of the bag, do you think that it is "wipable" easily? I'm pretty obsessive (even before the covid situation!) and I like to clean my bag regularly with wet wipes. Some materials lend themselves to it (maybe like in Aer products, i guess !), others much less! Thanks
@dannypacks
@dannypacks 4 года назад
Thank you for watching and good question! I didn’t try any wet wipes on the bag myself, but I would say the bag is fairly wipeable. the material is rugged and tough but I was able to remove dirt and dust without too much trouble. Hope that helps a bit and please let me know if there are any additional questions I can help answer about the bag!:)
@gs_f
@gs_f 4 года назад
@@dannypacks Thank you for your reply. I assume it is the same material for the CPL24, which interests me now more than this one, because I just saw that they added a pocket, and that it looks more slim when it is not filled (closer thus to what I am looking for). In terms of "wipability" however, I guess the best would be X-Pac or something like that. Thank you for your help. Excellent channel and awesome reviews! ^^

@dannypacks

Thank you for watching and good question! Personally I prefer the bellroy Classic as I like the aesthetic and harness system and laptop compartment a little bit more. The main thing imo that the evergoods has over the bellroy is the water bottle pockets on the outside. Thank you for watching and good question! I think you can definitely do that, it can just get a little cumbersome if you have to get your laptop in and out a lot during the day (this will also be extra tricky if the bag is really full or if you have a taller laptop but I think since the 26 is likely a little taller it might not be as big of an issue).
