I’ve got a mainly “woodland “ shady garden with many of the featured plants you’ve used here. I wouldn’t normally favour “contemporary” style however you have really created a stunning tranquil oasis here. The black paint really does make all the green foliage pop along with the sophisticated grey porcelain patio slabs. It’s refreshing to see the same plants in a completely different landscape. I absolutely love it. You’ve done a fabulous job here. I enjoyed this content just as much as your tropical garden.
Its going to look top notch, very different to your own garden considering the use of similar foliage. Looking forward to seeing the patio and gazebo. Cheers.
Cheers. Yeah very different from my garden but hoping to show these plants can work in all styles of garden if a little thought goes into it. Many thanks.
Thank you. Yes the beds will drain quickly so will need frequently watering in summer. Lots of the plants don’t need lots of water but we have added manure to the soil for the plants that do to help retain moisture plus they will be mulched which should also help. Cheers
Lovely to see a work in process! I really love your videos, learn so much from them. I'm thinking of doing a raised bed along a fence, but wondering what you would fill it soil wise from scratch? It's going to take a lot of compost bags lol
Thank you. How you fill the raised bed really does depend on the type of plant’s and their requirements. In general though you can buy top soil from many builders merchants in 1 tonne bags and then add grit or gravel if the plants love free draining soil or add compost and manure if they are more big leaved plants like bananas. Cheers
Really nice to see a work in progress and your thought process behind the various choices. Do you ever use any ground cover plants? I'm currently looking for a few evergreen and hardy ground cover plants for both full sun and partial shade. Any advice?
It looks great! Ver similar to my own garden except my fences and raised beds are natural wood colour. I do have a wooden clad workshop in one corner that provides a black background
Thank you. I love the natural wood colours and in my own garden I’ve gone for dark oak on lots of the structures but black fences to create a dark canvas for the green leaves. Cheers
Hi and thank you. The olives were brought by the customer and should be fine in most winters. In harsh winters they may need fleecing. A garden very close by has one that looks to have been planted out for many years and looks fine and healthy. We’ve put them in full sun and a raised bed with a free draining soil to give them the best chance.cheers
Cheers. I’m looking forward to adding the other plants to make it all flow. I can see it in my mind it’s just making it reality with the plant choices I have to keep it manageable.
This garden is going to look fantastic, great choice of plants. I'm looking forward to seeing it when complete. Also now thinking, maybe get an olive tree for the centre of my garden
Cheers Diane. Olives are great but with the temps you had in previous winters I would be a little cautious as they may take some serious damage if you get a repeat of temps you had in the past.
Looks great! Be interesting to hear more about what the lesser known filler plants / trees and shrubs you have used between the palms, phormiums and japonicas are etc.
