Just because it isn't designed for it, doesn't mean that it is not safe to do so. Just that you will need to be better conditioned to handle it and understand that it isn't going to respond properly.

As a physic, i can tell that the water punching bag bounces less due to the elastic behavior of the water. Every hit deforms the bag and bounces it. The energy used in deforming the bag makes the tempersture going up so a bigger part of the energy used in hitting the bag transform in increasing the temperature (this don't happen as much as in a solid punching bag), sorry for my bad english

i remember the very first time i hit a heavy bag it was a sand bag and top was so compressed it was like a brick wall but i did not know so i walked up bare knuckle and hit the top of the bag with a big chuck liddel style overhand right and messed my hand up , dont think i broke it but it was so swollen i couldn't make a fist for about a week.
@melchaios

Yeah, same here. It was my wake up call when I started to get interested in martial arts and boxing around age 12, I asked my parents for a heavy bag and when I got it I was so excited I thought "YEAH, Imma beat the shit our of this bag". Being a complete noob I hit it with all my might bare knuckle, and sprained my wrist. That's when It hit me, that not only I didn't know how to punch properly, I didn't even know how to close my fist correctly.

I don’t understand why this hasn’t been done: the Thai bags are great BUT after a few years of use, they pack hard at the bottom & the top gets flimsy. Easy design fix would be to attach a hanger at both ends so as the filling starts to pack, turn it over & let it re-settle. Any feedback?

@Willy_Milano
@Willy_Milano 4 года назад
The reason that the sandbag swings a lot more than the water bag is that rubber and water absorb the energy of the punches a lot better by deforming and distributing the punch. The sandbag transfers energy through most of its volume and the inertia of your punch is added to the bag's almost completely.

We tried water bags in the 90s. They didn’t work out so well for boxing. Have you ever heard the old saying that water turns to concrete if you hit it fast enough? That’s what happened when the mid-weight guys started throwing power punches on them. Even with wraps and gloves, some guys got bruised and bleeding knuckles. Everlast came up with a fix, by adding an inch of high density foam to the bag lining, but most boxing clubs were turned off by the bad experience.

It's good to have both kinds of bags. The water bags stay stationary, which is nice for all the reasons you say, but likewise it is good to have the movement of an ordinary bag so you work on your footwork.
@Skyldyel

Hey Ramsey. That might be a bit outside of your usual topics, but I was wondering: I have seen a few MMA fights with multiple fighters on each side. To me they always looked more like multiple 1:1 fights happening at the same time than two groups fighting each other. Do you think we will maybe one day see group tactics or even formation fighting in unarmed martial arts? Or are these events to rare for something like that to emerge?
@poorkwamoi
@poorkwamoi 6 лет назад
Space and mass when added with motion makes it very hard for two people to attack one person unless the person being attacked is held, pinned or on the ground. So, an experienced fighter can always make multiple attackers form a bee line not to mention there is always a "let him try it first" from the attackers POV
@Skyldyel
@Skyldyel 6 лет назад
Group fighting in armed combat has evolved and refined for several millenia. It's proven again and a gain that fighters who can hold formation and in general know how to group fight have a huge advantage over the same number of individualists. The question is, does that translate to unarmed fighting? The point is that group fighting is an extra skillset that has to be learned and trained. If the group does not have it, exactly what you said will happen. Now, since most professional fights are 1:1 does it make sense for anyone in the sport to learn that skillset?
@ORTIZ17113
@ORTIZ17113 6 лет назад
Look up “Team MMA combat” there is a sport starting up that is actually team based MMA, I recommend you look into that and see if you can figure out what possible techniques can be used on multiple opponents 👍🏽

@@Skyldyel Team MMA is still in diapers, i don't think it will grow too much because it is simply too dangerous. I don't think anyone has organised formation unarmed combat, simply because thats not how wars are fought and its too dangerous to do as a sport.

You could technically make a softer bag by instead of doing polyethylene bag a silicone bag. It probably wouldn't break and would have more of a skin texture. Fill with ballistic or silicone gel instead of water perhaps, would swing more. But that'd be a different bag.

The water bags are different because they are variable loading and have a dampening effect. When I say variable loading it's this: At the bottom, you have all 150#s. At about half way up, you are only hitting on the water at the striking point and up. Think of it this way. A stack of plates. When you lift at the bottom, all the weight must be lifted but if you lift in the middle, it's much less. Most kicks are at the bottom of the bag, most hand strikes are half way up or more. I'd bet your undercuts hurt a lot more than your jabs. :-) The internal dampening of the water is also why they don't sway as much. When you hit the bag it sends a shock wave across the bag, which is some what reflected back to the point of contact. That energy is absorbed by the water. (the dampening effect.) Thanks for the review.

The leather bag completely filled with sand has no give. The problem with that is that all the shock of the punch (or kick) travels back into the arm. That creates problems down the road on the joints. You really need to have bags that give. Use of the heavy bag is different than hand or shin conditioning so routine practice with a sand filled bag will cause problems down the road.

Hey Ramsey, I've been watching your videos. I'm a father of 4 amazing kids, married to a beautiful wife, and life is just busy as can be. Seeing you train at 45 is nothing less than inspirational and I've been trying to find examples to keep fit best I can. I would really like to visit your gym one day in Shanghai. I have come to understand how realistic MMA training is, and am letting go much of traditional gimmicks and tricks to further focus training on specific combat. I respect your content. On my page not that you should visit, I put up some light bareknuckle sparring matches with Kung Fu. Went through phase you also experienced where I felt to prove the effectiveness of it. Haha. Made some noise. But, the evolution of fighting, or rather the truth of it, never changes but it is easy to miss because of all the Bullshido. My uncle trained me in Taiwanese Military Kung Fu, San Da, and Suai Jiao. The old school non watered down way. That is my base. Got into Wing Chun for the past 13 years but I'm deciding to walk away from it. I discovered too much gimmicks and wasteful forms and non proven theories that led me to believe it's a bunch of hoopla and bullshido. Some techniques work but nobody fights like that naturally. Chi Sao isn't real combat.

We both will be using bag just for cardio and to have fun with it since I used to do some boxing and muay thai myself. Thank u. @serre

Sooooo... the water bag swings less cause water absorbs the impact, and the energy you put in your hits is partially disperded, whereas instead the sand bag absorbs close to no energy. Great review…! One question - is it any quieter than other bags? I’m considering getting one to hang in my apartment (it won’t need a stand as I’ve got a pull up bar drilled into the ceiling), and just wary of the noise. I do have pretty thick walls and have rarely had noise complaints despite playing music unreasonably loud quite often, so I think I might be Ok regardless, but any thoughts on the noisiness would be greatly appreciated!

Interesting. I've never seen them before. I've got one somewhere that's got like a layer of gel stuff on the outside, which idk... But never seen these . Also I've never really seen your striking style before, so much as more grappling and stuff with just abit of striking. So that was also interesting to watch for me. I'm guessing you have a background in some sort of karate or similar art maybe? Which developed into more of a kickboxing style later on? Idk... You don't seem to have a straight up Muay Thai or Boxing type base to me anyway. But what do I know haha. Anyway it's an interesting style. Thanks again Sir. Ps: Why do you have a floor to ceiling ball so close to that cupboard/shelf thingy with gear on it? And bag near a fire box? 😄 Maybe it's just the angle but idk...looks to me like it may get in the way or balk me abit. Or worse some new student gets carried away and accidentally smashes it or breaks the fire box and sets off a fire alarm panic lol. Love your gym though.

THanks for the review Ramsey. I noticed that when you punch from the right you have a tendency to pull your leg up and down just before the impact 6:50 . After training kickboxing for 3 years, I noticed I had the same tendency, however recentelly my teacher insisted I should never do that, and that instead I should shoot the right punch never loosing contact of both feet from the ground. Since then I feel that I am slower and less efective. Any thoughts?

That’s a deliberately trained falling step- not a bad habit. A lot of really pedantic boxing coaches that don’t know any better will tell you it’s bad and wrong- I’m aware of this. I’ll make a video explaining why I do that one day. It’s immensely important, and very few striking coaches (at least in the west) understand this. Check out Coach Anthony Rodriguez (Coach Anthony here on RU-vid) he’s one of the few American boxing coaches I’ve seen that teaches the right falling step with the right straight. Everyone yammers about “footwork”, but this dude actually understands it.

Most of them I got on taobao.com. It’s a Chinese website where you can by anything that can be bought or sold in China for cheap, with 1-2 day delivery. Probably one of the greatest things about living in China.

I only train on bags without gloves, and I've found that there's a big difference in how various surfaces and fillings respond to the hand, and more specifically their tendency to grip the skin if your strike isn't clean (for example a tight hooking punch of the bag moves away a bit). My question is, does the rubber tend to grip and grab your skin more than normal bags? I would think it would be very bad for those cases.

You've tried to solve a problem that may not be a problem in the first place! :) Still wondering if the rubber does actually grip/drag/tear the skin more for glancing blows, or whether it's much the same as regular punching bags. I don't like wearing gloves, and like to be able to just wail on a bag for short bursts when I feel like it, without getting properly equipped. If the rubber is a bit grabby, it probably wouldn't suit my purposes, which is why I asked.

These bags are pretty low friction- very smooth surface. But it feels like your fist got got shot with a giant rubber band if you go bare knuckle.

Haha. OK, thanks for the feedback. Definitely sounds like a _try before you buy_ product then.

The Everlast Speedbag is a NEVERLAST. I seem to go through one per month. I put about 15 minutes in it per gay. At $45 each it is getting unacceptable.

I haven’t tried Everlast speed bags, but I change the speed bags at my gym about once a month from wear and tear. That’s pretty normal when you have a bunch of people using the thing every day- but if it’s just you going for 15 minutes a day and that’s destroying your speedbags, buy a different brand.

Do you have any stand alone bags like the wave master... I would like to hear your opinion on it
@RamseyDewey
@RamseyDewey 6 лет назад
I had a couple of Wavemaster XXL’s at my old gym in the USA. As far as free standing bags go, the XXL is the best I’ve used- but they’re really soft, really easy to break, and way to easy to knock over.
