For those still on the fence, here's some more about the game: >The encounters with NPCs like Elek are short mission chains, but they are paced really really well! There are special benefits for completing them, like getting help from a faction jumping in for a sector. >The main storyline is multi-layered. Just when you reach the end, there's more that unfolds. >There is an entire "Enhancements" system seperate from the perks to upgrade your ship. You find these in special places by scanning them. Some offer minor boosts, like 5% more energy; others offer HUGE bonuses but with a downside, like 25% more damage and infinite weapon energy, but no shielding for the ship. Ships can slot up to 3 of these and can redefine how you play a run! >The Codex, while only moderately sized, provides a ton of interesting background behind the setting to read through. HIVE, your AI companion, will also tell you more about the universe as you play. >The main character, Adam Roslin, might be off-putting at first.. But remember, he's a clone with only fragments of who he is. He grows into his own, and as confusion fades a pretty strong personality emerges. I went from disliking him to wanting more of him, i.e. a sequel! Hope that helps make your decision, cheers

The fact that they got this game running on the switch so well and it looks so good it’s pretty amazing for a AA studio. I can’t wait to see what they do with the second game in late 2022 or early 2023 with the next generation consoles. But this is absolutely amazing for switch owners.

I just bought this in 2022 on Switch and love it. I'm hooked and the way they integrate the characters with your character who dies over and over again is solid. Honestly the story is intriguing enough that it keeps me interested and the characters I meet along the way are enjoyable to talk to and do missions for. Also yes the 3rd control scheme is as perfect as it can get. I will say that having boost on the thumb stick gave me gamers thumb which hasn't happened since the NES days. So if you have a controller with extra back triggers just set boost to one of them and gamer thumb be gone. Anyway, awesome game and thanks for covering it!

Switching from control scheme A to C changes the game entirely! So much better that way. 🙂

Great review. I was a pre-alpha backer for this game on Steam. The Devs are really friendly and helpful to the fans (heck, they responded to those wanting a Switch version... ;) ). Ordered the PS4 physical version and eagerly await the physical Switch version (supposed to come out in a few months).

I have been watching loads of reviews in the last two days (all positive) since I first heard about this game. This review is by far the best though. I have purchased in the sale and have a SeriesX ready to play in 60fps later this evening, and I absolutely can't wait. This game will push me through 300,000GS within an hour or two and I'll stop achievements for awhile and just enjoy this incredible game. Let's GO!!

I picked up the other space game for Switch because out was cheaper and I instantly regreted it. This looks much better! Also keep an eye on REBEL GALAXY OUTLAW. Game looks amazing!

I know this review is a year old, but I just purchased the physical version of this game this week and I love it so far . Great review. I only have a Switch Lite so I get the blurry visuals . I put the cart in and checked for an update, but still nothing yet as of Oct. 2020. I wish they would allow you to add custom sound tracks too, that would be sweet. Oh yeah, Nintendo wouldn't allow me to register for my points with game either. Something about the region code. Oh well. Just thought I'd mention that .

I already have Elite Dangerous on my PC so I might get this for the Switch.

2:20 lovely color scheme ;) This looks really fun and I do like a good space shooter. Haven't played through one in ages, probably even back to Rogue Squadron. Was thinking of picking up Star Link but now I have a tougher decision between that and this one. Great review, Mark!

This game is awesome. I have the PC version The rougelike element is nicely done. You dont feel like your staring over at Zero with the story either since your interactions with NPCs carry over.

My first roguelike game. I loved every second of it, except maybe for weird music choices at times.

Nice review. Game looks solid bar that elevator music track. Price also seems more reasonable than many other titles. Now they just need to GTA the game, get us spacewalking and taking other crafts.

Was interested in this game as I would like some variety by owning a dog fight space shooter. I’m glad it exceeds expectations and looks solid. I also think it’s different to what I thought as I was guessing RPG elements not metroidvania style

Gyro is a *must* for Flight sims on console. And not like FPS gyro, but like a flight control grip. That is: Turn controller left, go left, until you recenter it.

I've got the same game on PC and friggin love it! It reminds me of some of the best space shooters from the N64.

This is on sale for $20 physical at Best Buy! I need to buy it, but also need to save for animal crossing Switch console!!

Playing with the cockpit view is really rewarding and tough!

Just purchased this game and tried giving it a shot, I liked how it feels to move the ship and all but ultimately I suck too much at the game to be able to enjoy it and ended up dying on the second enemy. I want to be able to enjoy it but I guess my hand-eye coordination isnt cut out for something like this.

Glad their games like this on switch, got both ps4 and switch with my brother and sometimes hard time trying find enough games for switch. We try balance Getting games for both consoles, so that way fi one person playing ps4 the other person can play the switch. So good to see this game

In docked mode, are the graphics good or blurry? Its my only worry.. anyone know how good to looks? I can’t stand blurry like warframe is terrible docked. Is this decent enough? 14/20 graphics? Damn. Wish Starlink was more flight combat and not that hovering on ground crap. I don’t like rogue likes lites but this looks great. Any help would be appreciated thanks! Good review.

thanks for such a good review. I preordered Everspace for Switch looking forward to having a space based jet jockey game to add to the collection. It was a toss up between Everspace and Starlink. After giving Everspace a go for the last couple of days, I really like the art direction but absolutely hate the controls. The total lack of motion controls are baffling especially at this point after motion control has been proven in key titles on Switch. It should be a standard as the devs had to know by testing their own game that dual analog sucks for accuracy and fine tune aiming especially under pressure. From my understanding, the devs said they simply couldn't get motion controls to work properly. I find this...suspect considering how well motion works in other Switch games. But, thanks again for the suggestion of the third control scheme in Everspace. After I type this, I'll try it. The default control scheme makes the game almost unplayable leaving me to wonder what the devs were thinking making it the default.

Man what a great review at first I thought this game was meh but after your highly detailed review and gameplay footage definitely a pick up

I found the combat extremely hard with the Switch controller. Not having having much fun with it..

Btw, everyone thinks this is inspired by FTL: Faster Then Light", an excellent rogue real time rts style game in space. I see some of that, but I see a lot more of something else. A little game called Subspace, from around 1998, and revamped into freeware Continuum. You can play it on Steam today, and I think it still has a stand alone app. Same early game of going around scavenging to build up your ship, same meter tied to firepower and defense, same infinite replayability where each run is different from the last one. Subspace is 2d and entirely multiplayer, with no story, but Everspace very much feels like a spiritual cousin to that game.

Got the Stellar Edition for $17, great value. Thanks for the tip about Control Scheme 3, way better!

This looks good, and I will probably pick it up, but nan I am hoping to someday get a new Escape Velocity Nova, I truly loved that game.

You said in your review that you played Freelancer, how would you say this compares? I really enjoyed Freelancer back in the day and haven't found a game quite like it since.
