Twilight of the spirits is one of the bestjrpg of all time. The story the battle mechanics and man the fucking music is insane. I picked it up as a kid when I saw it In ad for circut city lol. Severely underrated stands the test of time I could rant for weeks about this game and how much it means to me and my cousins. Thank you for doing it justice in this review brother!
The Crusade Without a Name could be shortened to The Unnamed Crusade, which would ironically be a Named Crusade, which is still better than the Overly Named Crusade that they went with.
Yes I find the games even these days boring and not worth it in fact after the 1st 3 PS1 games all the other games ie the PS2 Arc the Lad games were pure CRAP.
I’ve been spitballing comments about copying and pasting my old Boktai comments since that would be in line with a vid like this, but they all came out sounding rude. I don’t wanna do that to you >:( …wait does this count as a new comment then? Shit.
@Caspicum alright, here’s some of my faves. - I’d just copy and paste my old Boktai comments from the other Arc vids, but that seems like it would be pretty uninspired. - Feeling a little lazy today so… >proceeds to wheel out the cart w/ CRT - Gonna slightly edit and repost some old Boktai comments to gaslight you into thinking they’re fresh.
That's fine, my friend. I was probably a little harsh on it, but the fact that I can despise it, and you can enjoy it is what makes the internet great. Legit, if there's anything I said that you took issue with, let me know.
I haven't played Arc the Lad 1-3 nor End of Darkness, but i did play Twilight of the Spirits... a lot when i was a kid, a teenager and even now as young adult. So seeing a review on it and a recent one, cracking jokes here and there, and discussing the game make my eyes shine a lot, really liked that portion of the video (since is the one i skipped to watch instantly) There is some part of the story i wanna talk so **Spoilers just in case When the leaders of the parties leave it also shows a curious aspect of their journeys and bonding of themselves Darc leaves on his own, without telling anyone, searches the truth about his origins and faces somewhat the lack of unconditional kindness of his life through Lilia in various stages of the game so he kinda forces her to go with him when he could have gone alone with only her instructions and leaving her to her luck, i love how he struggles to keep his tough persona with her LOL Kharg on the other side, is outed by his party and everyone in his hometown the moment his awfully timed late puberty kicks in and reveals he is not a magical chosen one (tho kinda is, but the spirits did choose him and Darc), and seeks a parental figure in this case Samson for help, and in difference of Darc getting picked up by his teammates in Cragh Island, Kharg gets dropped in Yewbell by Samson LOL, i mean it's fair, Kharg teammates didn't have an Airship, but still didn't look for him or tried to get help, either lamented that they turned their backs at kharg (looking at you Paulette) or doing what they can, that it is investigating the landing zone the empire had. **End of spoilers So i have this video now in a special part of my fixations lol, that and i am also crazy about Quinton Flynn voicing Kharg, it gives to some more edits with MGS2 dialogue specially LOL
That Raiden shit blew my mind. Also, I dig that observation, the human/deimos divide in how they were treated by their own parties. I think because humans operate more on collective thought and care about socialization. So you've got the human party being whispered at by all the other humans, doubting their resolve in Kharg's leader status, and coming to terms with the betrayal of Nafia. On the other side of the coin, you've got the deimos tribe who are each a different Deimos, some aren't even pure deimos, and Bebedora isn't even strictly one, so there's no sense of collective identity outside of like I said in the video "Darc strong, me follow." Effectively, their ticket to survival has vanished and they want it back, ignoring all the emotions and feelings because they're deimos. Given that Darc is half-human too, he'd have to do some big betrayals to make them think twice about their allegiance, whereas humans are fickle and cancel dudes for saying the n word 20 years ago. It's a pretty slick divide that I completely missed.
Long form is tough. For me in particular, I find it hard to record a regular 10 minute video, my throat is not made for it. Anything even close to 30-40 minutes usually takes me 5-10 hours of recording about an hour per session. I'd love to do longer stuff, but I don't think I'm made for it. I should probably stop yelling when I record hey
@7:40 Oh! What is that? @1:09:27 I had to a make a double take, because I thought I was hearing things. Well played. @1:11:15 Normally, and even in context, I find such comments idiotic. But, they just fit your personality so well. Specially when used sparringly.
I'm liking the new commentary in this Arc the Lad compilation. Digimon World 1-4 compilation when? Hell I'll settle for random mid DS JRPGs like Sands of Destruction and Luminous Arc.
I actually gave some Luminous Arc a try recently, because I do want to do more DS stuff. Maybe once I finish one of the 30-odd videos I've got sitting around I'll explore it a bit more :^)
@@Caspicum First Luminous Arc game is really unbalanced and only carried by witch booba. Second game is very legit, but has its jank. Third game has a fanslation IIRC; never got properly localized because it was too niche. All I gotta say
1:08:50 to 1:09:30. I was just walking around the house. When i came back in the room this moment came on. My coffee went all over the place xD ffs man pick your words this is not gonna age well xD. You and i know your joking, upcomming simps will not xD. AAAAH cmon man you did it again. I come back with new coffee all cleaned up i press play and 1:11:00 until 1:11:25 hits. I have investigate this shit wtf is this even about? xD. Must be some crazy ass game xD
New comment: Arc The Lad kinda reminds me of Wild Arms in terms of never really rising out of the 7.5/10 zone. That said Wild Arms mistakes like 4 and 5 can't hit Arc's lows.
Working designs liked their hidden audio things. Specifically to call out pirates, since they were the only ones who would have heard them back in the day. I think everybody knew about the one on one of the Lunar discs but I think all of their games has one somewhere in the data.
You can look through the discs with that program I was shilling, and find them for yourself! This one was the final file on the entire disk, and it was a video format with no video, which screams 'Working Designs' to me. If I ever do Lunar, I'll chuck them in the video. also i gotta skim the Alundra disc if that's a common thing they do
Not saying your complaints aren't legitimate, but most RPG's had repetitive mindless battles. Everything from Final Fantasy to Dragon Quest had you repeating the same strategies from sunup till sundown and Arc II was no different. What made Arc II stand out was it had grid-based combat next to traditional RPG elements like dungeons and towns. Each of those elements on their own own was nothing special, but putting them together led to something unique. All those sidequests were a big deal too. Maybe they weren't all great, but most JRPG's back then never had so many. Even the story was was more involved and complex than other games. Parts of it haven't aged well, but it's important not to look at it in a vacuum.
I don't mind encounters, it's more about how they're used, and Arc 2 just threw them at you sporadically. A few games use them to show how dire a situation is, like that part in FF4 where you're defending Fabul, and in Alexandria on Disc 3 of FF9. Trying not to be too specific, but if you know, you know. I also like encounters, whenever I replay DQ1 I grind the hell out of my guy. They're fine when used appropriately, and I think being able to flee if you're fed up is also a key factor that means you don't have to marry every single encounter. Where I think Arc 2 faltered, and idk if I say this specifically in the video, if not, my bad, was that the battles are long, excessive, and ultimately feel worthless. I reckon the first half of the game is pretty good, it's about average for a JRPG, there's a nice spacing and pacing of encounters to story/sub-story, but then the back half is just packed. Every time you transition a map, it's a guarantee that you will fight the same 5 guys you fought moments ago and walked right through. That Volcano part where every time you get on a minecart means an encounter, and you've gotta ride like 6 of them, and also return there 3 or 4 times to hit all the side quests made me realise how careless the game is, again, more toward the back half, the front half is genuinely solid.
>shills program >doesn't show what program it is This has the same energy as someone on a forum asking for a solution to a problem, then killing the thread with "nevermind I figured it out" without elaborating further. You silly billy......😊
I wouldn't've been the first for sure, but I found maybe two other mentions of it, both of which were joked about 15~ years ago. It speaks to how buried this series became, and how nobody really cares about it. Damn shame too, there's probably a horde of stuff like this.
That's not a problem, I still needed to watch them so this works out 😁 Also, looking forward to longer videos from you, I think your writing style would be well suited for long form videos!
Love your reviews. I had Ark the lad 3 discs (scratched to hell) with no memory card back in my youth. Never got too far into it, and I always wondered how much I imagined. Or what that hell was even going on. Your review style is the best comidic and informative. Thank you for doing them.
God the tripping in End of Darkness is such a dumb design decision and takes me back to playing Brawl lmfao I have no clue why clunky movement is ever included in games, they never feel good.
I don't mind clunky movement in some games where it feels intentional. Castlevania 1 and 3 are a premo example where you've gotta slap a ring on the button every time you press it, but the game rarely gives you time to stop and think. At a certain point, you've gotta feel your progress, the brain becomes useless
A review probably shouldn't include you going through every story beat in the entire game. Like....think about who a review is for. Is it for people that haven't played the game and want to know if it's good? If so, they probably don't want to be spoiled on everything that happens. If it's for people that already played the game, then it's more like a spoilercast or something. Or a retrospective.
Because if someone is looking at a review they are probably trying to figure out if it's a game they want to try. Do you not get that? That has been the point of reviews since literally forever. Maybe consider criticism, especially since I'm not the only one who has said basically the same thing. I've already played all these games, I just saw a video about Arc the Lad and thought I'd give it a peek. @@Caspicum
All I'm saying is a review is a synonym for a retrospective. It's the same thing. There's no defined limit for a review, nor a retrospective, they are what you make them. If you don't wanna be spoiled on media, it's a good idea to avoid anyone talking about it in any capacity, no less games that aren't brand new. If you put yourself in the situation where someone's gonna talk about a game, you should expect to be spoiled.
@@Caspicum Those are not synonyms. I suggest you look at any review from any major outlet that exists. Or other reviewers on RU-vid. I don't even know whether to call what you're doing spoiling or literally just recounting every single significant event throughout the entire game. It's just not good. And if you want to continue doing it, by all means do as you please I'm not the video police. But you seem like a smart dude and I promise you can do better.
@@Nick051987 Wtf are you even talking about with the condescension of hes a smart dude and he can do better etc. This is a review series of games 20 or more years old if you are afraid of being spoiled find one of the 1000s of written reviews out there without spoilers, you sound exactly like the video police you claim not to be. just weird going on a 2 hour video of old games and then complain about spoilers like what did you expect? These type of videos are popular and good because most people probably won't play these games but are interested in the history and what the story is about.
There was a sixth disc that came with the PS1 pack called "The Making of Arc the Lad". Someone uploaded it to RU-vid! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QNiUfwOJifI.html
A full movie compilation of Casp videos, can't wait for "The Best of" version next! Ayo wth Casp, you said something about seamless addition then this pops out: _"Hey, it's me from 2 years in the future!"_ *this man has scammed us in broad daylight!*
