This video made me realize that not only was/is Hunter being the Golden Guard a tie in to the fact that he DEFINITELY has Golden Child Syndrome, him wearing the Golden Guard mask is also a physical representation of him masking, since he acts differently when wearing the mask as opposed to without it. Thank you for the epiphany!

Just remember that having a few of these symptoms does not necessarily mean a person is autistic. However, coding exists in television to signal cultural knowledge to certain demographics "in-the-know." In other words, Hunter may be coded autistic in the show, but a person like Hunter in real life might not have autism.

@TheKhfan001
@TheKhfan001 11 месяцев назад
@languid-4535 Hi! When something is (X)-coded, it means that it's showing traits commonly associated with X group of people without explicitly stating that they belong to said group. In this case, Hunter is coded autistic because he performs many of the same actions an autistic person may exhibit; stimming, disregarding social cues, hyperfixaton, etc. Sheldon from Big Bang Theory, Donatello from the new TMNT show, Sai from Naruto Shippuden, Wednesday Addams from the new Addams Family show are also examples. Hope this helps! 😁

Yup! Throughout the entire video I was thinking “this is “normal” stuff”. Not a single trait mentioned, followed up by a clip of Hunter doing something similar, seemed autistic. He just seems like another neurotypical kid. Most of the video claims he’s autistic because he simply loves a book series😭😭 it just doesn’t make sense to me. Stuff like pacing, avoiding eye contact, and other such things are just done to exaggerate emotions and create more effective storytelling (as in, even younger kids can understand what a character is feeling based on their actions alone). Not to mention they’re present in his character because he lived a super reclusive life during his formative years. He’s not autistic, he’s just figuring out how the world works after being abused.

@Cranberries4Crows
@Cranberries4Crows Год назад
TLDR: I think it's more likely Hunter has PTSD because Tism and PTSD share similar traits, but he has more little things that lead towards him having PTSD. Okay okay, I like this headcanon but I actually think Hunter has PTSD! It is considered a form of neurodivergence, and it shares many traits with autism. He flinches a lot, as if he's expected he's going to be hit. He is so used to it that he doesn't even try to defend himself. He disassociates a lot (which also makes him go non-verbal) and also he has trouble opening up to people. He does do a lot of stimming. The masking confidence thing can also be tied to PTSD in essentially the same way. They feel comfort in people not being able to see them. Eye contact is something people with PTSD don't do unless they're really comfortable with a person! He's made eye contact with Darius, Willow, Luz, and Gus before, people who he really cares about. People with PTSD struggle to connect with others, also as shown in the episode where he tried to make Willow and her team join the Emperor's Coven. He doesn't understand how bad things are, and he doesn't pick up on their unhappiness until a while afterward. Also, people with PTSD can come off as blunt, and sometimes even rude, when really they just think a bit differently because of traumas. The meltdowns and bursts of anger also tie into their frustrations with their state of self. Also, I think when he said idc too, I think her meant he didn't care to know who they were. People with autism and PTSD both share a lack of self-expression. I do agree that Gus, Luz, and Hunter are probably neurodivergent. I feel like Gus is more leaning toward Autism, and Luz almost definitely has ADHD. People with PTSD are jumpy and notice things very easily, especially when they are tied to their trauma, even if they don't know it. I wouldn't consider the times when Hunter is possessed as anything having to do with him because..well..he's possessed.. ANYWAY, you can do your own research and fact-check me if you'd like. Not saying Hunter isn't Autistic, it's really all headcanon anyway, and if you wanna HC him as Autistic, then knock yourself out! :)

I have diagnosed ADHD, so this may be an ADHD thing, but the scenes of Hunter walking in the background not really responding to anything(The scenes in For The Future you have marked under "Acting like an "NPC"") remind me of when I zone out or get stuck in my head for extended periods of time. Especially considering that most of these scenes take place right after Flapjack's death, I don't really see this as an autistic trait. I'm sure I would probably act similarly, as it is an easy way to keep my mind off of things I don't want to be thinking about. Alright, i can relate to a lot of this and a lot of hunter's character as a whole because sci-fi and wolves was literally me as a teen -Rubbing skin as stimming: I rub my thumb and middle finger together a lot, i also find typing and games that focus a lot on quick hand reflexes to be a good way to maintain my hyperactivity -The leg shake not so much, but i've done it once or twice. -Vocal stimming: Whenever i'm excited about stuff, i always quietly scream "Yesss" -Pacing: Totally. I love just getting out of my chair to just walk in circles around my room. -Hand flapping: When my excited stimming isnt vocal, i usually like to shake my fists a lot. -"Cringy" special interests: I always get so over excited whenever new star wars content drops, my excitement when they came out carried my opinion on the sequels. They aren't Attack of the Clones or Revenge of the Sith, but they're good. -Emphasizing by talking about myself: Yeah, totally. It's one thing i'm always like "Why the hell do i do this and why do i always forget i do this minutes after i'm thinking about this?" -Masking confidence: This is why i'm always online and will never do a face reveal. -Unmasking: Totally, i have to always keep myself entertained in some way or i'm left with my anxiety-filled brain -Scripting: I said Obi-Wan's signature line "Hello there" in the past ONCE. and now i say it EVERY TIME I GREET A STAR WARS FAN. -Avoiding Eye Contact: whenever i cried i always would put my eyes on my knees to hide my face -Social Cues and Norms: Oh my god i still cannot adapt to society, i sit in the weirdest positions, i do make a few other mess-ups but not sitting in the way everyone else does is the one that i always am reminded of when explaining why a character is autistic and they get to the social norms part -Acting without second thought: I always trust my gut before trusting my brain. -Going nonverbal: Cant relate that much, for me it's honestly the opposite when i'm doing something stressful -Meltdowns: I would go into a gamer rage whenever i was at my limit -Shutdowns: Whenever i'm super stressed and dont want anything to escalate further i just try to seperate myself from everyone else and focus on me -Struggling to express emotion: Yeah, i used to never talk to my family about shit because i couldnt even process anything when i needed it. -Small details and hearing senses: I swear man, everytime my old-ass fan makes a noise i dont recognize, i flinch hearing it and immediatly think "Oh my god it's gonna fall," and also whenever i'm watching gameplay and the youtuber does something and talks about it, i'm just like "You dingus that's not what that does, that's not how that works, check the wiki next time." -Acting like an NPC: totally. Now, enough about myself, traveller. We shall focus on you, as the customer is right. Do you have an interest in my wares? -You also forgot struggles with not being good enough, it could be just a normal thing, but it's another common thing i find both myself and Hunter struggling with.

I’ve never been diagnosed with autism by a doctor but i fit with pretty much all of the signs of it. I’ve pretty much ignored it for most of my life since i thought it was normal. I read an article about it and apparently boys get diagnosed more than girls because their signs are more pronounced, while girl’s signs can go more unnoticed. I’m thinking that’s probably why i never really thought to talk to anyone about it, since i thought it was just normal kid behavior, but I’m realizing now that i might have been wrong. Hunter was always my favorite character of the owl house since he acted a lot like me but didn’t know that they were autism signs until now. So i learned something interesting today!

One of my stims is that when i get excited and I’m around a person i like, i drum my hands on them, i don’t do it hard but i do it to my sister a lot and one day while we both had friends over doing a film project for school, so i was drumming on her like i usually do since i was excited (i was using lollipops for some reason) and she kept calling me the c word. It kinda irritated me and i may have smacked her a little bit too hard on the head, then she went on and made this huge scene in front of everyone crying and saying how I’m such a horrible sister because i always hit her! I don’t even hit her i just drum my hands on her back or shoulders when i get happy or excited, i do that with all my friends! She ended up getting me screamed at by my dad while i was just trying not to cry in front of them, went outside for a bit trying to calm down so we could finish filming but when i came back in, my mom asked me if i was okay. I almost burst into tears right as soon as i started talking, told them i needed a break, i got up and practically ran to my room, shut my door and into my dog’s fur for a while before my mom came into my room to talk with me telling me that we needed to film and that i won’t have to see her after we finish filming. This was a few weeks ago but I’m still pretty upset about it. She embarrassed me in front of everyone and I’m assuming when she went back to her room with her friend she was talking shit about me. I’ve never been so humiliated than in that moment and i still try to avoid her as much as possible so she doesn’t get me into trouble again. She does this shit all the time! She mostly does it to my parents, not in front of people but she makes a huge scene out of nothing then starts crying and runs off to her room and we just sit there like ‘wtf’. My sister’s fine when she’s not doing that shit but goddamn does she piss you off when she does. She is gonna be one hell of a Karen when she’s an adult! Kinda turned this into a rant but that’s the story of how i got screamed because i was stimming and my sister irritated me so i hit her a bit harder (keep in mind that it wasn’t that hard, imagine knocking on door level)

Pretty interesting. We can't be quite sure though because for each and every one of these behaviours you can trace it back to his life at the castle, which could also mean they're just trauma responses. 7:36 just a fyi, autistic peoples brains are not underdeveloped. thats not why its a disability. there is some tissue missing in certain parts according to some studies i guess?? autistic brains actually tend to grow much faster as kids than neurotypical ppl, but they do start shrinking earlier (mid twenties). the reason its a disability is because our brains work entirely different from neurotypicals which makes it hard to function in a world not built for us. as well as the sensory issues, shutdowns, meltdowns, and autistic burnout.

As for talking about ourselves in relation to others' struggles, a lot of neurotypical people mistakenly see this as us being self-centered. However, given how often autistic people are misunderstood, and how often neurotypicals try to act like they can understand what we're dealing with when they really don't, we see the discussion of our own similar problems as a way of reassuring the other person that we do understand and can relate to what they're going through, and that we're not just giving them ignorant and empty platitudes that don't apply to the situation at hand.

Some of these scenes feel a bit forced into the idea of Hunter having autism. I actually like the idea of him having PTSD. People who have PTSD can have alike symptoms to that of autism and other neurodivergent things whether they had it before or after the traumatic experience. I might have autism or ADHD or both based on the things I did as a toddler/child, but it's hard to tell because I went through some traumatizing stuff and have been diagnosed with PTSD which has similar symptoms. Honestly, it could go both ways, but I like the PTSD idea more. We also have to consider that he's from another dimension and probably wasn't allowed to do kid stuff. Some people who have gone through childhood trauma can regress when they are older and have child-like traits. I certainly went through that and so did my siblings and mom(my mom was groomed by my dad as a teen). This is just my couple cents though.

@@josephoda I mean, that's the thing though, hunter doesn't seem to get obsessed to that level. Or like for exemple, what's presented as a meltdown and a shutdown in that video are really tame compared to the actual thing. A shutdown is so much more than sitting down sad for 5seconds. And also a lot of the things that are actually atypical in that video are things that are more consistennt with trauma responses and considering hunter's past that's probably what I'd look for first rather than autism. Having characters you can relate to is fine, but I don't think it's helping us if we use things that don't represent autistic experiences very well and present them as autistic traits, it kinda undermines the experience.

@Laezar1
@Laezar1 Год назад
Ok I'm autistic and this video rattles me the wrong way. Not just the traits presented but also the way they're presented. Especially applying them to hunter who has evidently gone through child abuse and be given a position of power as a kid still which is *not* healthy. He hasn't been socialized normally and given the chance to be a kid and mature so interpreting trauma as autism is a big problem in my opinion. Especially since the abuse he received wasn't directed towards things that are autistic traits. Now I don't mind people having their headcannons (though if you aren't autistic yourself (I don't know) it's kinda cringe tbh) and I'm not even opposed to the headcannon of hunter as autistic, but that's really not the way to do it imo. That was the TL;DR now I'm going to go through the video and explaining where something is either misrepresented, the explanation given isn't accurate or said in a way that's in poor taste or when the explanation is right but the behaviour shown doesn't really coincide. 1) Stimming. "Maintaining hyperactivity" isn't a thing. I think you're thinking of stimming against beinng understimulated but that's not "hyperactivity". Also stimming is used a way to ground yourself too (just added detail). For the record stimming is a universal behaviour, it's just more prominent and common with autistic people. That's probably the one thing that was the least of a stretch (except the rawr is clearly not a stim he's miming a wolf to darius and he does that while showing his shirt, that could be a stim if he did that in other instances that have nothing to do with wolves but here it's clearly not). 2) SI : Maybe don't call special interest cringe. Plus you can't count expressing things in "childish" ways as an autistic trait when you're talking about a kid lmao. Other than that sure, him being a bit of a nerd isn't inconsistent with autism. Though he also doesn't feel like, extra nerdy? I mean stuff like talking about cosmic frontiers outside of conversations about cosmic frontiers relating things to a special interest that other people might not see the link to. Not that all autistic people do that, but that'd be a more blatant autistic way to have a hobby. But yeah this one isn't too bad either. It's mostly saying SI are cringe that annoyed me. 3) Empathizing by talking about himself : Ok that one I find annoying cause it's not "struggling to relate to other people's problem if I can't relate them to myself". It's just a different way to show support where instead on focusing on emotional support it's a focus on making the person feel like they're understood. Also and more importantly he does NOT do that in those two scenes. In the first scene he's just trying to defuse the situation and he realizes how he's in a similar situation and also has anxiety about it. It's not him giving support by relating with things he has experience with, it's him trying and failing to give support at all. In the second scene he's not relating things to himself in that way either, he talks about himself because willow thought she did something wrong towards hunter and he makes sure she knows she didn't, that has to necessarily involve talking about himself but he's not relating willow's experience to his own. (this one is even more clear cut not that at all than the first). 4) "Masking confidence" : The reason autistic people like to conceal their face is typically either to avoid eye contact or because it's more comfortable to have less to worry about when you don't have to deal with your facial expressions and how they're perceived. That's really not the reason hunter is more confident here, it's just that it allows him to assume the persona he was assuming as the golden guard, the version of him that felt like he was in control, that had power and was respected. Arguably you could relate that to the social concept of masking and simulating personas is one way to do that (it's easier to be confident when you're talking as a character than as yourself), but just wearing a mask isn't an autistic trait and in this case it's so deeply rooted in his trauma that there is no way it's fine to count it. 5) Unmasking : Again this is more related to who he is as the golden guard here and how he's accepting being hunter. Also he isn't "unmasking" in the sense of autistic unmasking, like, he's literally taking off an accessory but unamsking is about stopping to "mask" your autistic trait (which has nothing to do with physical masks it's a metaphor), and like, he isn't doing that, he isn't displaying more autistic traits during or after that scene. 6) Scripting : Yeah same as n°4 though it definitely shows he needs to play the "role" of the golden guard because that's not who he is as a person, but again I see this more as a kid being thrown in the role of an adult, He isn't playing the golden guard as a way to socialize with people which is what masking is about. Like at best all those points about masking could be seen as an allegory of autistic masking but they're not it themselves. 7) Avoiding eye contact : Ok that one is really really bad. First he isn't even avoiding eye contact here, he's just in his own head. But even if he did avoiding eye contact when in a stressful social situation isn't unusual at all for allistic people. It's an autistic trait when you do that by default, even when talking to someone directly in a face to face conversation setting. This one is even worse cause you show hunter looking directly at luz right after. 8) Social cues : In the first scene he doesn't seem unaware that luz is having a difficult moment, the facial expression change is more that it sinks in what she's upset about exactly and that it's pretty bad. The kneeling scene is actually the opposite of not understanding social cues. It's just culture clash but he's respecting social norms he's just been in an environnement where it was normal to do that. 9) Impulsivity : No. First of all impulsivity is an ADHD trait, not an autistic trait. They're very often commorbid that's true (I'm both), but it's not an autistic trait. Second he isn't shown to be impulsive in any of those scenes. I guess the first kinda counts but eager kid raising hand thinking they have the answer and realizing they struggle to formulate it is like, very universal especially when learning new language. Though I can grant that one I guess. Touching the weird goop is arguably not smart but I wouldn't call that impulsive he's just examining what the weird goop is. But the really bad one is showing a scene where he is literally *possessed* by belos and it's explicitly not his normal behaviour. 10) Going non verbal : Hunter literally speaks in the scenes you're showing. Like... not even sure what to say. (not the last one but he's got a vine over his mouth the moments he trie to lmao)
@Laezar1
@Laezar1 Год назад
11) Meltdown : Ok that one is another REALLY bad one. That's not a meltdown, like at all, like it's such a mild reaction to the immense amount of stress he's under. Also everyone can have meltdown. What makes autistic meltdown uniques is the way we regulate stress. We take longer than neurotypical to go back to a baseline level of stress which means we can have a lot of accumulated stress even long after stressors aren't affecting us anymore which can make us react to something in a way that seems disproportionate but that's because we're still holding the accumulated stress so the small thing that triggers a meltdown is more like the last drop in the bucket that people don't realize is still full. (so actually no small changes are typically not enough at all to avoid a meltdown, and getting distracted from an impending meltdown isn't enough, what's needed is some actual rest when overwhelmed) 12) Shutdown : Again that's NOT a shutdown. A shutdown looks a lot closer than what gus did with the illusion coven head (I mean, it's the same general vibe, without the magic obviously) where you're completely unable to process the rest of the world because it's just too much so you close yourself as much as possible. Like, the only thing reminiscent of a shutdown here is hunter's position but that's like a typical "sad" position. A shutdown is so *much* more intense than that. It's something that's really hard to snap out of. (also for additionnal information : it's not really meaningfully different from a meltdown, in that they're both different reaction to the same situation of accumulated stress, a meltdown is just when you deal with it by externalizing it and letting it all out and a shutdown is when you deal with it by trying to cut yourself from the world and stress as much as you can until your stress level is lowered). Please don't call that a shutdown cause it's not and that trivializes the experience to pretend that it is. 13) Misuses of grammar : Uh... misusing grammar is not an autistic trait, like, not sure where you got that from. But also he isn't misusing grammar in that scene... like what? 14) Struggling to express emotions : I mean yeah but that's also and actually most and foremost a *trauma* thing (and also toxic masculinity thing but that's beside the point =p). But honestly... like... hunter isn't really struggling to express emotions here? Like, it's a pretty healthy way to express himself considering the situation. 15) Gravitation towards one another : No, no that one's good =p use weirdos have to stick together. 16) Bad at lying : That one's fine too. I also want to add that for some (not all but me yes that's why I bring it up =p) autistic people, lying can be like, actually physically difficult, like not even just lying poorly, just the act of lying at all even when it'd be the best thing to do. So if you know an autistic person who can't lie at all please don't ask them to, don't take advantage of it and don't get upset if they answer a question truthfully when you wanted them to lie. Thank you ^^ 17) Noticing details/good sense of hearing : So, yes and no. It's really just an attention thing, the sense of hearing of autistic people isn't meaningfully different but we don't tune out a lot of background information, which can lead to noticing more details but can be overwhelming. It also leads to being able to notice some things that make it look like we have super hearing, for exemple hearing electricity humming, but that's not that we hear better that's because it's the type of sound allistic brains typically naturally tune out completely. That explanation aside though... that's not what happens in that scene? like, at all? like, he's literally possessed and hallucinating. in the first few scenes you show and then he's being paranoid and hypervigilant in the others. That's very different. 18) Acting like an NPC : What? the hell did you say? That's like, way offensive. Like no. No. Everything about this is wrong. First that's just not a thing and it's judgemental. Then autistic brains are NOT underdeveloped, that's not a thing. It's a neurodevelopemental disability because it affects the way brain develops yes, but that doesn't mean autistic people are less developped, our brain develops *differently* that's not the same thing. Also wtf this is again a scene where it's literrally belos controling hunter. And the scenes after are just him walking or pacing, just... no don't call people NPC wtf. 19) Somehow the last one is actually the best one, since being out of synch with people can happen often when you have difficulty with social cues. But again like... he's a kid who didn't have a childhood, him being socially stunted doesn't make him autistic. There, done, some of those really upset me tbh, like don't go "happy autism acceptance month" after calling autistic people NPC's. yikes.

Being implusive is adhd trait but it can also be a autistic trait and what if the youtber doesn't even read it ?
@Laezar1
@Laezar1 Год назад
@@michalelkin-bronner13 I mean, autistic people can be impulsive but it's not an autistic trait. There are autistic trait that makes it seems like it's impulsivity, like not having a filter in social interaction, oversharing etc makes it feel like the person doesn't think before talking but the cause isn't impulsivity it's just difficulty recognizing something isn't appropriate or safe to say in a situation. And the high amount of ADHD/ASD co-morbidity probably plays a role in that perception too. And yeah I don't care if they read it, some amount of people will read it and hopefully it'll help with nuancing the video. I'm just trying to inform people if possible but also just kinda needed to let it out cause the video annoyed me.

Neurotypicals can display autistic traits as well, just not as much as those who are autistic.

The issue is that a lot of these are common in certain personality types and even the different ticks manifest in non autistics people quite often. Of course, I cant deny I match many of them myself lol XD. Another important thing is that autism as a syndrome is not neccsarily diagnosable by the prescence of anyone specific trait as some syndrome are.

I recently got diagnosed with autism about a year ago now, and I just realized that I could have used this video as a reference to help me realize how I truly related to Hunter. Not my diagnosed depression, but my newly-diagnosed Autism!

i have a few things to say about this. hunter did avoid eye contact in those few scenes, but that was more to add to the emotion of the scene. in all the other scenes you showed, he is perfectly capable of holding a normal amount of eye contact. and with being nonverbal, it’s impossible for a nonverbal person to just talk minutes after they went nonverbal. if he were nonverbal in those moments, it would have lasted much longer. and the scene where willow was talking to him and he went “nonverbal” you described going nonverbal as a response to stress, but how would willow talking to him make him stressed? and a special interest is completely different from an obsession. a special interest consumes your whole day and it’s all you can think about. and that term is exclusively used for autistic people. on the other hand, an obsession is just being a really big fan of something. ppl with special interests prefer to ONLY talk about that. they bring it up all the time, and infodump at random/inappropriate moments. these are just the external symptoms of autism, tho. but hunter doesn’t seem to match up with the symptoms you described and it doesn’t seem like you have a good idea of what autism actually is, so please do your research (im not trying to be mean, because all these symptoms are more closely related to his trauma and i think it’s more likely that he has ptsd than autism.)
@salem2130
@salem2130 Год назад
also the fact that you described a special interest as “nerdy/childish” really shows how little you know about ASD. A special interest can be literally anything; a color, a medical condition, a certain type of clothing, literally anything you can think of has the possibility to be a special interest. it’s more shown in the media that autistic people have special interests in like video games, trains, animals, etc., but while those seem childish to some, please do not label someone’s special interest as childish.
@kalenkotalik

@@salem2130 I never said that his special interests was childish just that others in the show of people who hate hunter may find it childish
@kalenkotalik
@kalenkotalik Год назад
@@salem2130 also, a special interest is something that a person takes pride in with their personalities, they may dress up as someone or something related to the interests, or overshare information, it doesn’t have to be something that they focus on 24/7 bc a lot of autistic people and especially adults can’t focus on it all day bc of school or work
