Ranking each episode of Avatar from worst to best.
A bit less heavy on the jokes than my usual stuff, I'm really passionate about this show and wanted to talk in depth about it and give it the respect it deserves. Sort of a big switch up from Game of Thrones but y'know I just make videos about whatever.

That’s what I’m saying, also when he talks about filler episodes being bad, that pisses me off because they’re not just fillers, they show growth in the characters and give insight to the way their world works. The Southern Raiders gets 40?!?! I think it's one of the top 10 episodes for me because of MANY reasons. You get to see how Katara's and Zuko's relationship goes from her trusting him in Ba Sing Se, to him willing to go to any extent to regain her trust. Also, the BLOODBENDING!! You get to see the horror in Zuko's eyes when he finds out Katara can bloodbend. It's such a powerful scene which is really overlooked upon. And the way he is in awe of what Katara can do when they face the guy. It shows the development of Katara's skills so so well. It shows how far she has come from the first episode. Also I love how they showed the guy who killed Katara's mother - he's just living a boring life, and he has a commanding mother, and he's sick of it and he literally has nothing in his heart. The line where he's like "I'm so sorry, you deserve revenge, maybe you could take my mother?" (idk I'm not sure what the exact quote is). Alsoooooo it shows how Team Avatar saves Zuko after Zuko's and Azula's fight, but Azula has to save herself. It reinforces how Azula spirals down in the final episode and in the comics after the show. Azula being feared, and not likeable is one of her weakest points. And the way Zuko is concerned when she's falling: "She's... not gonna make it. [...] Of course she did." It ties in so well with the comic Smoke and Shadow where Zuko is telling Ursa that if nothing else, Azula knows how to survive. Plus the episode shows how Zuko can finally be happy and funny with Team Avatar. Another thing I love about the episode is Aang's advice to Katara. It shows his character so well. And of course, Sokka being the comedic relief character when he expects Suki to come, but Zuko shows up instead. Every. Single. Second. Of that episode. Is so. Perfectly. Created.

And I also feel like his line at the end of the Kyoshi Island episode "I treated you like a girl, when I should've treated you like a warrior" still shows him clinging to his sexist values a little bit, so that him becoming woke doesn't leave the viewer with that much whiplash
@marshmallowvampire8503
@marshmallowvampire8503 2 года назад
I believe that. Also, something I really love about how they portrayed sexism is that Sokka isn't resented in any way. I love that it's portrayed as something he lead himself to believe due to traditional gender roles in the village, and that his dad wasn't there to teach him healthy masculinity (or at least that's how I understand it). Not even Pakku who was arguably meaner about it wasn't put down or punished for their limited view point. Pakku just says "this is my culture, and these are my beliefs" and I respected that despite his bluntness, he didn't do it out of hate. As a matter of fact, after Katara tried learning water bending from Aang, I think it was her unwillingness to be humble or talk it out was what made it escalate.
@sawyerharris3721
@sawyerharris3721 2 года назад
I think it's also not entirely true that he couldn't turn around that fast. Sokka isn't and was never a complete asshole. He's just a kid himself trying to find his place in the world as a "man" without his father and mother there to guide him, clinging to normalcy through outdated beliefs. He can recognize when he's been bested. And more importantly, he wants to improve himself and get stronger so he can beat the fire nation. That's always been his goal. To protect from and overcome the great evil that took his parents in the first place. He saw that Suki had that kind of strength, and he humbled himself so that he could learn it too. Plus, like the other commenter said, he told Suki he should have seen her as a warrior, not as a girl. He never said that girls aren't what he thought they were, lol.

I think The Desert is by far the most underrated episode of Avatar. It really shines a light on how important Appa is to the team. Not just as a mode for transportation, but what keeps Team Avatar together. When he's gone, they struggle. A lot. I especially love Aang's grief in this episode. He's so distraught he can barely talk to his friends without getting angry, and my jaw dropped when he killed that buzzard because his pacifist morals took a backseat when he was so blinded by his own rage. This is also a super good Katara episode. She's clearly the mother of the group, and some people criticize her for that. But I think this episode really brings out some of the best of that nature, forcing her to carry the team when they're all falling apart. And her face when she pulls Aang down from his Avatar state flip out says it all: everyone's tired of this suffering, especially Katara, as she lets Aang cry on her shoulder. Also, cactus juice will never not be funny for me. 8/10

I agree! Honestly for me, Aang's grief alone makes it such a pivotal episode. Appa isn't just they're way to get around, he isn't just Aang's pet, he is one of his dearest companions. They chose each other very young, and have come this far together in life. Appa and Bumi are essentially the last living friends Aang has, and for him to think he was lost forever was absolutely devastating. For me, it was almost a culmination of all the anger and grief he has been feeling since being found in the iceberg. When he found Monk Giatso's body at the Southern Air Temple, he had a similar reaction. But Giatso is gone, and Appa was still something Aang had to hold on to from his life before he ran away, from before he had to face the reality of war and destruction. Afterall, he's just a child with so much to hold on his shoulders. This was such a heart wrenching breaking point for him 💔

Crossroads of Destiny is my hands down favorite. On the best season finales of all time. It really is the empire strikes back of this show. Azula launches herself to the mount rushmore of tv villains, the battle is probably among the best in the entire show, the killing of the avatar state is an amazing development and of course there is the absolute gut-punch of Zuko siding against team avatar. Its subverting expectations AND also not out of character for him. He is just not there yet. It is so good and layered and extremely well written and makes you so desperately want to see whats next. It is the ultimate testament that this is not just a kid's show.
@michaelhays
@michaelhays Год назад
It's also my favorite. Zuko's betrayal of Iroh really is a gut-punch, especially given all the work the show has put in over the past two seasons to make you root for him. And it sets up the best redemption arc of any fictional character I've seen.
@tommyl.dayandtherunaways820
The original plan apparently was indeed for Zuko to join team avatar at this time. But at the last minute the writers decided that they could still do more to fill out Zuko’s arc. And honestly I’m glad they did, I think Zuko confronting Ozai to tell him personally that he was going to help Aang take him down was the perfect way for him to leave the Fire Nation and join the heroes. And the great thing about the betrayal in crossroads was that it felt so genuinely shocking. Azula really was that good of a manipulator that she was able to temporarily undo everything Uncle Iroh had tried to teach Zuko over the course of season 2. I agree, I think Crossroads is the perfect season finale, I would say it’s definitely one of my favorite episodes of the series.

It's not acknowledged by the show or needs to be, but Sokka's sexism arc has been poetically completed by the finale as he's working with two strong and capable girls (Toph and Suki) and depending on them, which he would've laughed at a year prior.

I don’t think Sokka was sexist, he was raised in a small tribe where he was the only man and was told to defend the women and children. It is normal in water tribe culture for women to not fight, like in the North Pole. The Kioshi warriors were the first females he fought against and he was raised to protect women, but he immed accepts them as warriors and admits he is wrong. The “sexism” arc end there.

@@thewhisper4269 Roku was a very flawed mentor for sure, but what I like is that he was flawed for realistic reasons. Roku, like any person, no matter how wise or powerful, was of his time and shaped by his experiences. Roku never forgave himself for failing to end Sozin’s life which could have prevented the hundred years of war and countless deaths and genocides that followed. From Roku’s point of view, the only thing that mattered was ending the war and Ozai as quickly as possible, at all costs. Learning the elements out of order? Aang sacrificing his pacifism to kill Ozai? These were simply things that needed to be done to atone for Roku’s mistakes, from his perspective. The Puppetmaster is one of my favourite episodes in the show, because I love learning just how far you can stretch your bending, just what exactly the limits are. Which makes me sad, because Katara doesn't use these for the rest of the show. Ignoring the fact that she blood-bends only once, since she's a nice person, she doesn't draw water from plants or people around her, she doesn't draw water from the air, none of it. She has 2 moments of being creative with how she gets water: her sweat and blood-bending, and she only does EACH of these once. Bitter Work is also really good, since I love the idea of learning ways of using one form of bending by observing another. That's part of why Crossroads of Destiny (or is it the episode before?) holds a special place in my heart: Zuko firebends by waterbending "This episode also includes Toph inventing metalbending because she fucking feels like it" Ah, Toph being Toph. Fuckin' love her Day of Black Sun, Part 1, is also one of my favourite episodes, purely because Iroh pulls a "I like you, don't come to school tomorrow"

I used to dislike the desert episode (S2E11). The problem / emotional chaos was somewhat too much for me. However, rewatching it as an adult, I really admire Katara’s maturity, and I grew loving this episode! She shines while Sokka and Momo were high on cactus juice, Toph couldn’t see on the sand, and Aang was coping with losing Appa. I mean.. Remember earlier when Toph first joined the gaang and being selfish carrying her own weight which triggered Katara so much during the Chase (S2E8)? Well, I think Aang basically did the same on the desert when he left the gaang briefly in search for Appa. Katara didn’t get angry about Aang leaving and was focused more on surviving and getting the rest of the gaang to safety. Later when Aang rejoined, Katara was also understanding and empathetic. She wasn’t triggered and didn’t lash out like when she was to Toph. Probably because Katara knew how important Appa is to Aang. She tried to navigate the desert using the stars and map from the library when normally Sokka does this. She remained calm when Aang freaked out after acquiring a little bit of water from the cloud. She helped Toph shoot rocks at the buzzerwasps. And most importantly, she stays and comfort Aang when he went full Kyoshi during their encounter with the sandbenders. Oof, I wish I can be this mature. “ We’re getting out of this desert and we’re going to do it together. Aang, get up! Everybody, hold hands! We can do this. *we have to.* “ CHILLS

It proves her kindness. Katara herself has demonstrated that she will treat people well, even after her own traumas of seeing her mother die and aang nearly on the other side. She has proven time and time again that she will do good to others who need it, demostrated by the tale of toph and katara. I feel katara is a very strong character. Every single time, when aang goes on a rampage in the avatar state, she never shows fear. Even in the desert, sokka's first instinct is to *run* From this, I believe her driving force is to make sure other people do not suffer the same fate as how katara has, for the kindest people are often the ones who were hurt the most.

I'm always flabbergasted when people wonder about the realism of Zuko's getting sick. People can feel physically ill because they think they should be, or if something upsets them a lot. Some throw up when you *talk* about something particularly upsetting! Maybe it's just because it's something I've been through. Sometimes the subconscious stuff in our head does some crazy stuff.

I respectfully disagree with Tales of Ba Sing Sa as #1. I've always thought Finale part 3 was the obvious best episode. Don't get me wrong the Tale of Iroh is probably the best 4 min in the whole show (a close contender would be the Final Agni Kai) but the rest of the tales seem like they get overrated just to lift this episode higher up people's rankings. Sokka and Aang's stories are overall pretty boring. Katara and Toph's story is ok. Momo's story is cleverly written as a short preview of Appa's lost days but still just good. Zuko's Tale is interesting and needed for his character growth but I can't help thinking how Zuko lighting the candles felt out of character for him. He got mad at Uncle Iroh for warming up his tea but Zuko goes and performs a fire bending performance in the middle of a courtyard. Hard to imagine no one saw it or that Jin wasn't smart enough to figure out Zuko was a firebender. The overall episode is so good in one 4 minute sequence that on repeat viewings of the episode I sometimes go straight to the Iroh tale and skip the rest of the episode. Maybe watch the Zuko and/or Momo one but definitely skipping the others. I'd still put it in my top 5 though I'm not crazy.

I thought Sokka's tale was cute and funny, Aang's was boring, Toph and Katara's had great character moments for the both of them, Zuko's was cute and he should've been with the earth girl rather than Mai, and Iroh's was a masterpiece. I do think a lot of people aren't looking at the episode as a whole though and are just looking at Iroh's.

@Puckett.
@Puckett. 2 года назад
@@thecautionbandi649 Sokka's tale doesn't seem as good to me after a few repeat viewings. I think it's possible that Zuko could've ended up with Jin it just would've required a lot of different of a story. If Mai betrays Azula in the Boiling Rock and doesn't end up with Zuko in the finale it would've felt extremely cruel to do that to Mai. Also in order for Zuko to end up with Jin it would've required a much longer finale. Maybe Zuko meets up with her in the final Tea Shop scene but it would've needed at least one conversation between the two about the situation. So the story would need to find another way of doing the boiling rock betrayal probably just not have the betrayal at all which would mean Azula has to have another reason to breakdown in the final episodes. And we'd need to extend the Finale to include the Jin/Zuko conversation. If you extend the Finale I'd rather have Zuko finding his mom or an Azula conversation vs a Jin conversation.

Same, altho for different reasons. I would've ranked Momo's lower, for the same reasons he doesn't like Nightmares and Daydreams: I love Momo, he is one of the funniest characters, but there are specific episodes where the fact that he is a comedic side character makes him hard to take seriously when given the spotlight. I would rank Sokka's a little higher just bc it's not too stupid and maybe a little personal bias (rhymes and stuff feel clever to me). Also, while Aang's is cool it to was a little slapstick for me.

i think Ozai’s scenes in part 3 and part 4 of the finale are underrated. the most terrifying scene in the whole show is when he uses the comet to begin razing the earth kingdom, imo. then his reaction to seeing the avatar, the only person in the world who could possibly challenge him and someone his family for generations had been searching for, is priceless. his challenging of aang before the fight was great, as was his hyper aggressive fighting styling which he paired with constant verbal attacks. it was a really great performance and direction for the final villain of the show.

Something I've noticed is how well ozai is written for the purpose of the world building. The fire nation is based upon imperial Japan, and in that culture the emperor was often seen as a god among men. Ozai is that very concept. Aang's dilemma in The Old Masters makes perfect sense. Yeah, the Fire Nation genocided his people, and yes, Gyatso killed a bunch of Fire Nation soldiers in self-defense, but Aang is the *last* airbender. He doesn't have the luxury of killing the Firelord if he also wants his culture to endure. The airbenders being ambushed did. If they had won, any airbenders who didn't have to resort to taking lives would be able to carry on the tradition unencumbered with having violated a core principle. If Aang kills the Firelord, as far as he knows, and from his position, the genocide of his culture would be complete, and it would die with him still alive. That's a horrible fate to endure. And that's a real thing to struggle with balancing. It's also possible that him being 12, even as a master of the technique of airbending, he may not yet have learned the nuance of the pacifism in Air Nomad culture. His view of it might be understandably juvenile. But that's the only view he's got, and he's got no airbender to talk to about it to change that outlook.

Disappointed to see The Drill so low. I absolutely loved the video and the effort it took to put this together, and since it's television it's ok that people have other opinions and such. But I thought I'd share an opinion of my own. The Drill has so much to offer, some of the best combat in the entire series, a pivotal plot point where the Fire Nation try to literally end the entire war right here in this episode. Azula v Aang which is a pretty rare duel, and the climax is one of the best out of any episode in my opinion. Not to mention it comes back later when the Earth King sees the drill and learns that the war is real. It just fits everything together so well, and AANG RUNS UP AND DOWN A DAMN WALL. I think realistically it's a top 15 episode on merit, but I have personal bias because it was my favorite as a kid so it's top 5 for me.

And I think that the writers weren't trying to make it make sense, because of how often psychics are outed as fake. It shows what goes down in a common fire nation city. I loved that Aang just randomly showed up at a fire nation school for two days and threw a banger party. Oh, and Aang and Katara’s dance scene. Amazing. Also, The Puppet Master is definitely in my top three. It shows how powerful bending can be, with a focus on Katara (who i love). I really like the Guru it’s one of my favorites. It made me reflect on my life and what I’m holding inside. And I think the scene with the guru talking about Aang going through a lot of grief in his life but love has moved in is one the most emotional parts of the show. Makes me cry everytime I watch it

Really epic video, dude. I like how you really tried to mesh your personal tastes with objective aspects of the show, and I think you did a fair job ranking them all. I'd disagree with some placements, but hey, tons of people disagree with me. I'm glad you had the courage and love for this show to speak your mind honestly. And thank you for giving The Firebending Masters the credit it deserves, I don't think it's talked about enough. Again, great job, I'll watch more videos from you for sure!

I think the point of the painted lady episode was to show that the war has taken as much of a toll on the fire nation as it has on the others. Which is a very important thing that they needed to get across. I also think it furthers katara’s ark, and helps solidify katara and sokka’s sibling relationship. Definitely would be higher on my list. Not my favorite, but definitely doesn’t deserve to be in the bottom 10. Also, half of the bad episodes you say are bad because they’re irrelevant and only contain character development. Character development isn’t relevant to you?

I know its not a popular opinion but I really like the painted lady and avatar day. Avatar day feels very coen brothers to me with how unreasonable, cowardly and stupid the villagers are. The Painted Lady was the first episode I remember watching as a kid so I have a soft spot for it. And I also like how the moral is that the villagers have to be self reliant. I feel that people oftem forget that Katara did learn that she couldnt be there for everyone. I dont know my reasons arent great its mostly nostalgia and gut feeling but I do feel both episodes are well written

The fortuneteller episode is so out of place. That episode is so important because it give roku a redemption arc through aang. Roku couldn’t save his home village from the volcano when it erupted and when he needed he’s friend the most he turned on him. Aang completely redeems that arc by saving the village with the help of his friends. It’s also one of the first displays of aangs true ability as a master air bender, people like to overshadow the fact that he was the youngest master airbender to exist, even before he knew he was the avatar. This episode is the first display you get of his true power. It’s a beautiful episode

I agree about the Sokka thing. He's one of my favorite characters in the whole show but when I saw them saying that he invented the submarines I was so confused "When would have time to make them?" But then it turned out the inventor just saw sokka's drawing and he actually made them.

14:55 I'd say yes, at least in part. There have been a few situations in my life where making hard decisions has definitely caused me to have a physical reactions. I had stomach aches, headaches and smaller nervous breakdowns for days after quitting my first university or contemplating whether to break up with my girlfriend or not. And if you get a small infection during that time, I'm sure the stress can amplify that into fever dreams and all the stuff we see Zuko go through.

The desert at 55??????? I realise it's about opinions, but I'm sorry what? It's my 3rd favourite episode, and I know I'm not the only one. I can understand why everyone doesn't have it that high, but at least in the top 40. Edit: Ok, the southern raiders at 40. After watching the full video, I can definitely conclude that we have very, very different opinions. We barely fully agree on a single episode, although respect for the Runaway being at 20, it's at 22 for me. One of the most underrated episodes. I feel like you tried to put the 2 parters (and 4) too close together. They don't have to be so close. You could just think they're so close, but I highly doubt it. Winter solstice part 2, is so much better than part 1. The same with the sozin's comet episodes, you even said it yourself. Part 1, my least favourite, is 49 episodes below the 3rd part, my favourite. I doubt you actually think that episode is better than a lot of the episodes below it, but you simply group it with the other episodes. The 2nd part is also way lower for me. I'm not you though obviously, so I might just be wrng, but that is just what I feel like is going on here. Despite how much I disagree with this list, good video, it was very well made, and although I don't agree with most of your reasonings, you still gave understandable arguments. I can't be bothered to spent too much time, writing my arguments for episodes being where they are, but I guess I'll just share my list, which probably has quite a few extremely unpopular opinions, but it's an opinion. If anyone wants me to explain why an episode is where it is, just ask, I'll probably answer. I've also worked on and changed this list over like 15 months, so it's a very well thought out list. Something might very well change soon, idk. 61. The great divide (Season 1 episode 11) 60. Winter solstice part 1, the spirit world (S1 ep7) 59. Nightmares and daydreams (S3 ep9) 58. The swamp (S2 ep4) 57. The fortuneteller (S1 ep14) 56. Avatar day (S2 ep5) 55. The boy in the iceberg (S1 ep1) 54. Imprisoned (S1 ep6) 53. The waterbending scroll (S1 ep9) 52. The warriors of kyoshi (S1 ep4) 46. Return to omashu (S2 ep3) 45. The northern air temple (S1 ep17) 44. Jet (S1 ep10) 43. Bato of the water tribe (S1 ep15) 42. The boiling rock part 1 (S3 ep14) 41. The western air temple (S3 ep12) 40. The cave of two lovers (S2 ep2) 39. The day of black sun part 1, the invasion (S3 ep10) 38. Sozin's comet part 2, the old masters (S3 ep19) 37. The library (S2 ep10) 24. Appa's lost days (S2 ep16) 23. The serpents pass (S2 ep 12) 22. The runaway (S3 ep7) 21. The blue spirit (S1 ep13) 20. The tales of ba sing se (S2 ep15) 19. The siege of the north part 1 (S1 ep19) 18. The chase (S2 ep8) 17. The city of walls and secrets (S2 ep14) 16. The day of black sun part 2, the eclipse (S3 ep11) 15. Preach. You just commented what I was thinking. I have a minor disagreement with your list. I would put Winter Solstice Part I higher. The whole part with Iroh getting captured by the earth-benders added a ton of lore early on, such as Iroh's "legendary failure" at Ba Sing Se, him having journeyed, in the spirit world, etc., as well his attempted escape by burning the earthbender's hands, and Zuko choosing to fight along with him instead of chase the Avatar FIVE episodes before the storm. I personally put it about 10 spots higher. The Aang part was dang weak though.
@luitjenapol2815
@luitjenapol2815 2 года назад
@@countyfacts6920 I completely agree with you on the Zuko and Iroh part of the story, that was great. But the Aang part was maybe even weaker than the great divide for me, and it took up most of the episode. It was also called the spirit world, when it did a very bad job at introducing the spirit world, and I also felt like the animation was worse in this episode. If we compare it to the episode right above it, Nightmares and Daydreams, it's actually pretty similar. The Aang part of the story isn't very good, while the Zuko part is almost equally good to, if not better than it is in Winter Solstice part 1. The huge difference is that the Aang side of the story, although not great, it's hilarious. It also has an amazing dream sequence, compared to Winter Solstice part 1 episode, where there's nothing that stands out to me on the Aang side of the story, and it also lacks the comedic element of Nightmares and Daydreams.

The Desert is absolutely deserving of a top 5 spot. Funny Sokka and Momo moments, emotional and rarely angry Aang moments, arguably Katara’s strongest character moments in the whole series. Great Zuko and Iroh storyline that introduced the Order of the White Lotus for the first time. Plus one of the most emotional ending scenes to an episode. It might honestly be the best episode of the entire series

see now the problem is with a show as beloved as avatar no one tier list will be the same, like i feel like im kinda impassive towards the middle ranked episodes like from 10-50 or maybe less than that like 20-40 yh thats more like it, those r kinda just like average avater episodes, just great. But in terms of top 10 avatar and the firelord is not that gd its interesting and stuff and a well done flashback but i dont think anything extraordinary. the guru is not that gd i feel like its too quick for what happens, toph gets metal bending aang unlocks avatar state they plan the invasion and get captured sokka reunites with his dad thats a bit too much which dragged it down slightly for me ngl i think zuko alone is overrated its very very good yh but still i think 10 max crossroads probs aint the best for me idk what would be their is too much competition now with a couple of your middle ones and lower ones pls tell me winter part 1 was a typo its very gd the puppet master and sokkas master are top 10 ah thats all i can be bothered for
@luitjenapol2815
@luitjenapol2815 2 года назад
@@Movies-ji9gw With the ones that you think I have too high, there's not much to be said, we just disagree. With the ones you think are too low, I can explain. I already answered Winter Solstice part 1 if you look at the replies. Sokka's master, I don't really know what to say, I don't think it's near the top 10, and Sokka is my favourite character. Don't get me wrong, it's still an amazing episodes. Like 40 of the episodes are still at least 9/10's for me. The Puppetmaster is a really unpopular opinion on my side. I think no matter what, this episode is definitely not in the top 10. The problem with it for me, is that one twist can't carry it that much. It's the same with the Blue Spirit for me, just the fact that it was Zuko can't make it a top 10 episode for me, when the rest of the episode definitely wasn't top 10 material. The Puppetmaster is just a better and darker early season 1 episode without the bloodbending twist, if you get what I mean. Then it's around the level of the Warriors of Kyoshi for me. Then add the great things about it, it being scary, dark, bloodbending and most importantly for me Hama being an amazing villain, and it's dragged a lot higher, but not higher than I put it. This is showed by the fact that after already having seen the episode, it's not nearly as good. If I look at my list, I can comfortably say that I like every single episode above it more, and that it's better than every episode below it.

I gotta say this is a really great ranking, although I might disagree with very few parts, but anyway, you really did a very damn good video. Also, this made me appreciate again the animation and artistic value of this show, which is outstanding for one that was made for TV in the 2000s, so props to the people at JM Animation for that, because they absolutely killed it.
