I picked the first ever Lamb Hass from my 4-year old tree about 2 weeks ago. It had already changed to black 6 weeks prior to harvest. When I picked it, it was still very hard. Took about another 2 weeks to ripen sitting on a table. Just posting this so other newbie Lamb growers who are wondering about what stage to pick their Lamb avos. (Lamb are confusing because they turn black while still on the tree, whereas Hass won't turn black until after harvest) (The other two fruit on the tree are still very hard. I just picked another one). btw We ate the ripe one yesterday. Our verdict - delicious, very smooth and creamy. (Possibly better than Hass.) Cheers, Dave (in Sydney)

@@RealLifeFruitopia Sorry to hear your Lamb Hass got flooded (I just watched some of your other videos about your Lamb). Would it help to mound the soil up about 0.5m or more prior to planting your avos to increase drainage? Because we have a mostly clay soil we made a sandy loam mound about 0.3m high and planted it on top. (if I had a bigger pile of sand to use I would have gone higher). So far it has survived some extreme rain events (our Sydney suburb received 718mm of rain in March this year), but presumably when the tree grows bigger the roots eventually will get down into the clay, and so phytophthora could still kill it(?)

Nice video. Thank you. Nice to see what goes on outside of Southern California.. Also nice to see that Lamb/Hass is your favorite... But of course seasonality plays a ole in making a call on top variety. Here in So Cal Lamb is mature six months later than Hass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So it compliments the Hass perfectly! I also like Pinkerton when they are big and mature like your example, and Fuerte for a few months long before the Lamb is mature.... Cheers, gray

I had a brogon that was big and beautiful and produced two dozen little avocados. within a month all the avocados had dropped and every leaf fell off. I tried to nurse the tree back to health, and it eventually tried to put out some new leaves, but eventually all the branches died and the leaves fell of again. My son girdled the lower trunk with a trimmer half the way around. I am pretty sure that caused the demise!

If branches start to die from the top, it is possibly root rot (when the tap root finally reaches water-logged, clay soil). Planting it on a mound helps -- check the video by Self Sufficient Me about this.

Do you up-pot the avocados/tropicals when you first get an advanced tree from the nursery for the 2-3 year period before planting in ground? Do they need more water and fertiliser in pots?
@RealLifeFruitopia
@RealLifeFruitopia 4 года назад
I always up pot when I bring a new tree home. I protect it from direct sun and wind blasts in a micro climate on the side of the home, where it lives for 2-3 years. I pamper it regularly with visual inspections for bugs/damage and soil checks for its water/feeding needs. When I sense its acclimated or reached fruiting stage, it goes in the ground when an opening arises (replacing a diseased/dead tree). This year I decided to go in another direction planting 3 young mango in ground with morning light and afternoon sun protection. Fruiting mango and jackfruit are my next challenge. Stay tuned for updates.

Hi, just bought a grafted pinkerton avocado tree. My estimate is the tree is just less than a year. But.... it is flowering now. My question is, shall I leave it like that because I saw some video in youtube suggesting to remove those flowers since the tree is too small to handle fruit assuming it will be capable of doing it. The tree by the way is like 1.2 meter tall. What are your thoughts on these mate? thank you so much in advance if you happen to see this and reply. cheers

Hi - excellent video. Question - I planted a small grafted Lamb Hass (from Bunnings in Sydney) 4 years ago. This year I let it produce its first crop - three nice looking fruits. But I don't know when I should pick them. The fruit have changed colour from green to almost black about 6 weeks ago, but they're still quite hard. So do I leave them on the tree till they soften? or should I pick them now and keep indoors to soften? The tree looks healthy, and is a bit over 2m high, semi-shade. Thanks - from Dave
@RealLifeFruitopia
@RealLifeFruitopia Год назад
After turning black, you can tell when ready to remove by bending the fruit upwards, if it gives way, then it'll come off the stem. Place on counter until soft, cut and eat.
@davewastech

@@RealLifeFruitopia Thanks - Looks like mine aren't ready just yet, although they are black. I've just been browsing the net and in Southern California they're ready to pick over the summer months, so I guess it would be kinda similar here in Sydney's climate.

Is your Wurtz avocado tree dwarf?
@RealLifeFruitopia
@RealLifeFruitopia 3 года назад
It's classified as dwarf compared to normal avocado trees. Mine reaches 4 meters when left unpruned.

@@RealLifeFruitopia did you think of any reason why your Wurtz took long long to produce fruits? I was planning to get Wurtz and lamb Hass grafted on one tree from summertime nursery. Now after watching your video I decided to change my mind getting a Wurtz haha

@@msmonicalay Wurtz is a good choice for limited spaces or for anyone who has to have all varieties. Lamb Hass is number one or Hass if you have the room.

I don't know why my Wurtz took so long to produce, maybe it was me not knowing what I was doing in 2004.
