While technically not a cancelled game I feel like Sonic Synergy could be on this list. While it became Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, it was vastly different from what Synergy would have actually been like.
I'm surprised you didn't cover Sonic Unleashed's planned PC port. The main reason we know it was potentially coming is due to files within Generations.
The files in Generations were development software used to debug Unleashed in general that were carried over and used for Generations; this doesn't mean a PC port was planned, just that a PC was used to develop the games.
Nope, this wasn't a thing. Those install image files, pngs of Werehog and Amy and stuff, were going to be used when installing the game on PS3, a feature not a lot of PS3 games used, but it had the same effect as installing a 360 game- less disc drive noise and slightly faster loading times. But this option was dropped [probably because PS3 was awful to code for]
but didn't Sonic Colours came out *before* Sonic Generations? Planet Wisp is literally one of the stages in Sonic Generations, so either Sonic Team have been planing Sonic Generations before the development of Sonic Colours, or it's just a big fat lie.
@@CrappyProductionsOfficialGenerations was in development since 2009 before Colors came out so yes it was before Colors, in fact some assets from Colors were leftovers from the Wii version of Generations since they couldn't get that game to run on the system
@@neomachine855before Sonic Colours came out or before it is in development? Because if it's only just before Sonic Colours releases it's quite unlikely that Sega would just change the engine mid development, but if it's before Sonic Colours even started being developed, then yea there might be a slight chance that Sonic Colours is actually using the cancelled Sonic Generations Wii engine. (Edit: I just checked, Sonic Colours started its development in 2008, so it's unlikely that Sonic Colours is actually using the Generations Wii engine, it's more possible that it's the other way around) As for the "leftover" assets, it is possible that since Sonic Colours and Sonic Generations are being worked on at the same time, they share some assets from Gens to Colours as a base and then modified it and just forgot to remove the Gens assets.
@@CrappyProductionsOfficial I'm pretty sure generations started first in development at Sonic Team before Colors became a thing, they knew that they couldn't get the Wii version working due to hardware limitations so that's why Colors was made in the first place so Wii owners could have a Sonic game while not being left out
@@neomachine855i mean, wii owners aren't being left out by sonic even if colours isn't on it, they still have the storybooks series, but that's besides the point
Lessons learned from this video: If your sonic game has any variation of the word Extreme in it, it’s probably not making it. And if your sonic game literally as the acronym for Sexually Transmitted Infection(s), your game is probably not making it… for good reason
To be more precise about the Archie Comics, the Ken Penders lawsuit wasn't actually what made Sega finish their partnership with Archie. I mean, I'm sure it played a role, but the true consequences of it was a soft reboot of the comics which still continued from October 2013 to February 2017, so it was definitly not cancelled at the time. Apparently, they cancelled it because they wanted to take the comics to a new direction and make it fit more with the games timeline. The poor sales, the reprints and the lawsuits would've also pushed Sega into cancel it, but the Ken Penders lawsuit was certainly not the only thing that made Sega cancel the comic! ^^
Sonic Runners as a whole was just so interesting. A bit of a shame I never got the chance to play it during its soft-launch or when it came out, but Sonic Runners Revival fills that gap nicely. That being said, I have two other things to say. First, a correction for how leveling up any characters you owned. Leveling up characters involved collecting Rings during your run, once your run was over, any Rings that you had banked via the checkpoints that would randomly show up would not only be added to your overall total of rings, but turned into experience for any characters you had chosen for the run too. The Crystals were just for points, nothing more, nothing less. Second, if you want a more detailed history of Sonic Runners, a RU-vidr named PatMac made a video detailing almost the everything about Sonic Runners.
This video was so good that i didn't even notice the full hour pass by. I am actually impressed by the amount of media that i had no idea existed, nice video
@@miwiki6 Wow you watched both of those long vids?? omg thank you so much!!! I'm glad you enjoyed them!! I've got a directors cut version of the canceled sonic project's on the way that's gonna add a whooole bunch of new stuff so I hope you enjoy that to when it comes out!
God the presentation of this video is so good. Perfect pacing, wasting no time, very informational, no back tracking or random tangents, just a good hour of cancelled Sonic media. It's perfect Also the custom logos were absolutely amazing, huge props to the artist
Thank you so so much! Im so glad you enjoyed the video! I spent a lot of time creating this project and i thought it came out great! Also speaking on the custome logos! I actually made a good handful of them myself! Graphic desighn is kinda one of my passions! ( i even went as far as to recreate beta logos and made them look cleaner, Sonic Saturn and Sonic DS are great examples of this ) There are also an equal amount i didnt make and or i modified them to look just a bit better but i made sure to credit all of the amazing artists in the description!
Okay for anyone seeing this im going to create a DX edition of this video that adds games i missed and fixes mistakes so that will be out in the coming weeks. With that said, here are the biggest mistakes! [ Yes i said ISO instead of IOS [ I said sega pedeY instead of segapede [ I spelled cancelled as canceld [ I miss pronounced Nihon falcom [ Sister sonic portion is partially incorrect ( i said westernization ) [ I pronounced DIC entertainment as dicK entertainment instead of deek entertainment [ I called Pac-Man Mania, Pac-Man Mania 3D All of these issues will be fixed in the DX edition of this video, and I apologize for the mistakes made here and I'll try to do better quality control in the future! On a final note the DX Edition will also fix editing mistakes that have been found in this video
It happens, I was just very confused by what the hell ISO was supposed to mean in this context haha. Glad you acknowledged it We all say DICK entertainment intentionally tho
SegaSonic "Bros" should be "Brothers" due to the period at the end, like "Mister" being shortened to "Mr." Like, what even is a "mrrrr"? A miserable pile of secrets is what. lol
Huh, funny that the idea for Sonic 4 Ep 3 sounds a awfuly similar to Superstars minus the blue spheres special stages from Sonic 3, the fact that it could had have multiplayer and 4 playable characters including amy makes me think that they reused the idea for Superstars adding Trip and the whole sungazer dragon idea to make it less similar to Sonic 4. It makes more sense when you think that Jun Senoue used the same style of music that Sonic 4 had and it makes me think that the songs he did was meant to be for Ep 3 and he just reused them for Superstars, its not the first time he does that though he literally reused music from Sonic 3D Blast into Sonic Adventure.
You forgot to mention the canceled _Sonic_ cartoon spin-off _Super Sonic Sisters_ . The YT member known as Good Ol' Groovy Jake did a video on it a while back. Great video, though!
Ken Penders did not win any of his lawsuits, no matter what he tells you. That he seemed to have enough grounds to make a case because of the nature of Archie's work-for-hire contacts (apparently, according to the somewhat suspect paperwork that the involved parties were/were not able to produce) was more than reason enough for Sega to terminate their relationship, and be far more cautious going forward.
This is the first video I think I've watched from you, and my god, how has this only got a few hundred views? The quality AND quantity of this video is something else entirely! Keep it up!
dang, i didnt finished to write down the whole comment lol i really appreciate the effort, THE MASSIVE EFFORT to comp all of scrapped sonic's stuff, I really enjoyed that hour!! keep the good job m8
Sega Sonic wasn't just going to get ported to the 32X. It was also going to get re-released in the Sonic collection called Sonic Mega Collection(released for the GameCube in 2002). Sega Sonic was planned for the collection, but it got removed because of issues with the emulator because they couldn't make a good way to replace the track ball mechanic. And just like how Sega Sonic was released in 1993 in Japan,it was also released around the world(like in the USA)but it was still all in japanese. People who searched the games files found unused english text(to replace the japanese text when Robotnik was speaking)and even sprites which were based off the SatAM design for Robotnik. There were also found 2 different sprites for Robotnik's name. The first one is "Eggman-Evil Scientist" and the Second "Robotnik-Evil Scientist". The explanation for why there is english text calling him Eggman and Robotnik,is because Sega of Japan didn't know what name they should use(for the english arcade release)
I feel like Sonic 06 is kinda like it’s own cancelled game because it was suppose to be way bigger, but the sonic team was cut in half to work on sonic and the secret rings for wii, and they were trying to rush out the game for ps3 and Xbox, it’s kinda ironic how it was suppose to be the most grand game in the franchise and is the most hated. If events happened differently we might of had a completely different feeling game. Also, nice vid, have no idea how you knew of all these games lol, so very entertaining learning the history.
The story I've always heard about Sonic Saturn was that Yuji Naka didn't like the Sonic Saturn demo because it was using the Nights engine without his permission to do so
The most interesting thing about Penders v. Archie was how Archie lost. Archie had somehow lost their copy of his 1993 contract in 1996. When he found out about this in late 2008, he started copyrighting all the characters and concepts he made during his tenure, about 250-ish characters. In the world of comics, most contract are work-for-hire where any ideas and characters you make become the property of the company or rights holder, in this case Sega. Without that contract, Sega and Archie have no claim to those characters. In the story, this led to the Super Genesis Wave which was used to reboot Archie's run until 2017. It removed ALL Archie-exclusive characters save for the core Freedom Fighters (Sally, Antoine, Rotor, Bunnie, Nicole, and Uncle Chuck). Not even non-Penders characters were safe for fear of future lawsuits and Sega's tighter grip. Worst part is that they were in the middle of a great storyline where Eggman had roboticized Sally, upgraded her for combat, and used her knowledge to strike devastating blows against all in his way. She likely would have killed her former compatriots had the Super Genesis Wave not happened.
"Sonic STI" Can see why they cancelled that one lol Jokes aside, it looked amazing!! I love isometric pixel art. Such a shame they never got it off the ground.
When I was younger I have a very vivid memory of me watching one of those Sonic X vol.1 thingies ish. It was a pretty long time ago but I just remembered the first sonic x episode on the Gameboy Advance.
The information provided about Sonic 4 episode 3 here is all I need to conclude my theory about Sonic Superstars actually being the lost episode 3 is probably accurate.
A lot of these canceled concepts are used in Sonic Superstars. Particular Sonic Runners as I see the "gold" enemies on the stages just like in Superstars.
This was all so so perfect! Thank you!! Except the Sonic DS commentary, that’s literally a proto boost formula style that has plagued the franchise for over a decade now :( But again otherwise perfect thank you!
Uh Sonic 4 was a failure because it was entirely recycled levels from sonic 1&2 in yucky 3D models and a third episode would have absolutely been yet another trainwreck.
Damn, that's so ironic that SEGA decided to reject an actually good and creative idea of a mobile Sonic game like "Sonic Day", but instead still uses "Sonic Dash" and "Sonic Forces: Speed Battle", which are the worst and least creative mobile games possible
there was also another planned classic era tv series that never got put into development, very little is known about it but there is a video talking about the cancelled pitch and it's very interesting, and not only does it barely include sonic, instead his twin cousins, but it also takes place in space
"Super Sonic Sisters"; I've seen the RU-vid video. Also, the idea might have come from the canceled attempt (by SEGA) to localize "Popful Mail" for the Mega CD as "Sister Sonic" (again, *a* cousin).
Didnt even know that was a thing till you mentioned it, all while i was doing my reaserch i never saw that mentioned until i specifically searched for it Imma add it to the Master list and probably make a part 2 if any more canceld projects i missed come along!
@@Jetter06TCRF has a decent amount of info for stuff like Xtreme and other cancelled sonic projects. Like how Sonic Pool (Bonus stages of Sonic Saturn) was actually first moved to an iteration of Sonic Xtreme shortly before it was cancelled and then moved 3D Blast Saturn where it got the can.
Man I didn't know there were so many!! I've watched Sonic RU-vidrs in the toilet for YEARS now, and I haven't heard of most of those. Sonic Mars got my attention the most, looks like it had potential. I can see it moving fast like a 2D Sonic game.
You havent seen anything yet! I made a directors cut of this video that adds a B U N C H of additional games, books, mangas and more that I missed in this video!! It also fixes mistakes and adds new info to some of the orginal entrys AND its 2 hours long! If your feeling brave and wanna waste 2 hours the DX video has got you covered lmao ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FBhFSXx1MPE.htmlsi=xKgMpjPFHJXxSclg
Popful Mail/Sister Sonic really saddens me, Sonic barely gets any RPGs or Action RPGs (aside from Chronicles), I would’ve loved that Sonic take on a different genre game just like how Puyo Puyo was Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine. Sonic Xtreme had character named Tiara Boobowski which has an amazing design I wish could’ve been repurposed for another Sonic Game.
Same here, i wish we could have gotten a look at sister sonic just so we have an idea of what it could have been like! ( aside from the tiny concept i made i mean, like somthing thats actually offical )
nearly every item goes "SEGA got bored of it, but luckily fans put in loads of unpaid work to make something better than the official thing ever would have been"
I wanna correct you on the Sister Sonic part, Sister Sonic wasn't a western adaptation of Popful Mail, it was going to be the Sega CD version we actually recieved. Good video anyways.
I dont really get why Sonic Crackers is in this video. It got turned into Knuckles Chaotix, and wasnt even supposed to be released to the public even when they started making it
i am still mad about the ova. unironically wanna lead my own sea3on team in the future. even if it's for a single episode and maybe some concepts/comics. we could explore so much in this universe, the worldbuilding - like, why is planet freedom structured like it is? was it always like this? who is knuckles in this? why is sara a hybrid? we could reintroduce so many different sonic characters, or even make brand new ones. ugh. them japanese appreciators don't get the love satam fans do. i AM jealous.
I've always wanted to see a full 3d sequel to sonic Battle preferably made by cyberconnect2 and bandai namco following the same structure that made up the naruto UNS series
Do you have a source suggesting the Japanese producers intended to make more installments? You know an OVA stands for Original Video Animation right? They are usually stand alone animations, or hyper short collections, such as the original six episodes of FLCL. But it is for sure my favorite animation of sonic, so if we could’ve ever gotten more I sure would like to know!
Look! My fangame was shown here, cool, but, just to know, the footage shown here is pretty outdated now, the game now it's much more similar with the original and much more closer to what the 32X could handle
@@Jetter06 not in current State, but I posted on my channel a test level video, but there Sonic Still used a 3D model, but Still, is much closer to How the game looks now (yeah, now Sonic uses sprites like X-Treme, but they are pre rendered sprites from the official CG model for the game)
1:03 - If you want a rom image of a final version of Sonic 3 +, download "Sonic 3 Complete". EDIT - In a similar fashion, hackers have also fixed the port of "Doom" on the 32X, and are still upgrading it. it's called "Doom Resurrection", and is worth downloading for your emulator.
I know some cancelled Sonic games like ke Sonic Extreme and Sonic 3+ but wow I didn't even know there were so many. Not to mention that Sonic movie beased off of Sonic Saturn.
This was a solid video, but I gotta ask: Are you actually Richard Steven Horvitz? And if not, are you going to replace him for all of his voice roles when he retires?
Im glad you enjoyed the video! xD also i can assure you im not richard lmao but i am very much honored to be compared to him! And as far as replacing him lol i guess well see but i doubt it xD
I wonder what would happen if all these dead projects suddenly got uncanceled and were actually set to be released possibly next year and moving onwards with the sonic ip what's the first thing y'all would do?
Sonic 3 & Knuckles was split into 2 games for time consraits, sega genesis size limitations being up to 12MB, & deadlines for mcdonald"s toy promotions
A very good video man! But you forgot to talk about Archie Sonic Online, it's almost the same as Sonic The Comic Online, only that no official writers or artists came back
Actually i did refrence ASO in the sonic underground segment! I didnt refrence it during the archi portion because from my understanding it doesnt continue the story where it was left off in the comics but rather tells stories as if the genisis wave never happend
@@Jetter06 ooh my bad, makes sense actually! But at least mention it on the Archie segment and you make it clear that it follows the events if the genesis wave didn't happen
The Sonic Xtreme fisheyed lens is very nauseating to look at. Then again, any game with forced wider FOV or that damn fisheye-lens effect makes me feel ill if I watch footage of it.
Still annoyed that they cancelled the Xtreme movie. I wish they made that and just rebranded it and made it not Xtreme. (It was a movie were sonic and eggman get in the real world and this kid helps sonic.)
I'm pretty sure people can emulate SegaSonic the Hedgehog on the Steam Deck with the trackpads emulating the trackball I'm typing this from memory I think Chaomix brought this up in a video about emulating Sonic games on the Steam Deck
