After multiple concept car teases and a lot of hype, the Honda CR-Z was ultimately in the eyes of many a letdown, mainly cited as such because of its lack of power and verve, despite the appealing packaging of a small good looking hatchback with a hybrid system and manual transmission. But if we strip away all the expectation and inevitable comparison to the CR-X, we find quite a worthy successor to a car it much more closely resembles, that being the original Honda Insight.

Checking out a used 2012 in a few days and I couldn't be more stoked to do so after this!

Cool! Yea as I talked about ad-nauseam I think they were derided but for very unfair reasons, and I just love how unique they are for a modern car. Have you decided on manual or automatic? I still would love to drive a manual to see how much of a difference it makes in the driving experience. good luck!

I bought one of these less than a month ago (Sport trim with the manual 6 speed gearbox) which has a full service history with less than 60,000 miles. I've driven it for about 900 miles so far on a variety of roads here in the UK and have so far got an average of 49mpg (British gallons, not American gallons). A british gallon is roughly 4.55 liters, whereas an american gallon is just about 3.8 liters, so nearly 41 American mpg . For my purposes, it's a brilliant little car with low road tax, low insurance costs and comes with good reliability. My primary worry was about the longevity of the hybrid battery, but it seems they last well beyond 150,000 miles, if looked after correctly. The manual is the one to drive, especially in sport mode.

Janky do thanky for the comment, glad to hear its worked out well so far. Its funny I watch a few british car youtubers and was always shocked they were getting such good mileage in their ferrari's and trucks and stuff, until I looked up the british mpg figures, and saw that it wasnt a one to one ratio. Thanks for doing the conversion for me :) - Hard to argue with that mileage in an affordable and unique little car, and low insurance and taxes just adds to the complete package. I have a 2015 Prius V and had similar concerns about buying a higher mileage used hybrid car, but as of now I'm at 160,000 and seems like the battery is still charging great and am averaging about 40mpg (in a 4 door station wagon no less) - I bought mine as a one-owner and it was very well maintained by them, which seems to make all the difference, as long as they are maintained properly they can actually exceed the factory specs on battery life, etc. Happy motoring!

@@JankyAF I have the 2010 model with the NiMH batteries rather than the Lithium ion ones on later models, which apparently is not a bad thing. The Nickel metal hydride batteries can be reconditioned rather than needing to replace them. Good news as far as I am concerned.

@@JankyAF Honda got it right with the Insight, which uses an older version of the same technology in my car. Here is a link to an Insight with 320,000 miles being restored back to full battery health (it has had one battery pack change during that time) - yes, it does take a few days, but the results are worth it. The same thing can be done on my CRZ. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ImfZDr4ARRk.html

@@nekite1 I adore the 1st gen insight, I've always wanted one, still unbeaten in mpg's (for non plug-ins anyway) and the manual option makes it so cool. And I've watched a bit on these, there are definitely a lot of guru's around here who fix them and it seems like super high mileage is nothing to be worried about. Hope to own one one day as a commuter car

Have you used the "L" setting for a standing start? Hold both paddle shifters for 2 seconds and it should go into L mode.

I almost bought a Fiat X-19 back in the 80s- for 900 bucks! It was like driving a go-kart. BTW- the CR-Z with the 6-speed manual transmission provides very good performance. Not so much with the automatic CVT.

Well clearly, in my very unbiased opinion of course, you have very good taste. Love my X and can’t wait to finally drive it more than 1 mile this summer. Yea I’m sure the manual is probably a much more engaging experience, and may even yield better mileage depending on how one drives. The cvt could be very awkward in spots of acceleration, which I hope I captured in the video. My case for “classic automatics” is simply that despite being the “less desireable” version they can still be great cars, and its perfect for this owner who spends a lot of time commuting and compared to something like a civic he gets better mileage and arguably has a more fun, interesting way to do it. Janky do thanky, hope another X comes your way one day…

The second gen 2013 to 2015, 6 speed manual is amazing! I would not consider the CVT option.

Janky do Thanky! Yes of course I would choose the manual as well, but as a commuter car where you are on highways or in bumper to bumper traffic often, I think having a CVT CR-Z is still cooler than most cars on the road.

Guilty as charged! I was so excited to review one of these it was years in the making, my reviews are like what Barry White said about his songs being so long, if you are enjoying it I want to give you a lot of it. I love that dark purple color, with a manual transmission that is like a perfect spec, congrats, enjoy your 40 mpg (depending on how you drive it with the manual) and janky do thanky for the comment.

@@JankyAF quick question… my CR-Z did not come with a spare, and I need to get one. What do you recommend? I’ve heard a Civic spare would fit but I have my doubts. Your thoughts, o wise one? What size should I get? Thanks in advance. Out of curiosity, were both engine and tranny built and assembled in Japan for my 2016?

@@wholeetoe I am a huge proponent of steel wheels, although with alloys on the rest of the vehicle you may have a slight weight imbalance, but if it was for emergencies only this should not matter a great deal, as long as you got it changed relatively quickly. The steel wheel should be the cheapest option, but I would also suggest searching junkyards, you may be able to purchase a single CR-Z oem wheel. I often use this site: www.car-part.com/ - you can search for an exact part or "interchange" parts, for example if a civic has the same wheel size it should come up in the search, and best of all you can sort by distance from your area code, so you can start with the closest shop/yard and work your way out, depending on availability and price. A quick search shows the CR-Z to ride on a 16x6 inch wheel, which I have to imagine is fairly common. Tire size is P195/55R16 - I know a lot of hybrids often ride on harder or smaller tires to help with fuel economy, so this is something you could look into generally next time you have to buy tires, depending on your performance/efficiency desires. In theory any 16" tire should fit on the wheel but again you should probably get the same tire size as the rest of them on there for balance. Then again if you want to do it real Janky, you can buy a "donut" wheel and tire, the little dinky ones many cars supply as their spares, which are speed and mileage restricted, but may be a cheap and more easily stow able solution. janky do thanky, good luck! Oh, to your last question, the CR-Z was a much bigger deal in Japan than it was in the States, so I have to imagine the trans and engine were Japanese designed and built, but don't quote me on that. Forums are always your friend, I'd try to find a CR-Z specific forum, which there probably are being such an enthusiast/oddball model, and there is usually someone on those who knows every single detail about everything.

I really love your review, it summarizes exactly what this car is all about. I own a manual version, which makes it even more fun with its short gearing and short throws. Makes the car an absolute hoot, even though you're going slow AF. It is a perfect commuter as well thanks to the torqey IMA. And in addition dead reliable and very cheap to run. I love mine dearly and plan to keep it for as long as it runs.

Janky do Thanky! Ive gotten a lot of positive feedback from people who actually own CRZ's, and that warms my heart because it makes me feel like I nailed the essence of the car. I think if I had my druthers I'd definitely select the manual, but in either case you are getting the "driving a slow car fast" thing, but a lot of other cars that give this sensation are older, narrower, and with smaller tires, so I think there is a lot of be said of a modern car that can do that, and all in a unique package aesthetically. It really is an automotive oddball, but all the more reason to be cherished. Really appreciate the comment, janky do thanky and wishing you many more miles
